Terrible post interview cringe

Techniques needed to forget today please?!!!
I had the most ridiculously complicated day yesterday, got to bed exhausted, had youngest child in to my bed and got a total of 3 hours sleep. Bribed him with a disgusting Twinkie cake thing to get him to school because I had an interview.
I waffled soooo badly in interview. I wanted to call it quits early on but felt unprofessional so I kept talking rubbish for a full hour. I drank half a pot of coffee beforehand because I was so tired which wasn't a great idea.

Well firstly it might not be as bad as you thought. But I'd try to distract yourself. So if the thoughts creep In, say out loud "I'm not thinking about that" and distract yourself with something else

Chickolot · 18/10/2023 21:20

Could have written this. Haven't had an interview in a few years. Had one today which was for an interesting sounding role but not an exact fit for me.
I had 2 of the 3 skills required. But interviewer said the 3rd was most important and then for the rest of it I waffled like crazy. Answered mumbling, repeating phrases, sounded generally not very articulate.
Really awful. Online too, think I'd be better able for this in person.
Feel awful tonight and questioning myself and my professionalism.
Tomorrow is a new day. 😀

coxesorangepippin · 18/10/2023 21:23

I'm sure you did fine

I insinuated in my interview that I was somehow in a gay relationship with my sister in law 🫨😳 (I'm married to her male brother) and they still gave me the job so there is still hope for you!!

Hibambinos · 18/10/2023 21:26

I’ve had this!!! Lol!! I talked so fast with nerves I was like spud from trainspotting!

forgive yourself , let it go, move on.
it happens to the best of us OP.

Wow, how did this even come up 😄?

Ishouldhavegonebacktobed · 18/10/2023 21:36

I'm starting to feel a bit better! Thank you.

I answered a question and then said ask me down the pub and I might give you a different answer. What was I thinking.

@coxesorangepippin brilliant!

This could've been written by me last week! I had an interview for the first time in many years and I can't even explain the cringe! Hiding in my Oodie as I type cos it felt that embarrassing. I just talked utter shite throughout the whole thing and must've sounded like such a nob. Even my application form made me sound like a wanker. Ahhhh the cringe is awful! But thank you for posting cos at least we know we aren't alone!

Porageeater · 18/10/2023 21:38

We have all been there! I’ve had terrible interviews and also one I thought was a car crash but I got the job.

I’ve done lots of interviewing too and I would never think any less of someone just because they weren’t their best on the day. Try to distract yourself.

Ishouldhavegonebacktobed · 18/10/2023 21:41

I genuinely feel better that others have had the same feelings.

Yup! Had this recently, too. It was the two out of three scenario with me as well. In my day, I’ve blagged my way into loads of jobs. Nowadays, it’s the tech. I can’t fake the skills!

Smartstuffed · 18/10/2023 21:46

I've had many cringe interviews over the years. One where it didn't seem to go too badly but I realised after the event that I'd managed to apply make-up to only one of my eyes...

Maybe they just thought you were edgy and cool? 🤣

Bloops · 18/10/2023 21:56

Literally had this last week. You can imagine my shock when they offered me the job 😶 I did end up turning it down because I was also offered one more suited to me.
You'll cringe for a good few days 😂 but then you will just think f* it!

Loubelle70 · 18/10/2023 22:03

When i went for my present job I'd had minimal sleep (was still in previous job)..went to interview and was going ok...great interpersonal skills, said i had great organizational skills, etc.
End of interview...proceeded to shake their hands and leave room only to go back into the room with my interviewers, forgot my handbag 😂 .... Organizational skills lol...i made a joke about it..i got the job. Relax x

Chafingthedream · 18/10/2023 22:15

Believe me, we have all been there. I had an interview over Zoom in 2021. I rarely use Zoom, so was already a bit nervous, making sure I had the right link and that I could join the interview at the right time. I did manage to log on ok, but imagine my horror when introducing myself to the panel of four very serious, very professional interviewers when I saw that I still had our family quiz team name as the name that appeared on my screen (bloody lockdown quizzes!). The interviewers got straight in asking me questions about my experience whilst I flapped about trying to change my name from “Getting Quizzy With It”. It totally threw me off and I waffled absolute shite for the next 30 minutes.

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 18/10/2023 22:19

@Chafingthedream 😂😂😂

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 18/10/2023 22:19

I’ve got an interview on Friday and this thread is half amusing, half worrying me…I’m an awful waffler when I’m nervous!!!

Notimeforaname · 18/10/2023 22:22

I cried in an interview, got the job.

MiddleOfHere · 18/10/2023 22:39

I waffled my way through an interview question so badly, that I actually forgot what the question was and had to ask the interviewer to repeat the question.

Also had interviews where I had various wardrobe/person malfunctions - like shirts buttoned up the wrong way, random things stuck to me/my clothes in stupid places (not that there's a good place to have random debris stuck to you)

I cried in an interview, got the job.

This gives me hope, I'm utterly useless at interview.

MrsSchadenfreude · 18/10/2023 22:49

I had an interview last week that I thought went reasonably well. Got feedback today that said my answers were generic and not in line with the role, and that I lacked a vision on how I would take the role forward. If that wasn’t bad enough, they then threw in that my experience was irrelevant to the role. So why bother interviewing me?

Moneyjealousy · 18/10/2023 22:49

My worst interview was when they asked me if I had any weaknesses i looked at him totally deadpan and said "no I'm pretty amazing"
I kept saying in my head "start laughing.....start laughing you need to salvage this so they think it's a joke" but I just sat staring 🙈🙈🙈

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 18/10/2023 22:53

I had one last week and there was a question about a key framework for the role which I had never even heard of. I can still picture the interviewer’s face as I said I didn’t know, but assumed (actually correctly as it turned out) it was X, Y,Z. I didn’t get it but got very good feedback on everything else, just that another candidate was stronger on the technicalities.

I tested positive for Covid the same night so am blaming that!
