I want a new surname (suggestions)

A bit random perhaps to some people, but I really want to change my surname!
What are the nicest surnames that you know? Any suggestions?

Background -
My surname from birth, I've always thought it was plain and boring, and it's very common.
I always imagined I would change it when I married, but I never got married, and I'm now late 40s and don't plan to marry even if I eventually meet "the one".
I don't have children, my dad is gone now, my mother has the same surname only through marriage to my dad, my siblings have different surnames through marriage, and I don't feel any particular attachment to extended family so I've no need to "honour" their name.
So I thought I'd treat myself to a new name! I want a name that when I introduce myself, people might think "that's a nice name". Something not overly common, but not so unusual that I have to spell it out repeatedly either. I am English, but I spent five years total living in different parts of Scandinavia so perhaps would be nice to choose a link to that part of my life, but doesn't need to be.

Rose

Azalea

Rose is perfectly fine if you're born with it or marry somebody called it, but it's a bit ordinary and a wasted opportunity to choose it out of the blue if you're deliberately looking for a fabulous new surname to embrace in the next chapter of your life.

Azalea could work - as famous singing Iggys go, I'd choose 'Azalea' over 'Pop' any day!

Mansfield
Carmichael
or my favourite Kinsella

I’ve always liked strong surnames - Stone and Steele come to mind. For the Nordic influence how about: Sorensen, Olsen or Viking names that sound British like MacAulay and Rendal.

Pick something from the beginning of the alphabet so you will always be toward the top of any list.

I was going to say similar. I like A names!

Amos is a favourite (first name or surname!)

I like Cathcart as a surname.

How many syllable does your first name have @HoHoHoliday

HoHoHoliday · 18/10/2023 10:33

Good morning helpful name suggesters!

First name is a very normal well-known two-syllable beginning with L.

Aardvark?! I could well imagine a global Hollywood star called Linda Aardvark!

ThreeRingCircus · 18/10/2023 11:59

I really like alliterative names so would be looking for something beginning with L.

Lindberg (Swedish, so a nod to Scandinavia but not difficult to pronounce.)

Lewis (Old English, meaning brightness)

Lambert (means bright land)

Lennox (just because it's cool)

RuthW · 18/10/2023 12:02

I've always fancied being Mrs Button, Flower or Diamond.

Puffinshop · 18/10/2023 12:04

I think if your first name ends with a vowel (Lisa, Laura), a surname that begins with a consonant sounds best (like not Lisa Anders).

If it ends with a consonant (Lauren, Louise) then preferably not something that starts with the same letter (like not Louise Summer or Lauren Nightingale). It's not dreadful but if you're going to pick something new might as well make it as good as possible!

I've always liked Beaufort and Kerr. But you seem to appreciate nature sort of names - Snow?

I know you didn't say you were considering it but for god's sake not a fake 'Icelandic' name. Even if you know how to construct them grammatically and pronounce it correctly, nobody else will.

Could your middle name or one of a family member be adapted to make a surname?
