@Whalewatchers Haha sorry - you’re right, that came out badly! 😳😂 There was more context coming but I had to go midsentence - I went to uni after working in offices for a few years as a lowly admin, but this was long enough ago that “secretary” was still a job, and I was very lucky to be able do this instead of bar/waitressing work which was very badly paid in comparison (at least where I’m from).

tobyiana · 07/10/2023 14:26

I did a delivery job delivering newspaper. I wasn't made out for working in catering.

mrsnjw · 07/10/2023 14:53

LBOCS2 · 07/10/2023 15:10

Temped during the long holidays, first two years it was in London with surveying firms, third year it was as a medical secretary for the local private hospital. During term time I worked behind the bar at one of the nightclubs a couple of nights a week.

FrenchFancie · 07/10/2023 15:19

Mostly bar work, although I’m probably the only student who got sacked from Pizza Hut for incompetence….

ConnieTucker · 07/10/2023 15:27

Bakery
Waitress
Bar work
Clothes shop: sales advisor and stock room management
Call centre

justasking111 · 07/10/2023 15:30

Bar work because I lived in a bedsit alone so it was a social life as well as a job

MorvernBlack · 07/10/2023 15:36

At school, delivered the local free paper for a penny a paper and delivered the Sunday papers and a Sat job in a florist doing dried flower arrangements (it was the 80s!) Plus helped in the shop. Kennel assistant, worked in a picture framers at college and industrial contract cleaning at 4am!

TheShellBeach · 07/10/2023 15:37

I was a cleaner. I went to one lady every week for ages.

StoatofDisarray · 07/10/2023 15:40

Barmaid, washing up in a restaurant, clothes shop assistant, cleaning student common areas in a Cambridge college, night shift agrochemical packing in a warehouse, working in a bookshop, cleaning council offices, various holiday jobs connected with my second degree.

I did two different degrees ten years apart, so I was at uni for a total of six years.

MoiraRosesBaybay · 07/10/2023 15:46

I worked front of house at various theatres. The best thing about that was that it meant you got a membership card to a late night, members only club. It was just for people working in theatres, tv and newspapers. It was open from about 11 at night until 6am. Christ we had some nights in there. The best thing was when they had karaoke on and all the actors would do a turn - stars of musicals singing their socks off for fun.

In the summer I worked as a cleaner at a children’s adventure summer camp. It was great as we all lived on site. And it was a complete fuck fest.

JimnJoyce · 07/10/2023 15:56

I was a Silver Service waitress

fishfingersandtoes · 07/10/2023 15:59

Cleaner, barmaid, assembly line in a factory, script checking for an exam board. I didn't work in the third year but usually sorted something out in the holidays.

dizzydizzydizzy · 07/10/2023 16:04

McDonald's in y1, then gave that up because in a performance review the manager gave me one point less than I needed for a 5p/hour pay ride. After that I has a series of lucrative summer holiday office jobs.

Cumbrianlife · 07/10/2023 16:04

I was a mature student at university. I simply carried on working as a private chef, picking and choosing clients that fitted in around my studies and family.
DD works in McDonald's. It's fantastic. She's currently at sixth form but at 17 she qualified as a crew trainer after working there six months so earns (iirc) £10.40 an hour. They've told her when she goes to university she'll be able to work in one at college but also pick up shifts when she is home. Theyre great when she needs time off for things like work experience placements. I've been surprised how much DD enjoys it and just how well they look after their staff.

Nigelladamascena · 07/10/2023 16:08

All year round......

Cleaning in a pub
Bar maid
Overnight motorcycle courier - Friday and Saturday nights when the regular guys were in the pub. It was well paid but cold and dangerous.

SleepingStandingUp · 07/10/2023 17:46

Catering for Student Union, I loved it. Great team, over time at the start and ned of the season. Uni holidays I did more catering, best was agency work so lots of different places every day.
