What time do your secondary age children walk in the door from school?

Assuming no clubs/deviating into town/to a mates house.

If they finish school and just walk or get the bus or train home, how long does that take?

Ds1 gets in just before 5pm. There's a 45min wait for the bus and a 50min bus ride. He's OK with it as the stop is just over the road from home but I do wonder sometimes if there is a better way. Technically I could find an hour to go pick him up and drop him back before I carry on. It's not ideal though and would ruin his cred with his mates. He's 13 in Year 8.

Dd is about a 10 min walk so can be home by 3.35. 5 is late and wouldn't be an option for us due to extra curriculars but if he's happy with it I don't see the issue

What do your teens who are home around 3pm do after getting home ? I found 3:15 very early for primary school finish and made sure we went to the park/ did an activity after school every day except Friday. DCs were home around 5pm from secondary school, which fits in well with the end of the working day. Up at 6:30 out the door at 7:15.

Mines 12 and year 8. They've just shortened the day so finish at 2.30, home for 3. Today he dog sat for the neighbour for a couple of hours. There's a local club type thing for teens a couple of times a week from 6-8 he occasionally goes to. The rest of the time seems to be online gaming with friends, watching YouTube, chatting on the phone (recent) or playing table tennis against the wall at home 🙄

Y9 DS, somewhere between 8.30pm and 9pm. He texts me to go and get him when he's had enough for the day. They would throw him out at 10ish when the boarders go to bed, but he's never actually stayed that late.

4.30-4.45 depending if the bus is on time

sunshineandshowers40 · 12/10/2023 18:05

Home by 3:15/3;30pm

Tarkan · 12/10/2023 18:10

School finishes at 3.50, DC get home at 4ish as we're only around a 10 minute walk but it depends on whereabouts in the school the last class was and if they're waiting for friends to walk with etc.

Friday is a half day so they finish at 1.20 and get home around half past approx.

SharpieElephant · 12/10/2023 19:08

Y8 dc finishes school at 3.30, home by 3.45.
Y12 dc finishes school at 3.05, home by 3.30ish.

My dc would be super happy to be picked up and wouldn't feel their street cred had been ruined at all! 😆

Year 7 DS here. He finishes at 2.55pm and walks home. If he doesn't mess about on his phone and just powers back home, it takes him 18 minutes, so just before 3.15pm.

Usually he's faffing about chatting or walking out of his way with friends so he can get in as late at 3.45pm.

Begonias · 12/10/2023 19:24

Yr 7 DD- school finishes at 15.40,catches bus at 16.00 home for 16.50

Yr11 DD different school- finishes at 14.55 home for 15.05

approaching40 · 12/10/2023 19:27

Finish at 3.10, home latest 3.45

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/10/2023 20:09

I used to finish at half three and walk back in around twenty five past four - twenty to five. It was a twenty minute walk, but I'd been well advised by my older brother that if you always took longer to get home than it technically took, you'd have around half an hour or so to yourself every afternoon, as she wouldn't know any different. When I was eventually questioned about the time (thanks, girl that lived opposite, could have done without her seeing you come home before me!), I said I walked a different route with friends for safety because the quickest route involved walking through a park or deserted back roads with alleyways, which we didn't like doing in winter.

He felt sorry for me because I didn't have the excuse of a bus or two not turning up because she decided I wasn't going anywhere I had to catch one - what she didn't know is that he was playing football and suchlike with his mates for at least an hour of his 'travelling time' every day.

xyzandabc · 12/10/2023 20:12

2 of them about 4.50pm if I pick them up from the bus stop or 5.15pm if they walk.

1 of them (different school) 3.05pm three days a week, 4pm two days a week. Different finish times depending on the day of the week. Not extra curriculars, school actually finishes at different times.

CowboyJoanna · 12/10/2023 20:14

DD finishes school at 3.15, she gets a public transport bus home because she hates the smelly school bus. Normally she's home about 4-ish.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/10/2023 20:19

DS Y10 High School. Finishes at 3pm, bus at 3.15, home at 3.30.

DD Y7 Middle School. Finishes 3.40 pm, 5 mins walk home

pennyfest · 12/10/2023 20:26

Around 3.20-3.30. They finish at 3pm, one walks faster than the other.

BrightlyCloudedSky · 12/10/2023 20:36

Yr7
Monday morning finishes 1140, bus, home by 12. Takes bus after lunch at 1pm, afternoon school starts at 1.45. School finishes 3.20, gets bus and is home at 4pm.

Tuesday morning finishes 1140, bus, home by 12. Every other week is afternoon free. The other week takes bus after lunch at 1pm, finishes 3.20 home at 4.

Wednesday morning finishes 1140, bus, home by 12. No afternoon school.

Thursday morning finishes 1140, bus, home by 12. Takes bus after lunch at 1pm. Finishes at 5.10, bus and home by 5.30 or 6 if he misses it.

Friday same as Monday.

(leaves at 650 in the mornings, lessons start at 720)

That sounds quite sad, I'm assuming controlling parents because I don't think it's the norm to lie about how long it takes you so you can have half an hour to yourself every day . Or to feel you need that half an hour every day either

MentalLoadOverload · 12/10/2023 21:04

Finish at 4, could be home by 4.30, but most days it’s 5.30 or later due to after school activities and/or dawdling and chatting with mates. Sounds like your son is enjoying the extra social time, I wouldn’t worry about it.

TriceratopsRocks · 12/10/2023 21:10

Mine used to finish at 3.30pm, catch bus at 3.45pm and be home about 4.40pm. That's on the days they didn't have activities. Depending on the school they attended, kids in our village arrived home anytime between 3.30pm and 5.15pm.

spacechimp79 · 12/10/2023 21:14

My DS finishes at 3.45pm and gets the bus home. Normally walks in the door 4.25pm.

fridaynight1 · 12/10/2023 21:17

It was a 5 minute walk for mine. The finish bell went a 3.05 and they were always home before 3.15

Housefullofcatsandkids · 12/10/2023 21:19

My eldest used to leave at 7am and get home at 5:30. Finished school at 3:40 and took two buses home.
My journey to and from school was the same and I quite enjoyed it.

consideringachange · 12/10/2023 21:26

My eldest is in year 7. He finishes at 5.05 and gets back about 5.30/5.40 - it's about a 20 minute walk/scoot but I think he hangs around chatting a bit first. We're in France though -- much longer school day! (He starts at 8.30 but has a half day on Wednesday.)

CeeJay81 · 12/10/2023 21:33

About 3.50ish for.my year 10. School is a 20 minute walk.
