He had family, yet this man lay dead in bed for 20 years. So awful for them to think for all those years that he had gone nc, only to discover he had actually died and no one knew!

@TheBunnyLover @CrashyTime Actually I was thinking of Sheila Seleoane but similar in that she was in housing association property, block of flats, TV left on. There have been several others mentioned in this thread though which just shows it happens all too often.

"In this country, you don’t communicate with your neighbours.”

That sums it up, but many people also like the anonymity of the big city, so it is difficult to strike a balance between intrusive/nosey and caring/sharing, but obviously in this case the HA have fucked up.

English couple found dead in isolated Tipperary bungalow left estate worth hundreds of thousands. Nicholas Smith (82) and his wife Hilary (79) were found at their home in Cloneen after not being seen for 18 months

This happened in 2022. A couple who were as isolated as the man in Mallow.

A RECLUSIVE woman shared a double bed with her sister who had been dead for up to a year, an inquest was told yesterday

The two elderly Co Mayo sisters lived such a reclusive lifestyle that when one of them died it remained a secret, not only to the local community, but also to a brother with whom they shared a rural bungalow

And the above in 2004.

I get how the first one happened, maybe, did they die at the same time, or commit suicide together? The second one is totally weird, how come the brother didnt know, and why didnt they report the death, and WTF is sharing the bed about?

TheGander · 28/10/2023 17:19

There are some very weird set ups behind closed doors.

There was obviously a mental health issue connected to the second one. To continue to share a bed with a corpse is not the action of a mentally well person.

FufuTime · 28/10/2023 18:32

@HopefulSeller believe me I have. He is violent and aggressive, it was one of the reasons I left left our family home years ago. He threw a pan at me whilst I was pregnant, my mother said absolutly nothing and allowed him to continue despite it being her house. I left that day.

Intetesting, but that an insane way to go about it. What if the person inside is deaf / incapacitated in some way?

HumanBurrito · 28/10/2023 18:52

A case ages ago on an army base in Colchester , I think, Where the husband was overseas an the young mum died of a brain haemhorrage.

Oops, meant to quote the post about the council worker whose job was boarding up properties.

I think I remember that one. Was there also a baby? It was awful. I remember my mother being upset watching the six o clock news.

I think that was the one where her little boy died, too, wasn't it? Absolutely dreadful thing to happen.

Neither. They both died of natural causes but at different times. But it was impossible to be more specific after so long.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/10/2023 00:00

Of course it's strange. But there are some very odd set-ups and it's unfair to apply our own sensibilities to them.

I know of a few very reclusive people living rurally, less so as time passes, but they are doing so my choice, and when alive, are happy to live that existence.

Taytocrisps · 29/10/2023 12:18

They'll be reporting on this story on RTÉ Radio 1's ' This Week' programme at 1 p.m.

RallyRallyAppreciateIt · 31/10/2023 22:42

Did you catch the program @Taytocrisps ?

It was just a news item on the hour long news programme on radio.

So again an unreported death and a body kept somehow, or just left where it was when the person died? There was a case in Edinburgh a few years ago where a guy had kept both his parents, he had the skills to preserve the bodies, in the back of his shop for ten years, can`t remember all the details but I think he got jailed.

Sorry, there is a BIG difference between living in a cabin in the woods alone and sharing a bed with a corpse, concealing the death from the authorities, AND not even telling your brother (who lives in the same house)!

EarringsandLipstick · 03/11/2023 09:12

Investigations revealed that both of them had made an active decision to die this way. They had underlying health issues, but didn't take their own lives directly.

No one to report - it's not clear exactly of the timeline but by the time the first person died, the second was also weak / unwell.

Tragic and unusual but in keeping with their choices in life in general.

EarringsandLipstick · 03/11/2023 09:15

@CrashyTime

I'm not talking about 'living alone in the woods'. I'm talking about individuals living rurally - but still with others on relatively close proximity - who isolate themselves significantly. I know some people like this. (It's reduced somewhat with modern technology).

Of course the specific case you mention is utterly bizarre to most people; to the individuals concerned, who'd lived a life of reclusion & clearly with associated MH / personality issues, it felt like a reasonable decision.
