Is there any chance of a single woman getting a 2 bed housing association house ?

I'm 35 and I'm currently in a 1 bed flat on band 3 (general needs )
I've been on housing list for 7 years now (same housing list my flats with )
I'm bidding on 2 bed houses and getting up to 20th position
Sometimes 15th ish
Do you think I'm wasting my time ?
What's the chances of me getting a 2 bed house ?

I can't find the poster but yes even a 1 bed house -obviously a 2 would be lovely.
I just want to feel secure and have my own front door.
Without having a communal entrance where people stand .
When I moved in I tried to keep it tidy -even put artificial flowers on landing but they got stolen.
Now you have people urinating in the entrance
It's really grim
I pay full rent -not subsided
I honestly don't think I'm a bad person for wanting better than that.
I wouldn't pay bedroom tax

@AuntMarch well then I hope you don't end up in somewhere as rotten as I live in
Then you will understand why I want to move

I think if the issues are this bad then you need to contact your neighbourhoods team and speak to them about ASB - forgive me if you've already tried this

Hi, unless you have a specific set of circumstances you would pay bedroom tax. Just wanted to flag re the affordability of this for you

Tumbleweed101 · 27/10/2023 08:24

Good luck, it doesn't sound like you are too far down the list to be at 8th place. All areas are different and some have far more properties than other areas.

I'm a single parent in a 3 bed council property. I won't ever be in a position to buy and I couldn't afford repairs etc on my income if I did. Our housing and cost of living is all based at two adults living together and both working full time. It is very hard to keep up on a single wage under about £50k.

I have looked at downsizing once my children move out but there is no obvious advantage as rents are pretty much the same whether it is a one bed flat or a three bed house. I'd quite like a two bed bungalow one day though (there are quite a few HA ones in my village) but I still have three children at home so I will see in a few years time.

loandbeholdd · 27/10/2023 08:26

@Beckafett how would I pay bedroom tax ?
I pay full rent from my wages not benefits so the h/a rent amount doesn't change
They don't charge more rent for a spare room

Bedroom tax is only relevant if you need financial housing support. If you can afford full rent then it doesn't impact you.

loandbeholdd · 27/10/2023 08:27

@housedramas hi I have reported it so many times
From noise /to hanging around in corridors /to dumping rubbish
Her solution is pushing a card through the door
I asked her then what ...and she says unless they ring me back ...nothing
And even if they ring her back and say they will stop ...and then don't it's tough

She would only have to pay bedroom tax if she was claiming benefits towards the rent. If she is paying the full rent herself out of wages then bedroom tax does not apply.

Beezknees · 27/10/2023 08:34

All you can do is try, or look at a swap.

I have a 2 bed as I have DS. When he grows up and moves out I will be looking at downsizing to a 1 bed. I'll be honest though, I wouldn't want to live somewhere like you describe. I do live in a flat myself but the building is fairly quiet and most of my neighbours are retired.

Indeed, my mental health has improved exponentially having an office to work from since I WFH for both of my jobs. One of my jobs is full time the other is freelance.

I work very hard and friends of mine who had kids with multiple useless men has been housed in a lovely 3 and 4 bed houses for years, (mostly paid for by housing benefit) while I’ve had to deal with some extremely unpleasant situations with houseshares which triggered earlier life trauma.

I could have broke down and signed up on long term disability and got ahead that way, but I didn’t.

OP I think you’ll get what you want eventually but it will take some time as pp have said.

To be fair a home office is a luxury for most people, single or not. I wfh most of the time and do not have a spare room for an office! I work in the dining room.

x2boys · 27/10/2023 08:38

I guess there's always a chance ,I live in a housing Association house and my next door neighbour is single with a,two bed house ,although she he's had varying family members staying with her over the years for prolonged periods of time
I suppose it depends on the availability in your area.

They can provide target hardening if you feel that you're property is specifically targeted. They can also put something called an ABC on those causing trouble. Quote these to them, always good to go in with some actual knowledge of what you know they may be able to do...

Westfacing · 27/10/2023 09:01

I'm sorry you have anti-social neighbours - it must be awful having them hanging around the common areas and urinating.

I can understand you wanting to get away from there but was struck by you hating living in a flat as it doesn't feel like home, and that you'd love space for a visiting friend. You don't need me to tell you that many people live in flats, including those with children, and most people don't have spare rooms.

Maybe if you stop thinking that a flat can't be a home you could try and transfer to a different one-bed flat. You do sound unhappy and I sincerely hope you can find your way to move.

Nonentity2023 · 27/10/2023 09:03

@loandbeholdd Good luck. I hope you get a lovely quiet home in a nice area with your own back and front door quickly. I can totally understand where you’re coming from. It would be so much better for all if there was more affordable housing with secure tenancies.

I’m very fortunate as a single person that I was able to buy a house twenty years ago. I don’t know if that would be possible now. The thought of being stuck in a horrible house because I couldn’t afford to buy my way out, or pay exorbitant rent, fills me with horror. A decent standard of living shouldn’t only be for the rich, or for those in a couple who have two incomes to share the bills.

Lavender14 · 26/10/2023 23:41

@Surreyclaire you mean come in with refugee status? Because you've no entitlement to secure social housing unless you've refugee status and have been granted leave to remain in the country.

Imagine wishing children homeless because they came from a different country.

No one is wishing them homeless but why should they keep being housed here when there isn't enough affordable housing for the people that already live here?

Comedycook · 27/10/2023 10:14

No one wants to live somewhere where people pee in the doorway or dump rubbish....but there are two types of people. Those who want better and think it's up to someone else to get it for them and those who want better and plan how to achieve that on their own. You do sound very entitled.

loandbeholdd · 27/10/2023 10:20

@Comedycook are you for real ? I work full time at a job what I'm skilled for and for the wage I'm skilled to receive
How do you expect me to magic a job with more money when I'm not skilled for this particular job ?
I sell any bits I can on vinted so I can raise any cash
If you have any other words of wisdom how I can make my employer of any other employers pay me more let me know please ?

This is nothing unusual. People work in job and often want more than what they have. We own our house and would love a spare bedroom but can't afford it. I'd love a house with a bigger garden. Most of us accept we have what we can afford or we attempt to earn more. It's an entire mentality

loandbeholdd · 27/10/2023 10:31

@Comedycook I'm assuming you live in a nice property and not a property you don't feel safe in
I can afford a 2 bed house with the housing association because I work and don't have the worry of bedroom tax
I don't want a private rent

OP posts:
Comedycook · 27/10/2023 10:33

This mentality is obviously ingrained in you. I have met many people like you. People who assume that any problem they have is the responsibility of others to sort out. Hence we will never agree.

loandbeholdd · 27/10/2023 10:35

@Comedycook who is sorting out my problems?
I'm not getting anything for free here
I'm working full time to provide for myself
I'm "entitled" to bid on 2 bed properties so that's what I do
I hope it doesn't take long to get it
With your mentality why should a woman who decided to have a child get a 2 bed house then?
If she can't house her child and expects social housing to help ?
How is that any different to me ?
It's not

OP posts:
Comedycook · 27/10/2023 10:35

But it's irrelevant anyway. You will probably get a place soon by the sounds of things...so I don't understand why you even started the thread unless it was just to wind people up.

loandbeholdd · 27/10/2023 10:38

It shouldn't wind anyone up...
Thanks
