If you were famous would you be cancelled?

I was just thinking that with the cancel culture as it is I would hate to be famous and have my past dragged up all the time.

I'd be cancelled for my gender critical views and have my past thrown at me as I have a criminal record for assault. The assault was about 20 years ago but still someone would no doubt use it against me and say how evil I am. It got me thinking about how I DO sometimes judge famous people for things they've done in the past but I'd hate for people to constantly judge me for my own past so maybe I need to be a bit more compassionate. I don't know why I judge famous people or public figures harshly sometimes for things I wouldn't judge people in real life for 🤔

If you were famous would you be cancelled and if so, why?

I’m sure I would as would most people. If I think about some of the things I might have said say 20 years ago that I didn’t understand were offensive.

lightinthebox · 05/10/2023 17:38

A criminal record for assault isn’t something to be easily dismissed though. Racist and homophobic views would be very different to GC views.

myjohnnywasasaint · 05/10/2023 17:39

I'd probably be cancelled for saying you can't change sex. Which you can't.

GreyDress · 05/10/2023 17:55

I wonder if I would be brave enough to voice my gender critical views if I were famous.

AccusedBy · 05/10/2023 17:58

I’m not famous and literally got cancelled in RL !!! It’s not nice 😭😭😭

Whatttt how?! (If you don’t mind sharing ofc)

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 05/10/2023 18:01

Yep, definitely. For my gc views and potentially other things. I'd absolutely hate to be famous anyway - the whole idea of it has never appealed to me. I find it baffling that so many people would apparently love to be in the public eye.

You wouldn't necessarily need to do that to be cancelled. The baying mob coupd just trawl through any wrongthink posts, comments or likes that you had ever made, from long before you were famous.

ParanoidJo · 05/10/2023 18:05

Yes, I’d be cancelled for saying only a man and a woman can make a baby. I’d also be called a right wing gammon for agreeing with Rishi Sunak today, that there can be only two sexes. Mad isn’t it.

Combination of things involving a false allegation of FII (munchausens by proxy) , the fact I confided in someone who then told everyone and I lost so many friends as people are very much ‘no smoke without fire’ and I’m just seen as someoe to avoid just in case and nobody wants their dc associated with us because ‘it might be true’ , all professionals we’ve ever known and will ever know are informed even though no concerns were found on investigation it still remains on notes and if for example one of dc has a referral it’s on the letter each time , we moved schools twice and it follows us

RaeHitsEbSire · 05/10/2023 18:16

I don't think I would be cancelled but I can think of a few people who might rise up from the depths of my past and say unpleasant but true things about me.

Wakingprim · 05/10/2023 18:57

@AccusedBy That's shocking, why is it still on referral letters?

MsLavender · 05/10/2023 19:01

@AccusedBy I'm so sorry you're going through that. I know someone else who had a false allegation of that and I believe they were gagged by the courts to prevent them speaking about it! I can't imagine how devastating it must have been (and continues to be) for you.

@lightinthebox I agree that assault shouldn't be easily dismissed but if someone has shown they've changed and it was 20 years ago surely they should be allowed to move on given they've already been punished for the crime? It also stays on your record forever so there are certain jobs I wouldn't even apply for with my criminal record. I'd probably never be able to adopt or foster which is fine, I accept that is the consequences of my own stupid behaviour, but I don't feel I deserve to continuously be hauled over hot coals for it but maybe I'm wrong.

Sadly they'd probably twist things and add details to make it more headline grabbing too! I'd hate being famous, it seems like torture to me to have everyone raking through your past and present. Then you get headlines about a famous persons sibling being a sex pest or something too so it's not just you it's your whole bloody family.

Has to stay on mine and dc medical notes - I argued this but was told it was professional opinion and it needs to stay on there alongside the CP investigation but then it does say ‘no concerns found’ but when it goes on referral letters it just says ‘SS CP involvement’

PinkyU · 05/10/2023 19:11

Nope, not even a little bit. I’m pretty unproblematic.

CurlewKate · 05/10/2023 19:11

I wouldn't because I would probably keep my mouth shut about it if I had a family to support. Depends what I was a celebrity for, I suppose.

cardibach · 05/10/2023 19:14

No. Because cancelling isn’t a thing.

Badbadbunny · 05/10/2023 19:14

Racist and homophobic views hasn't "cancelled" Tyson Fury, though, has it?

It seems some people are immune and excused if they're popular, yet others have their entire professional lives destroyed for saying/doing much less.

Yes. No famous woman has ever found her career cancelled because of the things she says. Ask Harvey Weinstein.

Sparehair · 05/10/2023 19:21

Me: yay I’m famous. Bring on the insta endorsements.
My enemies: here’s some photos of Spare Hair at “the face of evil” themed fancy dress party.
me: Oh Shitballs

More cancelled than the Northern line.

I‘m also thinking maybe the No toga toga party wasn't the best idea if I ever want to be PM.

Gowlett · 05/10/2023 19:24

I’d be featured in the Circle of Shame.
Can’t believe that was even a thing…

What does FII mean? I don’t think I’ve come across the term before. Needless to say that sounds absolutely awful. Why does it need to stay on DCs notes and referrals if no concerns were found??

Berlinlover · 05/10/2023 19:26

I got cancelled by some of my colleagues for not agreeing with masks and lockdowns during Covid.

Who did you dress as? 😂

I've been to a bad taste fancy dress party and I'd probably be sacked if those pics were leaked to my work.

What did this ‘cancellation ‘ look like? Were you not allowed to hold that (pretty silly) opinion? Were you arrested and locked up? Did you lose your job?
Or did people just disagree with you? And not want to associate with someone whose behaviour might put them at risk?
