What time do your secondary age children walk in the door from school?

Assuming no clubs/deviating into town/to a mates house.

If they finish school and just walk or get the bus or train home, how long does that take?

Ds1 gets in just before 5pm. There's a 45min wait for the bus and a 50min bus ride. He's OK with it as the stop is just over the road from home but I do wonder sometimes if there is a better way. Technically I could find an hour to go pick him up and drop him back before I carry on. It's not ideal though and would ruin his cred with his mates. He's 13 in Year 8.

oh and school finishes at 2.50pm

CMOTDibbler · 12/10/2023 13:59

Finishes 3.30, in the door at 3.50 after cycling home the 2 miles

Youthinkthatsbad · 12/10/2023 14:00

3.35pm. School finishes at 3.30pm. We live right next to it though!

OP can your son stay at school for most of the 45 minute wait for the bus and do his homework ? If so then I don’t think the journey sounds like a problem as he gets free time once he’s home

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 12/10/2023 14:01

Anywhere between 2-6.30pm

MoFoFlo · 12/10/2023 14:02

DD2 in Y7 finishes at 2.45, home by 3.05 if she walks straight home quickly, but usually waits for a friend, stands around for a bit of a chat and dawdles home. She’s often got a club or goes to the library to do homework (or just hang out with friends).

DD1 is in sixth form college and very annoyed that her timetable means she’s in for the last period every day, so a 4pm finish. Back in the house anytime 4.30 - 5pm depending on how busy the busses are and traffic.

TrumpetOfTheMatriarchy · 12/10/2023 14:03

Ds 1 and 2 cycle to school and it is around ten minutes from door to door. They are usually home before I return with ds3 from primary pick up 2 mins across the rd.

Plinkplonkplinkplonk123 · 12/10/2023 14:04

Finish at 250 home at 320 on bus or 340 if walking.

lavenderlou · 12/10/2023 14:04

Finishes at 3. Gets in at 3.40 after a short walk and bus ride.

butterflycatcher · 12/10/2023 14:05

I don't have secondary school aged children but am quite surprised to see such early finish times. School ended at 3:40 when I was in secondary. How come the pre-3pm finishes, what time does the day start? We are fortunate to live 5 minutes walk from the local secondary school, let's hope they can get in 😂(it's grammar).

horseymum · 12/10/2023 14:08

Three short days, in the door 3pm, two long, in at 4. That's a long day with a lot of dead time. Unless he enjoys spending it with friends or doing homework.

Fireisland · 12/10/2023 14:08

Finishes 3:35, bus home, in about 4:15.

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 12/10/2023 14:08

Finish at 3.20, walks/dawdles, home by 3.35pm.

We chose where we live to lose the least amount of time to commuting (work and school). We've compromised hugely on space, in favour of time.

Invisablepanic · 12/10/2023 14:17

Ds Y7 finishes at 3.45, dependant on traffic he's home for about 4.45, unless he has an after school club in which case it's closer to 6. I do feel a bit guilty he has such a long day, we live down the road from the high school most of his friends went to, they finish much earlier, he'd probably be home by 3 if he'd gone there.

He's tired by Fridays but I tell myself if he was home earlier he would just spend longer gaming, or arguing about gaming. He gets longer holidays to make up for the longer days though.

mindutopia · 12/10/2023 14:58

Mine is still in Y6, but the bus from secondary school that she'll take passes our house every day at about 3:35pm (before I even get home from the school run picking her up from primary). School is in a town about 10 minutes away, so with stops (15-20 minutes). I assume they leave at 315pm which just seems awfully early!

morellamalessdrama · 12/10/2023 15:04

Some of these examples are longer days that my full time work hours. Really surprised by that. I would have been exhausted with that as a child but perhaps they all get used to it.

Desecratedcoconut · 12/10/2023 15:05

It's a 20 minute walk.

punnetofcherries · 12/10/2023 15:06

Mine were lucky as no bus ride however they finished at 1630 and walked home by 5pm

cocksstrideintheevening · 12/10/2023 15:07

15.25, they finish at 15.00. Bus or walk home, Takes about the same amount of time when you factor in waiting for the bus.

I agree! Some schools finish so early! My boys don't finish until 1630 and that's before school activities have even started!
They also start at 0825

Jules912 · 12/10/2023 15:13

Finishes 3.30 and home around 4. In theory it's a 20 minute walk but he walks with friends so goes a slightly longer way (and I suspects dawdles for a chat a bit). I only looked at schools that were within half an hour (either bus or walking) as didn't want him to have a long commute, but fortunately we're spoilt for choice with good schools where I am.

elliejjtiny · 12/10/2023 15:16

Finish at 3:15 and home by 4pm. On the days when he does exta lessons after school it's an hour later.

ShinyBandana · 12/10/2023 15:18

DS is 15 , school finishes at 3.20 he walks 1 mile to station, gets 2 trains and walks another mile home to get back at 4.45. He leaves at 7.15am in the morning but has never complained. He’s as fit as a fiddle with all the walking too, 😝

PuttingDownRoots · 12/10/2023 15:25

As early as 2.50. School finishes 2.45. We live 4 minutes walk away.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/10/2023 15:26

School starts at 8.30. They have 5 1hr lessons a day.
