...before you read it in my title?

I've got tickets and am madly excited, was commenting to a friend about an issue wrt transport - she knows I am a massive athletics fan.

She said, oh, is there something big in Paris next summer? I was a bit 😮and asked if she was joking, but she also asked a couple of other ppl and they also had no idea.

So, pretty lighthearted really, obv not life or death, more of a straw poll of Sunday MN - did you know? It's a mahooosive deal in my house and also a lot of my circle- but then a number of those people are big on athletics like me.

Really? Netball isn’t an Olympic sport.

Oops, my bad. Beach volleyball

Yes which is why I went this year 😂

Bien sur!

Got weightlifting tickets, but can’t figure out the accommodation. Not a traveler so trying to figure it all out is very daunting.

It's especially difficult because a lot of places are either booked up , crazy expensive or so dodgy you can't trust them to not cancel at the last minute.
After going around in circles for a couple of hours we gave up and just booked an Accor hotel (the official Olympic partner). The prices were quite reasonable for a proper hotel as opposed to AirBnB and the like.

Janinejones · 08/10/2023 21:21

We know a man who is on standby for a competition. If the favourite bloke does not recover fitness in time. Our friend will compete. Very Exciting.

Whatthetrolley · 08/10/2023 21:22

Yes!!! Have my tickets and accommodation. Have saved for 4 years so prices weren't too much of a shock as had the money up front. Excited to take my kids. Have loved the Olympics since Seoul. This will be number 2 for me; we missed out on tickets for London

Toefingers · 08/10/2023 21:23

I had no idea

i always take an interest in the Olympics (only watching on TV) but there’s literally been no coverage or mention of it. I watch BBC breakfast every day and it’s not come up, which is usually where I hear about big upcoming events. Doesn’t seem to have the publicity as previously.

Any tips?? What are you doing to explore the city(ies) between games (unless you're a Paris regular)

DinnaeFashYersel · 08/10/2023 21:27

I'm in Paris just now and there's Olympic signage everywhere. They are really going for it.

BygoneDays · 08/10/2023 21:40

No….!!!!!
When did that happen? Wow! Has it just been announced? Do the French know yet?

LindorDoubleChoc · 08/10/2023 21:43

Yes. I know someone who already has a contract to work there.

SophiaElise · 08/10/2023 21:43

Yes - and I will be there! Big sports fan.

SuperCam · 08/10/2023 22:00

What I’d like to know is how anyone got tickets to something they wanted to see - unless that was football. We signed up for all the ticket sales but each window that opened had virtually nothing available and never anything in a sport we wanted to see. I never did find out how you could buy tickets to the climbing as they never showed up on any occasion when we could search for and in theory buy tickets.

The “games pack” thing where you had to book for 3 events seemed particularly like a rip off :-(

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 08/10/2023 22:08

I had heard this but it's not the sort of information I retain. If someone had asked me where the Olympics were next year, I wouldn't have remembered without googling!

clary · 08/10/2023 22:10

Ah well so pretty mixed - feels like the majority here did know (@BygoneDays can't work out if you are being sarcastic - tho tbh I felt the same with my friend haha) but then those who knew are mostly sporty which my mate deffo is not.

Tickets - well! I thought there was a lot of publicity around this actually but maybe only bc it was on my radar. I saw a lot of comments on SM from ppl unable to book for their chosen sport. We hoped for gymnastics but the only tickets I could have booked were nowhere near our other tickets.

We have a bundle of three - 2 x athletics and one (random) waterpolo - wouldn't let me book 3 athletics. Then went back for single tickets and booked another athletics session. Fingers crossed we should see Mondo!

No swimming at all tho and as I say, gymnastics wouldn't work.

Suggest anyone not already booked into a hotel gets a wiggle on - there was very little when I booked. I have paid <gasp> almost £2k (shhh) for two hotel rooms for five nights - tho tbh that's only (only!) £200 per room per night. hmmm

Eurostar booking opens next month - tho I struggled to find this out, it was very secret. Also interested to see prices. But we are super flexible in terms of time of travel as I have booked a buffer day each end to avoid that awful "will we get there in time" vibe.

@DangerousMouse OMG fantastic! that will be amazing. We also have tickets for the London meet in July - will see you all there.

Yes, absolutely- we looked at tickets but only mega expensive was available. So TV it is.

had no idea about bedbugs though 😀

I don't remember the Olympics hype starting this early - it usually picks up in the Spring, 3-4 months before the game.
Of course there'd be a big fuss made if it was actually in the UK (like with Eurovision) but it isn't. Just next door.

Biggest tip from Olympics (and Commonwealth Games) buy your merchandise when you see it. Don't wait as it will never appear again! We have accomodation with a pool so plan on relaxing when we dont have events but we have a pretty hectic 4 days and a morning session for swimming so planning on knocking out most of the touristy bits in the afternoon!

BonjourCrisette · 08/10/2023 22:17

I knew! But only because DH is working on it.

ooh yes good tip. We were at the Worlds in Budapest last month and DD was wanting the mascot toy - but only mentioned it on the day we were leaving - couldn't find him anywhere!

Tickets were a complete palava compared to other years. We were lucky as a family member was pulled early in the games pack so managed to get a swimming heat. The second round by the time we were drawn whatever left was a ridiculous price. But randomly on a Wednesday in July I kept seeing posts saying tickets available on the main site so got on and picked 2 events where Team GB have a chance of a medal in the hope we see a podium!

IMustDoMoreExercise · 08/10/2023 19:59

Yes. That is why they are so concerned about the bed bugs as they think it will stop people going there.

I was going to reply saying that all the bedbugs know about the Paris Olympics and have travelled to get there early.

Seriously, I am sure that the French will hve sorted out the bed bug problem by next summer.

I am absolutely DESPERATE to get tickets for the Equestrian Showjumping for me and my daughter who is an aspiring show jumper, but it seems I missed it and it's sold out 😭I am willing to pay hospitality ticket prices if anyone knows any way I might still get 2 tickets to the showjumping.

Actually (not helpful, but sympathetic) equestrian was one of the big events where I saw a lot of comments from ppl unable to get tickets.

The hospitality info I have seen includes a request form - have you tried this? Dread to think what it might cost tho!

Is there actually stuff that'll be there only on the day?
Looks like some things are already online~
