What would you use a garden room for? There are no bad ideas!

We already have an office and although we both work from home, I’m pretty happy on the dining room table and laptop away at the end of the day…

If you had a garden room, what would you use it for? Looking for a unique idea I maybe haven’t thought of… or I fear our front runner is ‘Tik Tok Studio’ for my daughter 😂🫣

Do you mean a fancy shed in the garden?

I'd turn it into a studio. Your daughter could use it for Tik Tok stuff but it would also be available for anyone else to use for activities that might drive other family members nuts. Gigantic jigsaw puzzles, sewing (which leaves thread all over the place and requires a lot of room for pattern/fabric-cutting), painting, writing, and so on.

Could be a great den for your daughter and her friends if/when she is a teen so you get to keep the house quiet!

Jessforless · 15/10/2023 17:49

Like a garden pod, with glass doors and internally plastered with power and heating.

Im trying to discourage the Tik Tok 😂 but a craft room sounds nice actually.

Teenage den. Sorry - that probably is a tiktok studio

SisterMichaelsHabit · 15/10/2023 17:52

Do you mean you already have one in your garden that no one has a use for and you're trying to stop your daughter putting it to the use she's thought of for it? Or that you're thinking of building something you have no real use for, in which case just don't build it!

I'd just let her have the TikTok studio, but I'm struggling to conceive of having a room I had no use for! If I had a spare room it'd be a library-cum-yoga studio.

Antst · 15/10/2023 17:52

@Jessforless, the fabric and yarn would make a unique Tik Tok back drop!

I wish I had something like your pod. I find I can only write when I'm not in my usual office or on the sofa. In fact, that's what I should be doing right now. I think it's a nice idea to have a spot where people can go to do what they want to focus on.

You could get into Tik Tok too! I might if I had a place to make videos where other people wouldn't be pointing and laughing!

Pet bedroom, drying washing, sitting out when the sun's shining but cold wind. Our conservatory does all 3 and I love it

CesareBorgia · 15/10/2023 17:56

I'd use it to paint in (oils/acrylics).

We have an outbuilding that my DH wants to either tear it down or turn into a nice garden room, he thinks it will add value and look a lot nicer than what is there now. We’ve had a quote that we’re happy with but just trying to think what we could actually use it for. The initial idea was to make me an office as DH already has one but I don’t feel like I need one, I think if it was an office I would never use it.

Years ago a library would have been my absolute dream but we had a decluttering frenzy during covid and donated all our books and the whole family went E reader. I’m still a bit sad about it 😂

I could tell you amazing things I'd do with it but in reality it would be filled with clothes horses and a dehumidifier.

BristolBlueGlasses · 15/10/2023 18:04

Could you put a sofa and a table in it but make it a blank canvas and let the whole family use it for whatever they see fit?

You could even start a new library that you fill with books you find in charity shops, then chill out on the sofa with a good book away from all other distractions/jobs.

This sounds nuts, frankly.

Jessforless · 15/10/2023 18:10

Why nuts? It’s a really ugly building that has no use other than junk storage but good bones and foundations…

I have what the estate agent called a garden room, its basically a small room off the kitchen where one wall is a large patio door, not a garden pod. I use mine as a sewing/craft room, a writing room and a spell room. I have two shelf units, a multi-drawer thingy, and a big table.

bellac11 · 15/10/2023 18:11

Airbnb.

Obvs!

AbacusAvocado · 15/10/2023 18:12

@Nellieinthebarn - a spell room? I’m a bit scared to ask what that is.

NancyJoan · 15/10/2023 18:13

I would love a study/office of my own, so I’d use it for that.

AbacusAvocado · 15/10/2023 18:13

We use ours as a home gym. Also to hide Christmas presents in.

DramaAlpaca · 15/10/2023 18:14

My friend has a fitness studio/gym in hers.

RaininSummer · 15/10/2023 18:15

I would use it to enjoy the garden on slightly miserable days sitting in a rocking chair with my crochet like the granny I apparently am.

TomatoSandwiches · 15/10/2023 18:15

Painting/craft room or learning the drums.

Sparehair · 15/10/2023 18:16

Sauna

Jessforless · 15/10/2023 18:16

I know that’s probably the most useful use for it, but I don’t have a monitor or files or require anything other than a laptop, I like working on the dining table or even on the sofa, so to me would feel like a waste and would prefer to do something with it that feels like it would benefit us as a family.

My daughter has now jumped on the craft room idea and is googling cricuts 😂

I want a pool table that can be a dining table in a garden room. Currently on the wish list because we’re going to have to replace the cars first.
