Does anyone know anything about vintage (70’s) furniture?

We are clearing our grandparents house and have this 7 seater modular sofas (Fraylings) from the 70’s. It’s in decent condition for its age, would anyone know how much to ask for it? What would it be worth? There’s so few of them online that it’s difficult to know how much to expect for them.

only showing 4, there are another 3 modules around the room…plus a matching coffee table.

Would you really charge something for 50 year old sofas? Im not sure there would be too much demand. I'd be giving that away to someone in need.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/10/2023 19:57

You probably won't even be able to give them to a charity as they won't have fire safety labels.

PurplePanther1 · 27/10/2023 19:58

I thought you had to have a fire safety label attached to second hand sofas to be able to sell them. (possibly excluding antiques). If this is the case, I don't think you could sell it.

The only place that will take those is the dump

Your best bet is to phone an antiques shop somewhere trendy where this kind of thing sells with a huge markup

Brighton
Islington - try Criterion auction house if still operating

At auction you’d probably get £30-£40. My family run a successful antique auction house.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 27/10/2023 20:04

Oh that takes me back! But you won’t be able to sell without fire safety label surely?

This.

Who would buy them!

Theraffarian · 27/10/2023 20:22

Sofas only really sell on our local Facebook page if they are under 3 years old and in immaculate condition. Even then a whole set is unlikely to sell for more than £80 or so , but is normally given free . Whoever buys has to hire a van to move them . Our last one sold for a princely £20 .

Standardspots · 27/10/2023 20:24

There seems to be a market for them in specialist vintage shops for what I can see online. I’ll contact them. Thanks

I'm gripped to see the matching coffee table.

Theraffarian · 27/10/2023 20:32

I got curious so started some eBay searches on 1970s sofas that had actually sold , there seems a decent market on leather ones but not so much on fabric ones . The closest I could find that had sold recently was £125 for two sofas , but I guess it would depend how long you wanted to hold out for a buyer . Do update us when you sell them , it would interesting to know if they are in favour . I have a preference for incredibly unfashionable dark wood antique furniture, so I guess there’s a buyer for everything at the right price .

CharliesAngles · 27/10/2023 20:35

I actually love them 😬😳

They look very comfy and I bet the quality is second to none.

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 27/10/2023 20:35

I spend a lot of time looking for 60s and 70s furniture and I've honestly never seen a sofa like that for sale in any of the showrooms or websites I've visited. The nice wooden stuff like Ercol is where the serious money is, and everyone gets them reupholstered anyway. I doubt you could sell that for very much.

Standardspots · 27/10/2023 20:39

Pedantscorner that’s the exact type it is.

Ours is 7 pieces.

It's worth finding out. It certainly has a market, but a specialised one, and at auction is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

Do some research.

BramleyApplePieFair · 27/10/2023 20:52

My parents had this in tan and husbands Grandparents in pink. The most comfortable settee . We still have it but recovered. My daughters would bite your hands off if you are selling it , they regularly ask who is having it in our will

There are the 7 pieces. They are amazingly comfortable and extremely hard wearing. My grandparents looked after everything carefully. Apparently they were purchased at the Ideal Home Exhibition 😂
