Help! EV charger emergency!

arbitraryarsehole · 23/10/2023 21:54

Arrived at our accommodation in the lakes that husband booked because it has an EV charging point & I've forgotten the cable 😩

We're now on 5% and the only ones within a safe distance are sockets only. There don't seem to be any I don't need the cable for.

What do I do? I was hoping there'd be another person with an EV vehicle here I could borrow from, but there doesn't seem to be 😭

Order a cable on Amazon prime? That's if you can just buy them though, I've no idea as know nothing about EVs...

RoseAndRose · 23/10/2023 21:59

Which sort of charger is it?

Best bet will be a garage/service centre of the right marque

And make a huge note to yourself never to take it out of the car (hard to fathom why you did in the first place, tbh)

Have you tried posting in the EV Drivers UK Facebook group?
There may be a member close to you who can help.

Do you have breakdown cover? They might come out and charge you up a bit more so you can get to a charger with cables.

ScaredAndPanicky · 23/10/2023 22:32

I bought a cable on amazon prime for about £100

feliciabirthgiver · 23/10/2023 22:36

Have you got your other charging cable, the three pin plug? Trickle charge until you've got enough to get to a rapid charger where you don't need a cable.

arbitraryarsehole · 23/10/2023 22:46

I haven't got either cable, which I realise is ridiculous! I always charge it at home or occasionally at a rapid charge point. We don't go away often & I just didn't think. Such a stupid mistake ☹️

There us a company that will come to you to charge you up - can't remember the name though. Will get you out of the current hole until you get a new cable

StillWantingADog · 23/10/2023 22:52

Take it you can’t get to Booths in Windermere?

I think you will just have to Amazon prime a new cable.

worth asking on the Facebook group UK Electrical Vehicles Owners Club. Or I can on your behalf if you inbox me where you are.

schloss · 23/10/2023 22:55

Where in the Lakes are you in order to find the nearest car dealer for your car make, I am sure they will be able to help somehow if you speak to them in the morning. Most car dealers are in Kendal, Workington or Carlisle.

Worse case, one of you can bus/taxi/train to a dealer to get a replacement cable - you may even find they will drive you back, or deliver the cable to you.

Showmethemoneyyy · 23/10/2023 23:03

I would join a local community Facebook page, there’s bound to be someone nearby who would lend one.

TheCumbrian · 23/10/2023 23:11

Where are you? The lakes is a big place!

arbitraryarsehole · 23/10/2023 23:13

@StillWantingADog that would be great if you don't mind! (Whist I'm waiting to be accepted) we are currently at Near Sawrey

OP posts:
schloss · 23/10/2023 23:18

If you are in Sawrey then as has been mentioned Booths in Windermere is close (but of course you need the cable) and Kendal is close if you need to source cables from dealers which may be quicker than ebay/Amazon?

There is also a Halfords in Kendal which will sell cables.

If you can get to Bowness on Windermere (probably as a foot passenger across the lake) the 555 bus will take you into Kendal - they run at least every hour if not every 30 minutes, alternatively, from Windermere the train will take you into Kendal.

TheCumbrian · 23/10/2023 23:41

Is the one at Pure Lakes no good? It says there are 3 connectors there?

TheCumbrian · 23/10/2023 23:49

As in... might be worth giving them a ring and seeing if there's anyone there who can help with a cable.

StillWantingADog · 24/10/2023 08:04

Is it a type 2 cable you need?

StillWantingADog · 24/10/2023 08:07

Is it a type 2 cable you need?

I have posted on the fb group assuming you’re after a type 2.

arbitraryarsehole · 24/10/2023 08:13

@TheCumbrian yes that is my first plan! Ring the 2 very local ones this morning and see if anyone can loan us a cable.

OP posts:
StillWantingADog · 24/10/2023 08:14

Re Booths in Windermere you don’t need cables for InstaVolt rapids. But anywhere with chargers might be a useful place to ask other EV drivers. We are a friendly bunch.

arbitraryarsehole · 24/10/2023 08:42

Yes type 2! Thank you

Yes type 2! Thank you

Had some replies. Best suggestions are

  • Booths Kendal (tethered rapids) only 5 miles via the chain ferry
  • you can use Tesla destination chargers if not a Tesla (unless you have certain Chademo cars eg. a pre 2018 Nissan Leaf). They have tethered cables. There is one at the Kellbank Hotel near you - supposed to be for guests only however worth calling and explaining your situation. To work they need to have a grey label. This is not tried and tested by me but what the experts say so worth a try if very close.
  • Breakdown insurance should come and tow you to the nearest charger (eg Booths in Kendal).
ElleLeopine · 24/10/2023 13:17

@arbitraryarsehole how are you getting on, are you sorted?

Is the cable you need a type 2 to type 2?
What model do you have?
