I want a new surname (suggestions)

A bit random perhaps to some people, but I really want to change my surname!
What are the nicest surnames that you know? Any suggestions?

Background -
My surname from birth, I've always thought it was plain and boring, and it's very common.
I always imagined I would change it when I married, but I never got married, and I'm now late 40s and don't plan to marry even if I eventually meet "the one".
I don't have children, my dad is gone now, my mother has the same surname only through marriage to my dad, my siblings have different surnames through marriage, and I don't feel any particular attachment to extended family so I've no need to "honour" their name.
So I thought I'd treat myself to a new name! I want a name that when I introduce myself, people might think "that's a nice name". Something not overly common, but not so unusual that I have to spell it out repeatedly either. I am English, but I spent five years total living in different parts of Scandinavia so perhaps would be nice to choose a link to that part of my life, but doesn't need to be.

I know a lady who gave herself Summer for her new surname...

So much depends on your first name, whether it will work with the surname. I love alliterative names. Are you prepared to share your first name on here?

I like the idea of anonymity, so I’d pick something like Smith!

but I like names like:

newman
regan
campbell
wright
griffin
Thomas

I've always fancied McKenzie.

My GMs' maiden names were Rose and Noble. I'd happily take either of them.

goldennavy · 17/10/2023 22:13

Darling
Beautiful surname

Beenhereforever1978 · 17/10/2023 22:14

I'm doing this for slightly different reasons, my passport in my (then) married name is expiring next year so I'm choosing a new surname. Some lovely ones here!

INeedAnotherName · 17/10/2023 22:14

I'm having a similar problem. Hate maiden name, hate married name and tired of spelling them out. So went looking at the maternal line for inspiration. The only one that won't need spelling out is Jones which doesn't go with my Christian name at all sighs

Hopefully I can steal yours Grin

Love is a nice surname.

CarrieMoonbeams · 17/10/2023 22:16

Worthington.
Kinsella.
Anderson.

Opine · 17/10/2023 22:17

I wouldn’t choose anything that would make anyone question your lineage. A French or Irish name for example.

IdaPrentice · 17/10/2023 22:18

Apparently novelists use place names for surnames of characters (and surnames as place names) - so any nice villages around where you were brought up, or now? - or in Scandinavia?

Beautifulsunflowers · 17/10/2023 22:18

My favourite surname is Appleby.
Other suggestions
Cartmel
Kendall
Blythe
Maple
Nicholls

Is there a place you have loved visiting that you could choose as a surname? See my first 2 suggestions as examples.
Or look back in your family tree - think of first names that can work as surnames too.

Beignet · 17/10/2023 22:19

I would get a month membership to ancestry and go back through the family tree as far back as you can go.

Then chose your favourite surname.

2764mice · 17/10/2023 22:22

By the same token I also like Marling.

I've recently changed my surname, post divorce, to my mother's maiden name. Partly because I like it and partly as a nod to matriarchy. It's very outing, so can't say what the name is. Good luck. I've no regrets and a few compliments when I introduce myself.

KnickerlessParsons · 17/10/2023 22:26

I'd love to be Mrs Christmas.

Or something ridiculous like Pendlebury-Farquhar or Shufflebottom or Mrs Schafernaker

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/10/2023 22:30

Rainbow is the best surname I've come across, although I also like Beebee, which apparently is a proud old English surname or Saxon origin.

Lesina · 17/10/2023 22:31

If I could chase my surname I would absolutely change it to D’eath. Just love it :)

GeorgeSpeaks · 17/10/2023 22:32

Midwinter
