Chicken Shop...

OneMoreStepAlongTheRoadIGo · 17/10/2023 15:18

Is this a common phrase where you live?

Is it literally a shop which sells chicken (like KFC? Nandos?)

Why not say KFC or are there lots of little indpendent shops?

I feel I've got to middle age without knowing this term...

Yes, it's one of those fried chicken shops you find on run down High Street. Oddly, not KFC, that would be called KFC, but the independent ones.

Whataretheodds · 17/10/2023 15:22

In South London where I live there a lots of shops that sell fried chicken but they are not KFC.

Needmorelego · 17/10/2023 15:22

I live in South London. "Chicken Shop" is basically a fried chicken takeaway place. KFC and Morelys are the chain ones but there is approximately 10 million independents some with ridiculous/hilarious variations of the name (Kansas Fried Chicken etc).

South East London, all the time! We had a KFC, never went there, always when to the other chicken shop (team morleys!!)

Same as getting a kebab really, you don't say the name of the shop, you day you're going to tye kebab shop

Screenskeen · 17/10/2023 15:22

So many independent shops with similar names only KFC gets called KFC everything is is just chicken and chips.

This. Typical ones could be Chicken Cottage, but any number of made up names such as:
Louisiana Fried Chicken
Miami Crispy
Kansas Fried Chicken

They sell fried chicken, usually halal.

Needmorelego · 17/10/2023 15:23

It is like saying "going to the chipshop".

DrMarshaFieldstone · 17/10/2023 15:25

I think it started as a London thing. A chicken shop is a takeaway, usually open late-night, which sells fried chicken and chips.

Paradoxically, KFC is not a chicken shop.

Watch some of Amelia Dimoldenberg's Chicken Shop Date videos on YouTube (the Louis Theroux interview is vg) or the Pengest Munch channel, also on YT, if you want to know more!

MadamVastra · 17/10/2023 15:25

There was a tv show called chicken shop! Loved it

Needmorelego · 17/10/2023 15:26

Also like saying "I'm popping round the shop" which could be Co-op, Spar, Londis, Budgens, Premier..... depending on what you've got. They are all just "the shop" 😂

RainbowZebraWarrior · 17/10/2023 15:27

Years ago, when I used to live on the outskirts of a city, there was one literally called The Chicken Shop. I think there's also a chain called Chicken Cottage as well as other independent ones. All colloquially known as 'The Chicken Shop'

My friend also calls the off licence The Bar Shop.

There's one somewhere near me now called Chick Pizz. It's something I've seen on just eat. I cannot get my head around the name (I mean I guess they do Chicken and Pizza) every time I try to say it out loud it sounds like Chick Piss or Chick Pits Such an odd choice of name. Pizza Chick would have been better surely?

Needmorelego · 17/10/2023 15:28

I do believe that when South London babies are born they get injected with a secret chicken spice formula along with the Vitamin K jab that makes them all addicted to that horrible looking chicken 😂

Needmorelego · 17/10/2023 15:29

@RainbowZebraWarrior "Chick Pizz" - that's a terrible name. What were they thinking 🤔

OneMoreStepAlongTheRoadIGo · 17/10/2023 15:30

I am feeling like I've missed out on a whole "thing"!

When I was at uni I never heard mention of a chicken shop - but yes to the kebab van.

Where I live isn't posh but I haven't noticed a "chicken shop" but then maybe I just wasn't looking?!

I've literally never been aware of the saying. Or have friends who have suggested going to the chicken shop / have gone to the chicken shop etc! However we do have tons of fish and chips places so I get the idea.

People do go out/ get a "Chinese" or an "Indian" takeaway here so I am not adverse to the term - just not one I have come across until reading an article just now.

I have heard of KFC and Nandos!

I don't live in London - is it mainly a city thing? Anyone else not heard the term? How have I missed this reference!?

@DrMarshaFieldstone it was a reference to Chicken Shop Dates in an article that got me wondering what on earth they meant!

It's just occurred to me that perhaps it's meant to be pronounced like Chick Peas.

I'm going to have to ring them up and see how they answer the phone aren't I?

GigiAnnna · 17/10/2023 15:32

I have about 5 in walking range from my house (North west) but they aren't commonly known as a chicken shop. We just call it the takeaway. I think this is because excluding KFC they all serve kebabs, pizzas and burgers too.

IHeartGeneHunt · 17/10/2023 15:33

I miss London chicken shops.

Needmorelego · 17/10/2023 15:33

@RainbowZebraWarrior yes....you must ring and report back.

Normalsizedsalad · 17/10/2023 15:34

Where the heck do you live that you have no chicken shops? 😱

Spinet · 17/10/2023 15:34

Yeah it's a South London thing. Maybe a London thing. Round us they have Morley's chicken and then hilarious fake Morley's like Monley's Chicken. basically where all the kids go after school to fill up on rubbish.

QueenOfThorns · 17/10/2023 15:36

Ah, the legendary Miami Crispy!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 17/10/2023 15:36

We would never have eaten from one of those as kids because my mother didn't trust anyone but her not to give us salmonella. But I've never heard anyone else talk about the chicken shop either.

Why is KFC not a chicken shop?

bostonchamps · 17/10/2023 15:37

My DM had 'no idea' what a chicken shop was until I took her into one at 3am on my hen party and she mysteriously knew exactly what she wanted without looking at the menu HmmWink
