(The hot chocolate maker from Hotel Chocolat)

Do you have one? Do you use it often? Must you buy the pre-grated chocolate from HC or would it work as well if you grate your own good quality bar?

I was close to buying one last year after trying a hot chocolate made with one, but never got round to it. This year I'm pregnant so there'll be no mulled wine / baileys / fizz other festive treat drinks.

I'm thinking about treating myself to one for a little indulgence on cold days, but I wonder if it'll end up gathering dust and it seems quite a lot for an appliance with just one function.

Thanks in advance.

We use a milk frother and it makes the most amazing hot chocolate using powder/grated chocolate. Just another option.

DustyLee123 · 29/10/2023 14:14

DD has one and uses it loads in the winter. We have HC sachets, bought for birthdays/Xmas, and she used grated chocolate that we buy. I think she puts hot choc powder in it too.

Interested in cheaper alternatives too

We have one and it makes lovely coffee too. We use ours most days.

SoupDragon · 29/10/2023 14:18

I tested one for MN last year. I think it's over priced. I found it a pain to clean as you have to hold the main unit under running water to clean it (despite people saying you can just put water/washing up liquid in it and set it running, I found I still end up with smears.

Ilikecurrybest · 29/10/2023 14:19

we use ours with the sachets in winter also use it to warm milk daily for coffees.

TakeMe2Insanity · 29/10/2023 14:19

We have the lavazza one but dupes are available.

icelollycraving · 29/10/2023 14:19

Ours is used everyday for milk for coffees. Ds likes hot chocolate made in it. I buy chocolate flakes on Amazon in bulk.
Dh bought one to use it work as well 🤣
My only criticism is that I like drinks hotter.
I thought it would be a dad but it’s been well used.

JustCheckingUp · 29/10/2023 14:22

I love mine, and as another poster said it does lovely coffee too

templeking · 29/10/2023 14:23

It's great. You can use powdered hot chocolate powder. No need to use grated chocolate.

BarbedButterfly · 29/10/2023 14:24

I use it all the time and get the chocolate from amazon. I also use it for chai lattes

SirVixofVixHall · 29/10/2023 14:25

I had one to try as part of the trial, I love it so much that I bought one each for two of my friends. I use the sachets but I also use any other hot chocolate. It takes a second to clean, fill with hot water, gentle sloosh about , pour out and dry.

plumtreebroke · 29/10/2023 14:25

Yes we have one and use it quite a lot, very quick to prepare the drink and works with any chocolate (grated), chocolate powders, Ovaltine type drinks. Easily cleaned just wipe around inside with a soapy sponge and rinse. The mixing bit lifts out to clean.

Potentialmadcatlady · 29/10/2023 14:26

Love mine.. very easy to use and clean. I only use grated choc for special occasions. Rest of time I use ordinary powder..generally cadburys and Starbucks when I fancy it

FoleyHuck · 29/10/2023 14:27

Ooh lovely, thanks all. I wonder if Hotel Choclat is still open.... BlushSmile

I only got mine last week but I love it. The kids absolutely love making hot chocolate. We don't just use the hotel chocolat sachets.

Glittertwins · 29/10/2023 14:52

Ours is starting to fail - looks like the magnetic part on the inside has worn away from where the whisk meets it. It's only ever been cleaned according to the instructions. It sometimes takes quite a few attempts for the whisk to actually start going. We've had it nearly 3 years and it's not used daily.

If you swill the cups out with boiling water before pouring the contents of the Velvetiser in them, then the drinks are hotter.

We use ours a lot and the Costa hot chocolate powder is our go to addition.

RigorMortisRadio · 29/10/2023 15:01

I use mine most days, for hot choc I use a mix of their sachets, normal powders or Callebaut chocolate callets (buy from Amazon).

I've had it for years from before the cheaper dupes became available, if I was buying one now I would probably look for a cheaper alternative although I've certainly had my monies worth from it.

Cookerhood · 29/10/2023 15:11

I have the Dualit milk frother. I understand it is exactly the same as the Velvetiser but black. It's been used every day for nearly 4 years (mainly for milk for coffee) & is fantastic & about half the price.
DD has an Aldi one (£20) which is also excellent although her first one broke quite quickly.

Saz12 · 29/10/2023 15:16

I bought one for DD (11 y old) Christmas last year. She loves it. It doesn't really do anything a saucepan and whisk couldnt do, but is nicer to use - its definitely in the gift / treat category rather than the "useful appliance" zone!

I find the heat disappointing too. I used to microwave the finished drink for up to 30 seconds whilst I rinsed out the machine.

RockStarship · 29/10/2023 20:08

I agree that it doesn't get it quite hot enough which is a shame. However, this is our third year with our Velvetiser and we have used it a lot. Not just for hot chocolate (we use chocolate flakes or chocolate powder) but also for chai lattes, milky coffees etc. It would be absolutely perfect if it only got a little hotter.

Peablockfeathers · 29/10/2023 20:14

I won one a while ago but have to say i love it! We use it for warm milk/hot chocolate for DS and then hot chocolate or coffees for us- easy to use and clean. I do agree it doesn't get the milk scalding hot, but I think it'd affect the taste of the grated chocolate if it did as when I've used a sachet with milk warmed up another way its not tested as good. Can grate any chocolate really or use powders, the hotel chocolat ones are lush though! My friend got one a few days ago for a decent price with their free VIP club, it was £60 something and could get 2 of the boxes of sachets for a reduced price with it. Worth keeping an eye out for deals!

Peablockfeathers · 29/10/2023 20:15

It is a dualit but to be honest when on offer the price isn't that different.
