Have you switched your heating on yet?

Usually we have our heating on by this time of the year. So far, we’ve not used it once!

Who has started using their heating and when?

I guess it will be area and house dependent. We’re in London but only have single glazing and 14ft ceilings.

About a month ago - Scotland. I usually try to leave it until start of October, but it was just too chilly.

MaidOfSteel · 23/10/2023 09:21

We've had the central heating on once, overnight a few days ago when it got really cold. We have a real fire in the living room, which is also my husband's office, and we've had that on a few times. We're in Scotland.

defi · 23/10/2023 09:22

Yes I wanted to hold out till November but the temp really dropped last week. Thankfully been fairly mild this week

Mylobsterteapot · 23/10/2023 09:25

I had it on on next the week before last, when it was both cold and wet.

DaftyInTheMiddle · 23/10/2023 09:25

How many threads asking the same question does one site need? If we gathered all these stupid “have you put your heating on yet!?” threads, and put them into an incinerator we could generate enough energy to power everyone’s bastard heating all year round.

FallingAutumnLeaf · 23/10/2023 09:32

YES!
It's 12C in work this morning. They have just put the heating on. It will take til mid afternoon for it to warm up.
Its been on and off at home for about a week.

ActDottie · 23/10/2023 09:38

No not yet I doubt we will until January

Bbq1 · 23/10/2023 09:43

I am a very hot person but I've been freezing for weeks. We were trying to hold off on it until November but gave in about a, week ago we have it on 4 hours a day and im still cold. I'm not well though and sitting around a lot. I've just had to put the fire on for a few mins.

Justme10 · 23/10/2023 09:48

Yes a few of times over the last week and they have mostly been in the morning. The house was 15° this morning. I'm in Scotland.

35965a · 23/10/2023 09:51

Just in the morning and evenings for an hour or so to take the chill off. I have it set on automatic to come on between 6.30-8am then 6.30-8.30pm but set the thermostat at about 19/20 so it just clicks on if it needs to between these times. It’s not too cold so it isn’t on for more than an hour really.

user1471556818 · 23/10/2023 10:43

Yes Scotland. Have had to scrape the car in the mornings a couple of times as well.

tealcat · 23/10/2023 10:45

No, we don’t normally need it on until November. We’ve started wearing warmer clothes but the heating isn’t required yet.

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/10/2023 08:08

Yup, last week but not on any schedule. Just on for a bit when it's very cold. It's very cold this morning and we had our first minus temperature last week.

Yep. Not on any schedule yet just an hour or two boost usually first thing, or early evening as temp drops or an hour or so before bedtime. I'm wearing lovely cozy layers of fleece but sometimes the atmosphere feels chilly so the boost helps. 🌹

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/10/2023 11:06

No, don’t exoect to for another few weeks.

VapeHelp · 23/10/2023 11:09

Ours kicked in automatically one morning last week, for the first time since April. I put it on intentionally on Friday, when it was peeing down and the kids shoes and coats were soaked after school.

Its currently 16.5° in the house, but I have fluffy socks and a warm hoodie. Def getting chillier.

Yes, but you could say that about many threads. Most are repeats of something, or variations on a theme. If we could only post original thoughts/questions, there's very little that would be allowed. Also, if someone finds an old thread and posts on it, inevitably someone complains and asks why they're ressurrecting an ancient thread. Anyway, since I'm on this 'stupid' thread, the answer is no, I haven't turned the heating on yet. Some time in November.

RoseMartha · 29/10/2023 21:17

I have set it to come on if the temp drops below 18. This will be for 40 mins in morning and an hour and a half in the evening. So far the room temps are still over 20 but i do have to keep an eye on the thermostat as if one of my teens are cold they turn it up to max instead of putting clothes on. It came on the other day for this reason and i turned it right back down again and suggested to my elder teenager that walking abt in bra and pants wasnt enough clothes for October she needs to wear actual clothes before complaining she is cold!🙄

anonimoxyz · 29/10/2023 21:24

Not yet. We sometimes put on a room heater in our front room but that's more for the kids and my partner. I'd happily live without heating tbh

ButWhatIsIt · 29/10/2023 21:28

I've been putting it on in the evening over the last week or so as it's been quite chilly.

Ibizafun · 29/10/2023 22:25

Yes we have stone downstairs so without under floor heating it's miserable

you may think it's a 'stupid' thread.

i think it's more stupid to open threads you're not interested in, then post to say it's stupid 🙄🙄🙄

Pinkpinkpink15 · 29/10/2023 22:43

I have had mine on a few times, it dropped to 0° degrees here a couple of weeks ago, then back up to 10°.

I put it on the other evening when a friend came over because not everyone runs as hot as me & I'd hate a friend to be cold..

@RoseMartha Haha, yes to wearing clothes. A few yrs ago May was unusually cold but one day was bright and sunny, and that brought a few people out in shorts, t shirts and flip flops in 14 degrees. I overheard one such person complaining about being 'fucking freezing'. The obvious response would have been 'try wearing some clothes'. I wondered how many of these people had the heating on at home, probably many of them. Meanwhile I was wearing jeans, t shirt, sweatshirt and coat, and had turned off the heating for the summer.

Yes, a complete waste of time, but isn't that what MN is all about? Or in many cases, the internet in general?

@Idontpostmuch

No. It may actually be a waste of time (Using MN, whatever else on the Internet), but it's not an intentional wasting of time.

it's a way of connecting with people, maybe helping some people, whatever.

but most of us don't open threads to post pointless crap & be annoying, or complain about someone posting a thread about something we aren't interested in.
