What? I could only only see part of the announcement when I googled just now as. I don't Facebook. What did it say?

M&S sell russets but they've been a bit duff, this year. Lots of bad ones.

AlviarinAesSedai · 03/02/2024 17:37

@PickAChew on Facebook, I think family member(husband) is ill and she just can’t do it anymore.
It must have been incredibly stressful coping with bus stops outside and now her husband is ill.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 03/02/2024 17:38

Sad that proper traditional varieties are hard to come by now. Robinsons told me last autumn that they struggle to find growers now. Even they had fewer varieties of British apple in the autumn than they used to 10 years ago.

AlviarinAesSedai · 03/02/2024 17:39

Just double checked and her husband is gravely ill.

PickAChew · 03/02/2024 17:41

I was always surprised that they managed to endure the state of North road for so many years. I know that unless I was purposely catching the 64, it put me off going anywhere near.

AlviarinAesSedai · 03/02/2024 17:41

They don’t grow for favour anymore, just yield.

AlviarinAesSedai · 03/02/2024 17:43

Anyone local to Sacriston and use to go to ‘Santinos’ 🤢🤮🤢🤮. The owners just been to court.

yukkkkk, Ive just seen the article on the Chronicle. Rats, grease, filth ...

Gatekeeper · 03/02/2024 17:55

blue bins full of decomposing cockroaches and vermin...delicious!! 😩

Someaddedsugar · 06/02/2024 23:16

So sad about Robinson's!

And vile news about Santino's. We used to go to Pizza Top next door but Santino's used to always have a customer in 🤢

It was sad to see Robinsons all shuttered, this afternoon. I saw mention of it in the Northern Echo, the other day.

AlviarinAesSedai · 08/02/2024 13:59

It’s snowing ❄️☃️, I hate it.
We like Pizza Top. On the local Facebook page , they are being silly about Flames the new Turkish kebab place. Some raving about it and others rude!
Def want to try the Greek guy at Durham.

xsquared · 23/02/2024 17:07

Did anyone go to the fire and ice trail today? I'm planning on going with dd tomorrow.

AlviarinAesSedai · 23/02/2024 17:49

I’m going tomorrow, hope you enjoy. Will have to get there early as they melt faster than you think. Pleased the light shows are going to be earlier.

xsquared · 23/02/2024 18:03

Thank you @AlviarinAesSedai, I hope you enjoy it too. We are planning to go at 10.

Does anyone know where is good these days for lunch in Durham, that's not too studenty? Dd and I used to love Cafedral and Bean Social, but things changes after lockdown for the latter. I'm going to try Neighbourhood cafe in Hotel Indigo as we've not been before, but everywhere is so busy that I usually like to have a few more options just in case. TIA.

xsquared · 23/02/2024 18:20

Just catching up with posts from the last month or so.

It's really sad about Robinsons and of course sadder for the owners. They had quirky unusual things there I liked.

There is a fruit and veg stall in the market place of course, which is where I get Mackintosh apples from.

AlviarinAesSedai · 23/02/2024 18:31

The new Chinese/ Japanese place on silver street is lovely. And the Italian upstairs on silver street and there is Ruddy’s just opened (well a couple of weeks ago).

PacificCoastHighway · 23/02/2024 20:19

@xsquared - I've heard Bean Social is closing (or maybe they have plans to move, not sure). We like Coviello on Silver Street for nice but quick Italian (I think they do panini and pizzas and small portions of the adult pasta menu), no long wait for food and it's not usually busy with students. Lovely coffee too!

Also our kids like sushi / Katsu with rice so Kokoro and Nudo Sushi go down well, although Kokoro can be busy.

There's also an indoor cafe in the market place that our kids liked.

I find that the more traditional cafes (Cafedral and Vennels) are often really busy so we tend to avoid.

xsquared · 23/02/2024 20:37

Thank you both. I've not tried the new ones on Silver Street yet. It seems like there's a trend for more international street food and traditional tea rooms or coffee shops are being outnumbered.

AlviarinAesSedai · 23/02/2024 20:41

That’s sad about ‘Bean social’ I keep meaning to go, but when North Road was all bus stops I just couldn’t be bothered.
I also love Flat White, but it’s always heaving, queues out the door.
Leonards is a hidden gem Fowlers yard.
Is Coviello the barbers?

ChaiTeaLatte11 · 23/02/2024 21:36

I like the food in Flat White but the huge queue out the door is very off-putting!

I always forget about Leonard's, that's another good option.

Yes - Coviello is run by an Italian family and has the cafe/bar upstairs and a barber (and maybe a tattooist?) downstairs. It's a fairly casual place but the food is lovely, quick and we can usually get a table.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 23/02/2024 21:39

That's sad if Bean Social is closing, they tried so hard and they fundraised I think during bus chaos to stay open. It is lovely but you just don't go down North Road for pottering and coffee do you.

I basically only go to Durham for Collected Books and Meeple World. And since Ds1 works in one and the other takes my orders by email I generally order whatever I want and get ds to pick stuff up.

AlviarinAesSedai · 23/02/2024 22:10

I love Collected! The books are great and so if the coffee and cake.
I also like Maple Patisserie, not sure about savoury but the cakes are chef’s kiss.

AlviarinAesSedai · 23/02/2024 22:30

I’ve just checked Facebook and they are closing mid April (Bean Social) very sad. North Road just gets worse. The Chinese Japanese cafe supermarket on north road is closing or has already.

AlviarinAesSedai · 24/02/2024 13:55

Been to Fire and Ice was busy, enjoyed it.
And it was cold this morning but sunshine is very welcome.
