The Bishop Auckland Christmas Town is nice, go there instead ♥

AlviarinAesSedai · 25/11/2023 17:11

I got stuck in that on Thursday, they had the roundabout blocked. I wanted to go right up past college. No one would let me out!!
And they are only fixing bus stop county hall, not sure if both sides.
Would love to visit Bishop Christmas lights.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 25/11/2023 17:19

My knowledge of the villages around that way is pretty minimal. I think I've only been to Shildon for the museum too. Great leave to go with small children!

We're Gateshead taxis. I don't know what they are like now as I never get the bus really. The scarlet band drivers were great many moons ago when I got the bus with small dc. They ignored the bus stops and pretty much did a door to door service for all the old ladies in the outlying villages.

These days since school got rid of the buses the poor drivers have a tiny bus rammed with kids twice a day. And because of raac they have yet to have to do a day with all year groups. They might get a shock after christmas!

PickAChew · 25/11/2023 17:20

I've bought Ds2 a ticket for the Bishy lights - something to do when his carer gets him out of our hair for a few hours in the Christmas holidays.

Beeinalily · 25/11/2023 17:45

@OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea The Flying Scotsman is going to be (or already is?) at Shildon, so you might want to visit again!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 25/11/2023 17:50

Oooh cool. Although I'm not sure my 17 year old would be quite as impressed by that as he would have been when he was 5.

lifelongfrugaleer · 25/11/2023 19:28

We spent many a happy hour at locomotion.

are the bishop lights worth the. £66 family entry fee?

PickAChew · 25/11/2023 23:20

No idea. Adult ticket plus free carer for ds2. Worth it for the head space!

Rumour has it that Stagecoach in Sunderland and Newcastle have been trying to poach GNE drivers with pretty generous offers. Can't imagine arriva doing the same so we're less likely to wait 40 minutes for a 64, unfortunately.

SequentialAnalyst · 26/11/2023 01:41

I've been to Locomotion a fair few times.

If you want an interesting walk, check out Etherley Incline, near Phoenix Row. This is the start of the original Stockton and Darlington Railway, which was really constructed to get the coal out of the valleys near Bishop Auckland, and was worked by two stationary engines on inclined planes. Steam locomotives took over where Locomotion is now located. At the Brusselton Incline, you can still see the original winding house and stone sleepers. And I think you can now walk from there down to St Helen's Auckland on what used to be the railway line.

PickAChew · 27/11/2023 17:37

Durham here.

Apparently there has been a breakthrough and a pay proposal that Unite are recommending drivers accept 🤞

AlviarinAesSedai · 27/11/2023 17:38

Really @PickAChew ! I will try not to get excited.

Someaddedsugar · 27/11/2023 17:39
