What time do your secondary age children walk in the door from school?

Assuming no clubs/deviating into town/to a mates house.

If they finish school and just walk or get the bus or train home, how long does that take?

Ds1 gets in just before 5pm. There's a 45min wait for the bus and a 50min bus ride. He's OK with it as the stop is just over the road from home but I do wonder sometimes if there is a better way. Technically I could find an hour to go pick him up and drop him back before I carry on. It's not ideal though and would ruin his cred with his mates. He's 13 in Year 8.

son is y7, they finish at 4pm and he walks in the door at 4:30 after a bus ride.

Tessisme · 12/10/2023 13:37

DS1 finishes school at 3.25 and gets in about 4.05. He gets a dedicated school bus to and from school. It's a 15 minute journey, so I imagine he spends the other 25 minutes waiting for the bus.

Billyhargrovesmullet · 12/10/2023 13:38

About 3.45, they get the bus from school which is around 3 miles away

Dc finish at 3.10 and get in at 3.20, we’re lucky!

LittleGreenDuck · 12/10/2023 13:40

Finish at 2.40, home by 3pm.

Plasmodesmata · 12/10/2023 13:40

About 4.30. school finishes 3.30 then he has a walk to bus stop (not school bus), wait for bus then short walk once off bus.

Cedar13 · 12/10/2023 13:40

Last lesson finishes at 2.50, he gets home between 3.15 and 5pm depending on whether he goes to the park with friends or not. We live a 10-15 min walk from school.
He's year 8.

TokyoSushi · 12/10/2023 13:41

Y8 DS finishes at 2:50pm, can be home as quickly as 3pm if he comes straight home on his bike!

icallitasplodge · 12/10/2023 13:42

About 3.50? He walks almost 2 miles to school (could get a bus but hates it) which I think is reasonable - and is the average when I googled it - but my sister in law seems to think that’s outrageous and drives hers instead.

Magicisuponus · 12/10/2023 13:43

School finishes at 3:10, and it’s a 7 min walk - we live very close to their school!

Mum2aTeen · 12/10/2023 13:43

I pick him up as he is in a SEN unit, so 3:10 (a parent or caregiver has to pick up the SEN kids/teens)
If he caught a bus anytime from 3:45-4:15.
My son is 14, and in year 8, our school time is 9 -3:10pm.

Panicmode1 · 12/10/2023 13:43

About 3 minutes after they finish...we are on the same road as the school!

twistyizzy · 12/10/2023 13:44

Yr 7 finishes school 5.15 and gets home 5.45 after a 30 min bus ride.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 12/10/2023 13:44

DC2 - 15.20 if she comes straight home, which she only ever does on Fridays when she needs to go straight back out again. Usually she goes the long way round and chats with her mates, coming in about 15.50. DC1 has just started sixth form across town so isn't back until 17.15.

morellamalessdrama · 12/10/2023 13:45

DSs finish at 3:15 and are home by 3:30.

We live a ten minute walk from the school and it was a big factor on where we chose to live - appreciate that isn't possible for everyone though.

wildwestpioneer · 12/10/2023 13:45

Year 11, walks in the door at 4.05. Leaves school at 3.25

Parker231 · 12/10/2023 13:45

DT’s have left school now but they had mandatory homework class after school and usually a sports event or music class. They got the Tube home from school and usually got home by 6pm.

BananaSlug · 12/10/2023 13:46

Finish at 3pm but I collect him as he is autistic and isn’t confident travelling alone yet.

curaçao · 12/10/2023 13:47

Finish at 4 , home 4.45 ish

hedgehoglurker · 12/10/2023 13:47

Finish at 3. Home at 3:15. Rural 5 mile school bus journey, we are closest stop.

CloudWhisperer · 12/10/2023 13:49

Would finish at 3pm walk home and be in the door at 3.30pm.

There is a homework club for all year groups where they can go and get some work done and I know Ds would have gone there rather than hanging around doing nothing productive for 45 minutes.

Why does it ruin his imagined street cred with his mates if he is picked up? Most children at Ds's school would love the luxury instead of walking or getting the bus.

EmmaStone · 12/10/2023 13:49

Finishes around 4, has to usually hang around for me to finish work, takes about 45 mins to get home from then (no buses available, live rurally). Usually home by 6:30.

GoodnightJude1 · 12/10/2023 13:50

DD15 and DS13 finish at 3.15pm and get the school bus which drops them at the end of our road at 4pm

SmallestInTheClass · 12/10/2023 13:54

Also Y8. School ends at 3:10pm and gets home about 4pm if no after school activities and nearer 5pm otherwise. It's a 40 minute walk or a bus ride and with the wait for the bus and a short walk from the stop it takes about the same time either way.

FunnysInLaJardin · 12/10/2023 13:55

DS2 generally gets home with us at about 5pm and is in year 9.

After school he has a choice of bus and walking 30 minutes home or coming to one of our workplaces and coming home with us. We both finish at around 4pm.

He usually chooses the latter!
