I want a new surname (suggestions)

A bit random perhaps to some people, but I really want to change my surname!
What are the nicest surnames that you know? Any suggestions?

Background -
My surname from birth, I've always thought it was plain and boring, and it's very common.
I always imagined I would change it when I married, but I never got married, and I'm now late 40s and don't plan to marry even if I eventually meet "the one".
I don't have children, my dad is gone now, my mother has the same surname only through marriage to my dad, my siblings have different surnames through marriage, and I don't feel any particular attachment to extended family so I've no need to "honour" their name.
So I thought I'd treat myself to a new name! I want a name that when I introduce myself, people might think "that's a nice name". Something not overly common, but not so unusual that I have to spell it out repeatedly either. I am English, but I spent five years total living in different parts of Scandinavia so perhaps would be nice to choose a link to that part of my life, but doesn't need to be.

We've done this as a family. I love my surname (kept when married), DH hates his. Our kids are double barrelled. We debated him changing to his Mum and Grandads simple and lovely surname, but it would then have given one of our children the initials AS-S, which is a no obviously.

We spent a year or so choosing a name that we liked, we looked at bird names, loved Starling (hence my name on here) but decided against it as our family would drop the 'g'! Went for another bird name in the end which is simple but lovely. I'll keep my surname as well but likely as a middle name when we get round to making it official, we've been going by our new family name for a few years now though.

That sounds like the characters from some new kids' action cartoon - with the last one being the token female character, who doesn't actually do anything exciting like the boys, but just keeps telling herself that she must remember to #bekind.

Ooh I'm really liking Lark! That could work really well.

Also liking this idea.

If I had to change my name I'd call myself Josephine St John.

Neither are remotely close to my maiden or married name, I just love them together 😊😊

I used to say hello to a very old and neglected gravestone in our local church when I did my daily dog walk.
Nicholas De La Mare. I think he sounded fabulous. So , De La Mare would be my vote.
Or being a history buff I'd maybe go for Tudor or Plantagenet!

I used to look after a couple called mr and Mrs Greenaway, which I thought was lovely, as were they.

Whats your mums name, use that maybe but add child to it so if shes called eleanor call yourself elleschild.

HoHoHoliday · 19/10/2023 13:37

I think, for me, one of the reasons I thought of giving myself a new name is that it will be mine. So I don't want to choose an existing family name, or relatives maiden name, or be known as daughter/child of someone. I am my own person!
More people should choose their own names, or feels quite liberating 😊
