Sunday Lunch - What’s Missing?

HostieForARoastie · 11/10/2023 14:03

I’ve for 6 coming for Sunday lunch. No vegetarians. Doing roast chicken as I know I cook a blinding one. Broccoli is delicious but has no place on a roast IMHO, however one of my guests has a weakness for it with chicken so, absolutely, I’m serving it. Same with Yorkshires - I’m not a fan but I know others are, so Yorkies it is. Two types of potatoes because we are Irish and it’s the Irish Law.

To be clear, all of the below is being served and will be (to use the MN term) ‘cooked from scratch’. What I’m looking for is: Anything Missing?

Roast chicken (with lemon rind, thyme, pancetta mixed with butter and stuffed under the skin)
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing (chestnut based)
Cauliflower cheese
Red cabbage
Roasted carrots (& boiled carrots in case they become blacker than my soul)
Roasted parsnips
Roast potatoes
Mashed potatoes
Yorkshires
Runner beans
Broccoli
Peas (and maybe sprouts)
Gravy
Bread sauce (maaaaaaybe)

Pudding will be a Blackberry Pavlova with all the creams / ice creams etc.

I want my guests to be more than replete at the end; I want them reminiscent of a landed, red cheeked and rounded bodied Georgian countryman tasting the bounty of his green and pleasant fields, whose breaches burst as as he reaches for the port. Human and modern day Toby Jugs if you like. To speak of this meal in tones of awe and glory (I’ll be giving them enough booze to ensure this) and to have enough left over to feed us for an evening of picking days.

What have I forgotten?

Ooh please do make the Bread sauce 😋

MrsHsGirl · 11/10/2023 14:21

I know you've said no but carrot and swede mash really is one of the best bits of the meal - I'd swap the boiled carrots (and probably also the roasted ones too) for it

That being said it sounds absolutely amazing - what time do you want us round 🤞

LateMumma · 11/10/2023 14:22

@HostieForARoastie apologies, I was distracted by cauli cheese 😉

@AtomicBlondeRose @Mothew I HATE apples. Hate them. Woody tasting things on nastiness. With toenails in the middle. Nope.

(but I do thank you and appreciate your contributions!)

You've forgotten my invite - otherwise perfection.

But I do prefer a sticky toffee pudding & custard... pudding 😋

oohsharon · 11/10/2023 14:24

Creamed leeks! On any roast dinner. And pickled onions, homemade sliced not from a jar.

Pinkpinkplonk · 11/10/2023 14:24

Xmas crackers!!
Cos your meal is awesome, it may as well be Christmas.

HostieForARoastie · 11/10/2023 14:26

Right so:

Anything missing from this? (amendments in bold)

Roast chicken
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Cauliflower cheese
Red cabbage
CARROT AND SWEDE MASH (will also do boiled for the colour)
Roasted parsnips
Roast potatoes
Mashed potatoes (am Irish…)
Yorkshires
Gravy
Runner beans (because I love them)
Broccoli
Peas
CREAMY CABBAGE AND LEEKS (with lardons, to keep those at the back happy!)

HostieForARoastie · 11/10/2023 14:27

@Pinkpinkplonk I thought this! Will see if I can source.

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 11/10/2023 14:27

Gratin dauphinois.
A citrus-based dessert because that's quite a heavy main course: lemon mousse? Clementine cake? Orange granita?

Gotta say OP, that rivals my once-a-year-only Christmas effort. Bloody hell.

redribbonrose · 11/10/2023 14:28

Too much . Way too much

Id get rid of the red cabbage
And runner beans

longtompot · 11/10/2023 14:29

Sounds delicious! I'll be there at 1? 😉

I know you said you hate apples @HostieForARoastie but I have recently discovered apple and rosemary jelly which is recommended with and is indeed delicious with roast chicken. Dead easy to make too

MrsHsGirl · 11/10/2023 14:30

God this just sounds incredible.

What's for pudding out of interest?

HostieForARoastie · 11/10/2023 14:30

@Raincloudsonasunnyday I adore dauphinois but I think they may over-egg the pudding and kill me in the process of making them

Pavlova will be pretty light and served a good while after the main course.

I LOVE cooking and a huge amount of this will be made on Friday / Sat (stuffing, cauliflower cheese, cabbage etc).

Pinkpinkplonk · 11/10/2023 14:30

Please let us know how it goes!

HostieForARoastie · 11/10/2023 14:31

@redribbonrose people will be serving themselves. No obligation to have every dish.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 11/10/2023 14:31

Oh my god that sounds amazing.

I know you're looking for adds, not subtracts, but I wouldn't do two cabbages - you'll get a lot of waste there and neither make a good soup.

Please can you make stuffing balls instead of a big slab of stuffing because I like the crispy bits? Also please confirm volume of gravy. I need a boating pond's worth, personally.

redribbonrose · 11/10/2023 14:31

Why do it to yourself and create waste?

Alargeoneplease89 · 11/10/2023 14:31

Nothing to add other then I need a picture when it's cooked 😂 food porn

Alargeoneplease89 · 11/10/2023 14:32

redribbonrose · 11/10/2023 14:31

Why do it to yourself and create waste?

Bore off - how do you know there will be a morsel left?

AlltheFs · 11/10/2023 14:32

It sounds like absolute perfection @HostieForARoastie

Can we please have a picture of the repast when it is on the table?

DH does a blinding roast chicken but is far too stingy on the sides and I wish to show him how it is “done proper” 🧐

LardoBurrows · 11/10/2023 14:34

It all sounds glorious and you sound like a wonderful host. However, I would respectfully suggest a 2nd choice of pudding, something like a steamed or baked jam, golden syrup or sticky toffee pudding with lashings of custard. Or maybe rhubarb crumble, lemon mousse, cheesecake or my favourite- Delia's chocolate bread and butter pudding - food of the gods.

Or you could do a cheeseboard instead of a 2nd pudding, with a nice bottle of port.

HostieForARoastie · 11/10/2023 14:34

@LaviniasBigBloomers yes to stuffing balls!

@redribbonrose because:

a) I enjoy it
b) it’s a special meal FOR FUN!
c) because there won’t be waste

More gravy - there's never enough gravy!!

I remember we all used to enjoy MIL's delicious roast dinners but there was never enough gravy. We all quietly tolerated it for years until the time SIL 2 (BILs wife) was brave enough to pipe up that she wondered if it would be possible to have more gravy in future. MIL duly obliged and we all lived happily ever after - and SIL2 is my heroine!

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 11/10/2023 14:38

Pork based stuffing? I hate chestnuts hence the add!
