Waitrose delivery - how do you unpack

falalalalal · 14/10/2023 10:19

I always unpack at the door and I've usually got about 3 trays delivered. The delivery person removes each tray as it's unpacked.

I've realised that I'm ending up on my knees at my front door unpacking the bottom tray.

How do others do it? ( I don't want them to come in to my house so prefer doorstep delivery...but not on my knees!)

Not sure if it is my advanced age and decrepitude but the Waitrose delivery man is always helpful and as I unpack the top box into my waiting bags/boxes he removes it and lifts the next one for me - down to the bottom one.
It has to be done on the front step because the dog is standing sentry behind the kitchen door and would rush out if I went in there.

Just ask them to pickup the last box- all part of the service unless it is just that my local delivery men are more helpful.

We have Asda and we put 2 large plastic storage type boxes outside the front door and the delivery person puts the stuff from his boxes into our boxes.

Then he takes his empty boxes back to his truck and we bring our full boxes into the house

🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

Maybe it’s just me but if feels somewhat distasteful to consider someone only good enough to make a delivery to you, not good enough to step inside your house, especially when their doing so would solve a problem for you. Very upstairs downstairs.

brassbells · 14/10/2023 15:42

btw They do offer to carry our full boxes into the house but we feel it is delaying them from their next delivery not a servant/master thing at all we just know they are rushed off their feet with traffic jams around here

It isn't distatsteful to not want someone with dirty shoes tramp over your hall carpet.

Surely that’s what doormats are for?

I would not expect a supermarket delivery person’s shoes to be any dirtier than my own when I come home from work. I also wouldn’t carpet a hall, to be honest. We don’t wear shoes in sitting room or upstairs, but I hate it when people who come in (eg parents collecting a child from a play date) insist on taking off their shoes for hall and kitchen. But I guess if you are the kind of person who takes their own shoes off at the threshold then you have to accept that will mean you have to unpack your shopping at the door. (Which I am sure you do, @RampantIvy , not aimed at you).

stopringingme · 14/10/2023 16:41

Always empty at the door, I have the bags ready.

The drivers have the crates stacked.

I empty the first and second then usually the delivery driver holds the third one or puts it on top of the empty ones.

And repeat if there is more than three crates.

I have never had to get on my knees on my doorstep.

hermioneee · 14/10/2023 16:45

I don't get this. Just ask the delivery driver to lift it up for you OR put the crate underneath so you don't have to bend down. Perhaps the driver didn't realise it was bothering you. Just ask for help!

FinallyHere · 14/10/2023 17:40

As I said - I don't want them coming in to the house.

We all see things differently. I would love to understand why you don't want them in the house.

Our delivery people seem to be happy to bring the crates into the kitchen (which is close to the front door) and on my direction put them on the work surfaces, empty everything out of crates onto work surfaces.

I then put everything away.

Hard surfaces between the front door and kitchen do in the event of mud id soon wipe any dirt away with a mop.

Simples.

So for all of you who don’t want your grocery delivery taken into the house ( the majority I think), what do you do with other deliveries? Over the past few months I’ve had a new fridge, a large rug and a mattress delivered
( three different firms) and the goods were taken to the rooms where they were intended. Do you also get them left at the front door or do you ask the delivery people to take their boots off?

I keep my house clean and tidy but I’m not precious about things, carpets and floors are intended to be walked on and can be cleaned if necessary. I don’t ask people to take their shoes off and if they ask, I tell them not to bother although some people take them off without asking. I don’t really like to see shoes lined up in my hallway!

The reason that I don't generally have my supermarket deliveries brought into the house is my pets who can be a trip hazard 😁I'm used to them and keep an eye out without thinking. Newcomers are less practised.

Sometimes the delivery person pops in to meet them and have a chat, if they're interested. I'm definitely not fussy who comes in.

verabarbleen · 14/10/2023 20:03

Unpack in a frenzy at the front door while my toddlers take everything and my cat jumps in and out the door over the shopping 😂 apologising to the driver because I'm talking so long and saying wasn't it easier when we had bags! And also saying wow you don't get much for your money do you while they agree with me 🙈although I get Tesco or asda . One day it will be Waitrose!!!

Theoldcuriosityshop · 14/10/2023 20:27

Mine come already in bags. I hand back the previous bags and get 10p back per bag. This is Morrisons by the way.

RoseAndRose · 14/10/2023 20:27

I take a big IKEA bag to the front door and ask delivery driver to decant one or more tray into that, whilst I take another crate in and empty it in the kitchen, repeating as necessary, and with more bags at the doorstep if needed

Waitrose stopped using bags a while back.

I applaud their stance, but it's a faff.

MagpieCastle · 14/10/2023 20:36

A lot of our Waitrose delivery drivers either angle up the final box so it's easier to unpack or lift it to waist height (if not heavy stuff). They’re usually really helpful.

User1748953 · 14/10/2023 20:36

Fortunately DH is usually in and receives the Tesco shopping, I have no idea if he is on his knees or not but I know he uses Ikea bags.

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 14/10/2023 21:01

TeaAndStrumpets · 14/10/2023 14:04

We have our own plastic crates (v. lightweight) which we take to the front door ready for the delivery, then DH and the delivery chap transfer the groceries into them. We do have a little trolley to wheel them into the kitchen, which I use if I'm by myself, but generally DH lifts them up and carries them in one by one. I didn't know we could borrow crates from Waitrose.

I can't speak for Waitrose as it's Tesco I use...gave up on Waitrose after a disastrous Christmas delivery one year...

TeaAndStrumpets · 14/10/2023 21:04

ThanksTalksTooMuch...Ouch - a ruined Christmas delivery doesn't sound good.

notthe1Parrot · 14/10/2023 21:12

Further to my post upthread, Tesco delivery drivers also unpack everything into my crates (the size of laundry baskets) which are already waiting near the doorstep. They have never asked me to unpack, so I have never had to. I'm sure they're much faster at unpacking than I would be. Less than 3 minutes from knocking at the door to getting back in the van.

MCOut · 14/10/2023 21:32

I just bend down and grab an arm load and take them inside and repeat until they’re all inside. They’re usually very lovely and patient and always reassure me that they’re happy to wait. I do prefer how Ocado do it though. Maybe you can buy some bags and take them to the doorstep with you?

HideTheCroissants · 14/10/2023 22:23

DisplayPurposesOnly · 14/10/2023 10:22

I carry the box thru to my kitchen & unpack on to work top or directly into cupboard or freezer. Rinse and repeat until all boxes emptied.

^this

During the pandemic when we couldn’t touch the crates I unloaded into my washing baskets and the took to the kitchen.

LouOrange · 14/10/2023 22:25

On the door step into bags as I’ve usually dogs and children in the kitchen.

IDriveMySupernova · 14/10/2023 22:29

I have bags ready at the door. I transfer the groceries from crate to bags while DCat supervises and Driver admires DCat. We make awkward small talk, I thank them and then say goodbye.
