Very grubby workmen going into pub after work..

I was out walking the other day and noticed a bunch of young workmen going into a pub after work. They were in their work clothes, but one in particular was really grubby. His jeans covered in grease and dirt.

I realize they were going to a pub, but same pub's clientele gets a bit fancier dressed later on, and many office workers go there for lunch. Some of the seats are padded vinyl, the ones up against the wall are upholstered in cloth.

What do you thing the protocol for this would be from the server's point of view? Direct him to the vinyl seats, give him a newspaper to sit on, refuse him entry? I know I wouldn't want to sit in the seat after he had been there.

IME, most blokes who call into the pub for a quick one at the end of the day stand at the bar, I don't believe they all sat huddled round a table in their work clothes on the velour seats reserved for the bankers that call in later.

I haven't read whole thread but I know someone who works down drains with all sorts floating around and his trousers never change, they could stand up on there own and he often sits down a crowded pub with his mates.I can understand it

My husband is a tradie. He travels with work and often is working until 7/8pm and they need to go straight to somewhere serving food without changing so they can actually get a decent hot meal down them rather than knocking a kebab back in the street (which I think you would presume the oiks to do). He looks manky but it could be stains. Or dried on, not likely to transfer etc. He’s not going to stand up to eat, but they would chose the vinyl seats over cloth if there was an option and they were actually transferably dirty.

I don’t think I’ve ever sat in a chair and gotten dirty from it apart from getting chewing gum stuck in me. Stop being precious.
