Can you recommend a Spanish city to explore ....

.... end Jan/early Feb. I'm thinking Malaga, not sure why. Been to Barcelona, DH hasn't though.

We usually spend a week or so in the sun in Tenerife but prices have got ridiculous. So thought we'd do a city break instead. I know it won't be very warm on the mainland.

Malaga is great, but it’s a beachy city and I wouldn’t choose to go there in winter.

I like Madrid for a winter city break. Amazing art galleries and lots of indoor things to do when it’s cold compared to other Spanish cities.

TheFlis · 30/10/2023 10:20

I would say Seville, it’s usually warmer than the rest of Europe (it was 40 degrees when we went in October!) and there is a lot to see close together.

LlynTegid · 30/10/2023 10:24

Bilbao is somewhere you could visit any time of year.

recklessgran · 30/10/2023 10:25

Another one for Seville. Fabulous!

mincepieandcustard · 30/10/2023 10:27

Madrid, Granada, Valencia, Malaga... all fantastic cities to explore. Granada is a short train ride from Malaga so a few days at each maybe?

Weesiewoo · 30/10/2023 10:28

Seville! It's a great time of year to go. Perfect exploring weather

Weesiewoo · 30/10/2023 10:29

Granada is great too.

Marmighty · 30/10/2023 10:29

Seville or Valencia

Marmighty · 30/10/2023 10:29

Oh yes Granada also great

Yoloohno · 30/10/2023 10:30

Have you considered a cruise for the week. P and o do cruises from Tenerife for a week including flights a lot cheaper than what we were looking at for a package holiday.

StripeyDeckchair · 30/10/2023 10:32

Seville
Lovely city, walk everywhere
You can get the train to Cordoba, which is heaving with visitors in the summer but lovely off peak.

SharonEllis · 30/10/2023 10:33

Granada is wonderful.

Nap1983 · 30/10/2023 10:34

I done Malaga in February last year. Loved it! Small so you can walk everywhere and loads to do. Museums, old town with nice restaurants and shops and the Marina has nice restaurants and bars. I also found it extremely reasonably priced in comparison to other city breaks I've been on.

Elodie09 · 30/10/2023 10:36

I've just been to Valencia, fabulous, you have old, modern and waterfront. Loved it.
Also really like Seville and went to Jerez in mid feb and it was reasonably warm and sunny. We loved the camera obscura in Jerez.
I haven't been to Barcelona or Madrid yet but some friends love Barcelona.

TiptopTommy · 30/10/2023 10:37

It would be a good time to go to Seville. I went in summer and it was too hot to walk around much then.

SM4713 · 30/10/2023 10:37

I have really enjoyed Malaga and Madrid in the off season. We've also done days trips from those places which were fantastic.

Train from Malaga to Ronda to see the amazing bridge
Train from Madrid to Toledo to see the amazing cathedral. Get some traditional marzipan if you go. It was delicious, and I normally hate marzipan.

SunlightOverBamburgh · 30/10/2023 10:39

The cathedral in Barcelona is said to be quite spectacular though I haven't been myself yet. Seville is another one I would recommend.

BigDahliaFan · 30/10/2023 10:39

I love Malaga, it's great in winter too, there's loads to see for a weekend. Granada is also rather fabulous in winter, the mountains look spectacular if there's snow.

I've been fairly often in January and the weather has almost always been lovely.

I also have a soft spot for Valencia, great food, stuff to see...

SunlightOverBamburgh · 30/10/2023 10:40

Or save the air fare and visit Spanish City in Whitley Bay, Northumberland!

viques · 30/10/2023 10:51

Granada is amazing, there is the Alhambra of course, which is stunning, but also a tradition of dance, the nuns who make biscuits, the house of Manuel de Falla, the gypsy quarter, and so much more.

As others have mentioned Seville is also a wonderful city to visit, so much to see and do.

if you only have a few days then Bilbao is perfect, small enough to walk around (and especially to promenade along the river in the evening) but with good public transport to places like Guernica, San Sebastián.

cyclamenqueen · 30/10/2023 10:53

definitely Granada, perfect for a short break and fabulous tapas too. alternatively Saville. Slightly different but i have heard that Valleta, Malta is good for a short break

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/10/2023 10:54

Granada, Rhonda, La Coruna. All beautiful.

DappledThings · 30/10/2023 11:02

Seville, Granada, Cordoba all fantastic

Unfortunate typo in first city on my first go

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 30/10/2023 11:05

San Sebastián

Ginmonkeyagain · 30/10/2023 11:13

Weather in Seville in Feb is nice -we went in late February a couple of years ago (just before covid) and it was dry and warm enough to walk around in jeans and a tshirt during the day. It is lovely for sight seeing and generally pottering around - loads of great bars and restaurants.

Valencia will also be nice - the benefit of Valencia is you can get the tram to the beach - it won't be warm enough for swimming or sun bathing but it is a beautiful area for walks etc..

Spanish cities are so much nicer and more interesting to holiday in than the beach resorts.
