What would you use a garden room for? There are no bad ideas!

We already have an office and although we both work from home, I’m pretty happy on the dining room table and laptop away at the end of the day…

If you had a garden room, what would you use it for? Looking for a unique idea I maybe haven’t thought of… or I fear our front runner is ‘Tik Tok Studio’ for my daughter 😂🫣

I want a pool table that can be a dining table in a garden room. Currently on the wish list because we’re going to have to replace the cars first.

I just viewed a house that had one of these. I thought it was amazing - DH said it was chavvy. We’re now getting divorced 🤣. I’ve dreamed of a pool table ever since my friend at school had one and her older brothers were dead cool and played it the whole time.

@Nellieinthebarn - a spell room? I’m a bit scared to ask what that is.

Nothing scary! I don't sacrifice virgins or anything. Calling it a spell room probably sounds much more interesting than it is. It's mostly some candle rituals/meditation and I do a bit of tarot. It's just nice to have a room that's mine that has a door I can shut. I hate my house, and this little room is the only place I feel at home.

A pool table that can be a dining table sounds awesome!

DH wants an outdoor pool table under a pergola but the reviews for them are so bad.

Yeah I can’t imagine the cloth does well in UK winters. My friends have table tennis in a similar set up and that seems to survive

I use my outbuildings for storage of garden tools, equipment and also have a separate laundry room.
I have converted my old garden shed into a garden room, and l use half of it it like a mini greenhouse as well as having a nice comfy chair and cushion to relax in the quiet and just enjoy a different view of the garden and watch the wildlife. I also have a cat flap and cat beds dotted around as l have four cats and if they want some space it's somewhere they can settle too.

My parents have one of those fun garden pergoda thingys and they have a heater and two chairs in it and a small bookcase. It’s so cosy! They have their lunch in it in the winter and read the paper (and my dad occasionally has a snooze).

Ours is an arcade so half full of dh collection of 80s arcade machines plus a sofa a big TV plus storage for games, consoles etc etc.

If dh weren't here I would get rid of it all and turn it into my art studio. My work is creative anyway so half would be a desk set up with all my digital drawing kit, computer, drawing board cutting mat, the other would have storage for art equipment and wool plus books and comfy arm chair. Would love to have space for a knitting group or similar that wouldn't wake the kids.

Theirs is a bit like this one. Like a fancy summer house.

@Sparehair to be fair, if we get one it’ll be going where the hot tub currently is so I think we own the chavy title already 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 it came with the house and we have really enjoyed it for relaxing in and getting away from screens with dc or just dh and I. After 6 years we’re using it less but would love to play pool together. Dh is an introvert so rather than go to the pub to play we can do it at home.

Yeah I think it gives teens something to do as well. I’d love a hot tub. Getting into them is just amazing.

GreyCarpet · 15/10/2023 19:16

I'd use it as a music room.

I mean, I'd like to. But I already have a summerhouse which is just a very pretty shed full of shed stuff 🤷🏻‍♀️

bigbadbarry · 15/10/2023 19:22

I use mine for an afternoon snooze where the rest of the family doesn’t think to look for me

Unfortun8 · 15/10/2023 19:24

Ours has a wicker sofa and a train set in for the grandkids

martinisforeveryone · 15/10/2023 19:28

I'd like one where the front opened up entirely and it was an outdoor kitchen, just a rudimentary one and summer living room for relaxing long evenings and weekends. In the winter bad weather it'd probably be crafts and storage.

rivercobbler · 15/10/2023 19:35

Sewing!

Saschka · 15/10/2023 19:36

We plan to put one in our garden when we have enough money. We will be getting power, wifi and aircon.

So:
Obviously we’ll get another 12m2 floor space
DH can wfh in an air conditioned room in summer
I can do Pilates/exercise in there at night without an audience
DS can head down there with his friends when he is older and I don’t need to monitor what they are up to
The design we are looking at has a separate storage room - plan to use this as a secure bike store (current wooden shed is not massively secure).

Crabward · 15/10/2023 19:41

Id have a fancy shed, with an arm chair and small library area, area to grow seedlings and start off plants, area for a sewing machine and all the threads etc that Id need - sigh, maybe one day!

ShutTheDoorBabe · 15/10/2023 20:05

It's less a room and more a shed but I sit with my cup of tea, listen to the radio and nap.

DrWu · 15/10/2023 20:16

Ours is a gym/craft room. One side has the treadmill, spin bike, PowerWave bags, the other side has a small table with a sewing machine with a big pot on for my crochet hooks & under the table & in shelving pod things around the walls I've got all of my fabric & yarn. It also houses a small two seater snuggler sofa, so it's a bit of everything, we love it.
