Sunday Lunch - What’s Missing?

HostieForARoastie · 11/10/2023 14:03

I’ve for 6 coming for Sunday lunch. No vegetarians. Doing roast chicken as I know I cook a blinding one. Broccoli is delicious but has no place on a roast IMHO, however one of my guests has a weakness for it with chicken so, absolutely, I’m serving it. Same with Yorkshires - I’m not a fan but I know others are, so Yorkies it is. Two types of potatoes because we are Irish and it’s the Irish Law.

To be clear, all of the below is being served and will be (to use the MN term) ‘cooked from scratch’. What I’m looking for is: Anything Missing?

Roast chicken (with lemon rind, thyme, pancetta mixed with butter and stuffed under the skin)
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing (chestnut based)
Cauliflower cheese
Red cabbage
Roasted carrots (& boiled carrots in case they become blacker than my soul)
Roasted parsnips
Roast potatoes
Mashed potatoes
Yorkshires
Runner beans
Broccoli
Peas (and maybe sprouts)
Gravy
Bread sauce (maaaaaaybe)

Pudding will be a Blackberry Pavlova with all the creams / ice creams etc.

I want my guests to be more than replete at the end; I want them reminiscent of a landed, red cheeked and rounded bodied Georgian countryman tasting the bounty of his green and pleasant fields, whose breaches burst as as he reaches for the port. Human and modern day Toby Jugs if you like. To speak of this meal in tones of awe and glory (I’ll be giving them enough booze to ensure this) and to have enough left over to feed us for an evening of picking days.

What have I forgotten?

Any self respecting Georgian would have a suet pudding with the main, delicious with gravy.

@ImCamembertTheBigCheese Yeah, I’m sorry you’d hate that. But fortunately there’ll be lots of choice and people can pick and choose. I’m not a fan of Yorkies. Still serving them.

Edited

I get it but dissaprove 😁 Chestnuts spoil any dish so would not eat stuffing but you have so many other dishes, I would not miss it.

Sage and onion stuffing.

I love roasted sweet potatoes with chicken.

HostieForARoastie · 11/10/2023 22:55

I’d stretch to 2 stuffings but fear my mental health may implode! Maybe I’ll do a pork based stuffing (but not sage. Not with chicken. Maybe chicken liver, lemon, pork and thyme) and then roast chestnuts with the parsnips. But my god, if I remember those conkery fuckers come 12.25 Sunday, I’m gonna be putting myself up for Masterchef.

That sounds lush. I know you said you're done now, but roast beetroot with rosemary and rock salt goes really well with chicken. Reading this has made me hungry.

msmatcha · 11/10/2023 22:57

Oh this all sounds fabulous. I'd agree with the savoy cabbage. And a luxury to have two types of potatoes.

Do you plate up or serve buffet style? I have an urge to have guests for a big roast now. Are the guests bringing pudding?

Okki · 11/10/2023 22:57

And can I just say, I would absolutely love your menu - I always find people don't do enough veg with a roast.

HostieForARoastie · 11/10/2023 23:00

@ImCamembertTheBigCheese that stuffing was for you!

@LunaNorth not round my gaff. Too reminiscent of Nando’s (of which I am not a fan).

A starter you pick at is canapés and not ideal unless your guests are post some form of hearty exercise. The best starters (IMO) are teeny and tasty but really unsatisfying, then a ten minute pause so everyone gets a bit ravenous. I personally wouldn’t have anything cheesy with a roast chicken, but I can see @HostieForARoastie is trying to please a silly guest. What are you drinking with each course and will there be good coffee at the end?

Cauliflower cheese with a roast is not silly, damn your eyes!

HostieForARoastie · 11/10/2023 23:05

@msmatcha you’re very kind! All served in tureens, platters etc on the centre of the table. Not ‘buffet’ but help yourself / pass to the left!

I’m doing puddings. It’s just a roast with guests for me. An ‘advance warning’ Christmas for friends. I love to cook and have the opportunity to prep tomorrow, Friday and Saturday.

@Okki i totally agree! It’s why I do such a variety. Make it your own. Get yours!

Ooohhh, enjoy, if you forget things, no one will know!! Have fun. Sounds awesome

Therealjudgejudy · 11/10/2023 23:23

Sounds totally amazing.

I also agree with a pp, i love mint sauce on any roast dinner...and tonnes of gravy!

00100001 · 11/10/2023 23:27

Who needs 7 types of veg???

HostieForARoastie · 11/10/2023 23:53

@Pinkpinkplonk and @Therealjudgejudy thank you both! And you’re both spot on - the right atmosphere, and confinement make everything go with a bang! I’ll do my best and my guests the same and we’ll have fun regardless of the inevitable disaster! There will be at least one burnt offering!

@00100001 my guests. I like to offer choice. Who needs 3 question marks?

OP posts:
HostieForARoastie · 12/10/2023 00:01

Confinement?! No Victorian melodramatic pregnancy here. There’s wine to drink!

However, theres many condiments to be consumed.

Next you’ll be adding ketchup and corn on the cob. I don’t wish to appear draconian but honestly there’s such a thing as being too relaxed.

Horseradish is very good with smoked salmon. (I’m so sorry @HostieForARoastie I can’t help it.)

Robotalkingrubbish · 12/10/2023 01:44

I love a roast chicken dinner but I just have to have sage and onion stuffing with it. 🤷‍♀️

00100001 · 11/10/2023 23:27

Who needs 7 types of veg???

Why does this remind me of the 5 a day potato from Peppa Pig! Always remember to eat your five seven!

geoger · 12/10/2023 02:05

That many side dishes/veg need more meat. I’d be doing another joint of meat to go with the chicken eg gammon or pork shoulder. Plz keep the stuffing and the pigs in blanket too. Or ditch the chicken and go for a wonderful rib of beef or even a Turkey if you can find one

HistoriaTrixie · 12/10/2023 03:10

Relish tray with pickles and olives?

Millybob · 12/10/2023 04:17

How big are your dinner plates? (I like to spread out, not pile high.)

NoTeaNoShade · 12/10/2023 05:04

It is 05:03 in the morning and I want to eat all of this now

fuckssaaaaake · 12/10/2023 07:01

No peas, runner beans or mash for me but each to their own. Sounds nice
