How to get this out of DD's hair????

SisterMichaelsHabit · 05/10/2023 16:56

Ok my one year old pulled her nappy off in the night, widdled and lay her head in it. Her hair STINKS. It doesn't smell like normal wee, it stinks like a urinal! She has had her hair washed and dried twice so far today (and once with Listerine as it works for pit smells on DH's shirts) it's just not coming out, does anyone have any suggestions? I can't use anything too harsh, she's only 1! I'm half-considering shaving her head and burying the hair where it can't harm anyone.

I'm taking her to the park now so will probably reply to people after 6. Thanks in advance!

Tomato juice works for skunks spray. So might be worth a try lol

We do have quite a few tins of tomatoes, will try this when I get her in the bath after the park and I'll report back. Do you just apply it directly onto the affected area? 😅

Lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda mixed into in a paste, rubbed in then rinsed off.

Bicarb?

lostinabook · 05/10/2023 19:13

Tomato ketchup works on fur and fox shit and easier to use than chopped tomatoes

SisterMichaelsHabit · 05/10/2023 21:11

Ok I put tinned tomatoes on her head (ketchup didn't occur to me). I don't know if I should have left it on there for a while, it was on for over a minute as I decided I had to get a picture (or three) of the baby with tomatoes on her head, but when I washed it off it was as bad as ever! I then tried shampooing again, that made it worse somehow.

Also loads of bits of tomato and tomato seeds got stuck in her hair. So now she's a smelly tomato baby. 🤣

She's at the childminder's tomorrow. Maybe I need to go on annual leave and keep her at home until she stops smelling like this.

I've also now tried Febreze. I really didn't want to as she's 1 but I thought it would be the nuclear option, it used to sort out my sister's mattress when she wet it every night when I was a child.

It. Did. Nothing. Once it had dried the smell shone through.

Seriously WTF is this? It actually smells like when we went to the farm and looked around the pig pen. If I hadn't found it on the bedding I'd be wondering if she'd rolled in something dodgy at the park!

I don't have any lemons but I just got some bicarb this morning from Prime to clean something else. Is it definitely baby-safe? Last time I made a paste of shampoo and bicarb it got hot and burned my hair and scalp (it was supposed to get green dye out. It didn't) so I'm a bit worried about using bicarb since DD's still got very thin baby hair.

What the hell are you doing to your child? You're acting like this is one big joke? Poor child.

BertieBotts · 05/10/2023 21:33

Stop putting stuff on it. Just let her go to bed and wash it again with normal shampoo tomorrow night. Explain to the childminder what happened. It will probably wash out normally in a few days.

Moomoomo · 05/10/2023 21:38

I'd leave her be. She's probably massively confused about why she has been sprayed, covered in stuff and washed so many times. Her scalp will get very sore if you're not careful.

The childminder won't care, they've seen it all.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 05/10/2023 21:39

You've left tomato bits in her hair? Are you taking the mick?

I've no idea if this is serious or not.

NotSoCoolCarrie · 05/10/2023 21:40

Are you sure it still smells? Wee isn't that hard to wash out.

This. It's absolutely horrific to read

OP, you sound utterly nuts.

Cracked. Completely cracked.

Leave your poor baby be.

Scampuss · 05/10/2023 21:57

FFS, stop bothering the poor kid!

Are you actually sure it's her and not that you might have covid which is fucking up your sense of smell?

Kissmas · 05/10/2023 22:00

You sprayed febreze on a baby? Fucking hell

INeedNewShoes · 05/10/2023 22:09

Shit please stop spraying harmful chemicals on your daughter!!

YokoOnosBigHat · 05/10/2023 22:17

If it helps I'm laughing a lot @SisterMichaelsHabit .... I don't think that you're a monster and I'd probably do all of the same things. But by Mumsnet standards I'm a terrible parent.

What have I just read!! Please tell me that Photo isn't real!? Shock

LemonWaterSugar · 05/10/2023 22:45

This is a joke right?

JustMaggie · 05/10/2023 22:55

Listerine, Febreeze, tinned tomatoes... please stop. Your poor baby.

determinedtomakethiswork · 05/10/2023 22:56

I burst out laughing when I saw that you can actually put a tin of tomatoes on your baby's head in the belief it would stop it smelling of urine. She must smell like a pizza now.

Wow this thread took a turn since my last post.

LOL I think the AIBU crowd have come back from the pub. 🤷‍♀️

Apparently I'm now a bad mother for trying to stop my daughter from smelling like urine and for also writing about it in an upbeat manner. 🤣

Maybe I should have written it like this:

"Oh god, oh god, I think someone needs to call social services my child smells bad and I tried to get it out with suggestions from people on MN. What do I do? Maybe I should call 101 and see if they can report it as I'm clearly an unfit mother because I covered my daughter's face with a towel before spraying her hair with one single squirt of Febreze and apparently it's not made from completely organic, free range breezes so I have ruined my baby FOR LIFE and now she won't get a place in an RG uni no matter where I buy into the catchment area for an outstanding secondary. I mean dear God, why did I even have kids when I wasn't going to take every single little thing way too seriously and die of an aneurysm at 36 from panicking about everything that ever happened to them."

Cue the "you think you're funny OP but it's actually tragic" comments followed by more "this isn't real because I've never met anyone who owned a tin of tomatoes" and the occasional person actually trying to give advice but being shot down by those who don't like threads getting un-derailed for a full bingo card. 🥳 Hopefully what I win is the actual answer to my problem.

But what I find really funny is that apparently it wouldn't have been bad for me to put lemon and bicarb on a one-year-old's hair despite the NaHCO3 (an abrasive alkaline scouring agent that can remove rust) and citric acid (an acid) causing a neutralisation reaction which produces heat and BOTH the products are potential irritants for a child's skin when mixed like this, because those are NATURAL ingredients, but Febreze = death because BAD CHEMICALS ARE BAD.

Once again I feel the need to apologise on behalf of my former profession as a science teacher that we let down so many of the posters on MN by not teaching you a fit for purpose curriculum.

No I shampooed it out twice with her baby shampoo so she just smells like urine again. She probably had more tomatoes in her hair yesterday as we had spag bol for dinner and her use of a spoon is still... erratic. 😅
