I worked in a nursing home.

chipsandpeas · 07/10/2023 12:44

ThreeRingCircus · 07/10/2023 12:51

I worked in WHSmith

Berninaa · 07/10/2023 12:53

M&S shop floor.

Passerillage · 07/10/2023 12:54

Temping in offices during the summer. Did not work during term time. Temping paid really well though because I had outstanding secretarial skills, and it was super easy. I was even able to do all my reading for the following academic year!

NorthCliffs · 07/10/2023 13:01

40hrs a week as a care assistant, as well as full-time study. Phew!

LividGas · 07/10/2023 13:02

Blockbuster video, 25 hours a week, six free rentals.

SusanSHelit · 07/10/2023 13:05

I was a cook in a gaming cafe. Absolutely loved that job and probably would have stayed there forever if it paid better. I was good friends with 90% of the customers through table top gaming before it was ever even set up and we had an absolute blast

ComtesseDeSpair · 07/10/2023 13:10

I worked in a London souvenir shop. I had loads of really cool colleagues along the way, mainly Europeans doing a stint in the UK to improve their English, and learned a lot about varying cultural mores around gift giving.

smilesup · 07/10/2023 13:11

Waitress in various restaurants and cafes
Temping in offices, lots of filing and data entry.
Care work for elderly people with no fucking training. Poor people.
It was in the 90s and I loved it when Labour brought in the minimum wage as my wage more than doubled overnight!

CyberCritical · 07/10/2023 13:11

25hrs evening work in a call centre Mon-Fri and retail work weekends, during the holidays I picked up overtime in either job but preferably the call centre as more likely to get time and a half or double pay.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/10/2023 13:11

I was a mature student and was a qualified nurse so I worked as a Theatre Staff Nurse..

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 07/10/2023 13:13

During vacations (no work in term time)

Behind the counter in a dry cleaners
Filing agents forms for Freemans' (the catalogue company). Awful, it was like working for Scrooge. No talking allowed and the managers sat at their desks on dais watching everyone

I must have mercifully blocked the others.

Singleandproud · 07/10/2023 13:14

Summer season only in my hometown, face painting, hair wrapping, temporary and air spray tattooist.
The money was fantastic at the time £5 an hour compared to minimum wage which was just over £3.

Totaly · 07/10/2023 13:16

I worked on a market stall £10 a day. Could buy a round of drinks and a new top for that.

marypoppinsreturns · 07/10/2023 13:17

I worked in Asda.

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 07/10/2023 13:17

At various times, I worked in a gift shop, a call centre, an amusement arcade and in an office as a summer temp. I used to amuse myself by signing fake names on the compliments slips when I posted stuff out. You never see compliments slips these days!

IHeartKingThistle · 07/10/2023 13:17

Saturdays in an opticians. Some shifts in the Spar on campus.

ALunchbox · 07/10/2023 13:18

Waitressing and bartending during the academic year.
Summer camp in the Summer.

ALunchbox · 07/10/2023 13:18

Oh and a brief stint in a call centre but that wasn't for me.

IHeartGeneHunt · 07/10/2023 13:22

Waitress in a cafe.

HellToupee · 07/10/2023 13:24

Tequila Slammer Girl. I worked on a commission basis in a Cajun Bar Restaurant and on a good day I could easily make my rent in 1 day. Great fun too!

Lottie4 · 07/10/2023 13:27

Not me, but DD. Xmas temp in cafe, work in local supermarket as a customer assistant (she was doing 39 hours a week 2020-2022 during lockdown and studying), then team leader for uni's stores opening up, doing cash and generally assisting as required.

SellFridges · 07/10/2023 13:29

In term time I showed people round on open days. It was £10 a tour and I’d do a campus tour followed by a halls tour most Wednesdays.

In the hols I worked in a pub.

CaptainCallisto · 07/10/2023 13:37

40+ hours a week in a fish and chip shop, on top of full-time uni. I was a bloody wreck by the end!
