It’s a wet Sunday afternoon, jobs are done, what can I watch that will draw me in (the grittier the better)

I’m losing the will to live over TV just now, I just can’t find anything I want to watch.

I love dark British/Welsh (occasionally American and Scandinavian)
dramas, complex characters, takes on historical true crime cases and social issues, I also really enjoy and moving or unforgettable documentaries

I really dislike glossy (unrealistic) characters and storylines, anything Spy/MI5 or as soon as the synopsis suggests as hint of science fiction and comedy.

Occasionally I’ll find a diamond that I’ve previously over looked because off it having the one of above themes in it (Life on Mars being one of series that I think I might like but put off with the time travel and that it might not be dark enough) The Handmaids Tale being the perfect example and one of the best things I’ve seen.

Things that I’ve really enjoyed over the last few years…

This is Britain
Happy Valley
Red Riding
Snow Angels
Craith/Hidden
Hinterland
Man hunt
True Detective
We need to Talk about Kevin
The Long Shadow
Sharp objects
Little Fires Everywhere
Mare of Eastown

Help me MN!! 🙏🏻

I watched Love and Death on itv x this morning. It's based on a true story and stars Elizabeth Olsen. I found it quite gripping

Muststopeating · 29/10/2023 13:34

Unforgotten (Nicola Walker detective series)... Available on ITVX.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 29/10/2023 13:34

A friend of mine thinks your life is worthless if you haven’t watched every single second of

The Shield

Maybe you have already? Then they’d suggest

Fauda

Personally, on a Sunday afternoon I’d take clever emotional violence, over physical violence. So:

The Bear
I May Destroy You
My Brilliant Friend

Luckymeluckyme · 29/10/2023 13:35

Chernobyl was excellently acted, that should have been on my original list I think.

Annika? Another Nicola Walker one

RunningFromInsanity · 29/10/2023 13:37

Can I make a rogue shout for a film I watch yesterday.
Redeeming Love (on Prime)

Did not know what to expect when reading the synopsis but it was outstanding.

Luckymeluckyme · 29/10/2023 13:38

The night off was ok but doesn’t make my list, I remember it getting quite unrealistic.

The Act with Patricia Arquette is Brilliant.
Also enjoyed The Cry on BBC.
You've put This is Britain, do you mean This is England? If so then you'd probably like The Virtues. Stephen Graham is amazing.

wherethewildtbingsgo · 29/10/2023 13:43

We absolutely loved Bodies on Netflix

Luckymeluckyme · 29/10/2023 13:43

@DiamondTiddler I’ve hovered over Love and Death a few times but I recently watched Candy (which I enjoyed) and it’s putting me off now that I already know the case.

Im the same with Dopesick (LOVED) and Painkiller.

Dope sick? American but realistic.

poorbuthappy · 29/10/2023 13:44

Oh cross posted. 😂

Nitgel · 29/10/2023 13:47

if you have BFI Molly Dineen's documentaries are on there, lie of the land is brilliant. as are the others.

Robotalkingrubbish · 29/10/2023 13:48

Breaking Bad
Better Call Saul
Ozark

Luckymeluckyme · 29/10/2023 13:48

@PerditaProvokesEnmity

I still think about I May Destroy you, that definitely should have been on my list.

I’ve tried The Shield a few times but find the visuals quite dated and therefore distracting.

Interestingly I binged Cracker a year or so back and loved every minute so maybe The Shield just didn’t pull me in.

Second dopesick. Not what I expected and Michael Keaton was fantastic in it

Honeyandwine · 29/10/2023 13:49

The fall
Strike
Happy Valley
Harlen coben adaptations on Netflix (there are a few)

Luckymeluckyme · 29/10/2023 13:49

@Its5656 I did mean This is England silly me.

EtiennePalmiere · 29/10/2023 13:49

Another vote for Bodies

Luckymeluckyme · 29/10/2023 13:50

@Robotalkingrubbish didn’t really enjoy any of these (1st series of Ozark was ok) too far fetched for me.
