Waitrose delivery - how do you unpack

falalalalal · 14/10/2023 10:19

I always unpack at the door and I've usually got about 3 trays delivered. The delivery person removes each tray as it's unpacked.

I've realised that I'm ending up on my knees at my front door unpacking the bottom tray.

How do others do it? ( I don't want them to come in to my house so prefer doorstep delivery...but not on my knees!)

ThanksTalksTooMuch...Ouch - a ruined Christmas delivery doesn't sound good.

'Twas not... We were living overseas at the time... flew home on 23rd with 3 small kids and had booked a holiday home in UK... my parents were driving a good two hours to join us for the week and other family members joining us on Boxing Day for a buffet type thing... masses of food and booze order... lots of pre prepped things... Waitrose had some kind of computer error and order eventually arrived about midnight on 23rd missing approx 75% of stuff...

We had already made a trip to nearby mini market for basics when we knew it was delayed, but ended up doing what we tried to avoid and doing massive Christmas Eve shop for almost everything... never again....

Dh puts it all in individual bags/crates/cool bags as he takes each item carefully from the crate and then puts it away.
I take each tray into the kitchen and empty it's contents onto the floor until we're done. Then I ask bribe dc to help me put it away.
Prefer my way tbh!

I unpack at the door and the drivers always remove the top tray while unpack the second tray and they put a tray under the bottom tray. Different drivers always do this. Maybe I’m lucky 🤷‍♀️

I’m going to ask my Tesco delivery driver tomorrow if I am a rarity in asking them to take crates into my kitchen - seems like most Mumsnet posters unpack at the door.

Mine take mine into the kitchen too. I couldn't be bothered faffing about on the doorstep

I’ve got a delivery coming from Waitrose this morning. I will pick up each crate from the front door, walk to kitchen, decant onto kitchen floor or side and take crate back to driver. If it’s full of heavy stuff like cat litter I take those things out and leave at the door to lug to the utility room at my leisure. It takes a couple of mins.

I genuinely have put no thought into having a system for this at all. I think if you struggle with bending down or carrying the crates you should ask for help. Also I don’t see why a supermarket delivery driver is going to have especially muddy boots. And finally if helping you with the crates takes 5 mins instead of 3, I don’t think you should feel bad for how much time you’re taking up.

Don't have Waitrose in Ireland. Over here our Tesco delivery drivers seem to just follow through into the kitchen of their own volition 😆 maybe they are being helpful, maybe they just want a nose 🤷‍♂️

Do people tip delivery drivers? I didn't realise it was even a thing.

Fridaysgirl17 · 15/10/2023 08:44

I've been getting mine delivered since COVID, I'm in Ireland so just Tesco or Dunnes but usually Tesco, I generally get the same drivers each week & they pop in one crate with just a few bits in it, I empty into a big bag or throw in the hall if bulky eg toilet paper, cans, & they leave that one & build up, I usually have 4/5 crates,& I chat away as I empty them, the only reason I don't get them brought in to the kitchen is my 3 year old would escape through the door & quite possibly trip the driver & it literally takes me like 3 steps from door to kitchen, it's quicker to just pop into a big bag & do it myself

It's why I continue to use Ocado, having tried alternatives.
Bagged shopping. Empty and store. Return bags for recycling the next week.

My friend has had a life changing accident which has affected her mobility hugely. She was. Finding the online grocery shop difficult sue to the bag less crates and I recommended Ocado and she's used them ever since.

I dread the day Ocado ever decide to go that way.

I also sometimes use Morrisons via Amazon - delivery in brown card bags, so again easier than bagels, disadvantage - no handles to the bags.

It’s hardly civilised to waste the world’s resources with unnecessary plastic bags. I don’t care if the the bags are recycled, they don’t need to be manufactured in the first place

It's also not civilised to have people with mobility issues trying to unpack crates of loose shopping at the doorway, or even in the kitchen, whilst a delivery person hangs about waiting for you. Especially when mobility issues already slow you down.

We managed for years with paper carrier bags. Can we have them back?

I have some problems with unpacking, I cannot stand up for very long, I use a wheeled walker to get around the house and have bad arthritis in my hands. Tesco drivers bring the crates into the kitchen and will unpack them if necessary. I always work alongside the driver doing as much unpacking as I can but often they tell me to sit down and let them do it.

We chat quite easily as we unpack and the drivers don’t appear in a hurry which surprises me as I have never had a delayed delivery, sometimes they phone to see if they can come early, so they must be allocated plenty of time.

Once the driver leaves, I use a square plastic crate on wheels to move items from worktop to fridge, freezer and cupboards at a leisurely pace.

Maybe those of you who struggle to unpack at the door should try a different supermarket?

Newestname002 · 16/10/2023 02:38

The driver holds the crates up for me and I pack into strong carrier bags which I then unpack in my kitchen. The driver holds each crate up for me and I help him by taking the heavier items first to lighten the load. 🌹

newnamethanks · 16/10/2023 14:45

I just want to add that Waitrose delivered to me throughout pandemic, and since, and have always unpacked crates into bags for me without complaint. They are a great bunch of people and extremely helpful.

IDriveMySupernova · 16/10/2023 15:36

@newnamethanks agreed. Sometimes, if I say I don't want a sub, they let me have it anyway as a gift. Generally the subs are very good (and cost the same) and sometimes you get a win, like a couple of weeks ago when the 75 cl bottles of tanqueray were sold out so they brought me a 1 ltr bottle Shock. Or the time I ordered two little tiramisu but they brought me a big family-sized one instead.
