Chicken Shop...

Is this a common phrase where you live?

Is it literally a shop which sells chicken (like KFC? Nandos?)

Why not say KFC or are there lots of little indpendent shops?

I feel I've got to middle age without knowing this term...

@Spinet yeah there's always one you think is a Morelys but when you look properly at the sign it's actually called "M'relys" or something 😂
Oooh if I ever opened one up (I wouldn't....I don't eat chicken) I would call it "McMorelys" 😂😂🐔

ColonelSpondleClagnut · 17/10/2023 15:41

There's a Perfect Chicken in Hither Green. I like the idea of someone opening up an Adequate Chicken at Slightly Lower Prices in competition 😬

So I've had a bit of a google map moment and there are some - just not in my immediate area/ near places I usually go but they ARE on some of the streets with a billion shops I sometimes drive down and havent ever stopped in (so laundry/ pet shop/ chemist/haridresser/nails long strip type place on a main road)

So it isn't that there aren't any near me - just not immediately places I go.

Lol I've seen PFC, BFC, KKFC, Morleys, Sam's, Dixy, Carolina, Chicken cottage, Chicken Village so many. I don't even look at the names anymore just the window stickers for the best deals.

The Chicken Shop in the Louis Theroux episode is actually a Sam's near me in Harlesden which is really shitty for deals.

We would never have eaten from one of those as kids because my mother didn't trust anyone but her not to give us salmonella. But I've never heard anyone else talk about the chicken shop either.

Why is KFC not a chicken shop?

Not halal (usually - there are a few halal KFCs but not many), not independent, too big, usually closed by 11pm whereas chicken shops stay open into the small hours.

We have Ferfect Chicken in Forest Hill: the bulbs in the part of the ‘P’ which turned it from an ‘F’ kept failing, and it just became jokingly known locally as Ferfect until the owner actually installed an ‘F’ and renamed his shop.

Where I grew up in the 70s and 80s, KFC was called the "Kentucky Fried Chicken Shop". So they are the ones who started all this chicken shop stuff, even if they are now not chicken shops. Confused

Oldraver · 17/10/2023 15:58

I'd never heard the phrase until recently, but then our nearest KFC is 18 odd miles away. Though I think there are a couple of 'chicken shops' in a nearby town

KKFC is the best one😂

What is the extra K? The people need to know!!!!

AmIAutumnalNow · 17/10/2023 16:00

Only ever heard about these on tv or on here

We don't have them. We have a drive through KFC though

Screenskeen · 17/10/2023 17:17

BTW, KFC is cheaper than some of these fake shops. If you download the app they have really good deals.

@ComtesseDeSpair

Ferfect! A canny hooligan could also turn Perfect into Defect (almost) should they be so minded.

😆

Saverage · 17/10/2023 18:13

I'm in east London, lots of chicken shops, I recognise the names already mentioned. Chicken shops and bookies tend to go hand in hand here.

Fifthtimelucky · 17/10/2023 19:29

I'd never heard of them until recently, and I have never been to one (or even seen one).

I used to live in south London (Lewisham) for a while too, so either they didn't have them in those days (late 80s) or I just never noticed them!

Crunchymum · 17/10/2023 19:41

Yes, yes. North London and chicken shop is a common term. It encompasses every fried chicken establishment except for KFC, which is always KFC.
