What time do you eat dinner/evening meal?

We are a family of 5. Children 9 and under. Youngest almost 3.

We usually eat around 5.30pm.
A friend has kids a similar age and eats around 8pm which results in a later bedtime.

Just wondering what time is dinner for you? And what time would your young kids that age go to bed?

Our youngest is usually in bed around 7.30/7.45. Older two around 8.30/8.45pm.

We’ve generally eaten about 7:30pm. Mine are 5 & 10. Even when youngest was a baby, we ate this time. We are barely done work at 5:30pm, so don’t usually start cooking til around 6:30-6:45pm after everything else is done, and then by the time we actually sit down it’s 7:30. Mine are usually asleep by 9:30-10pm. It would be great if it was earlier but just not possible because everything is too busy.

I'm a sahm and DH works from home so we don't have any time restrictions. Kids are 7, 11 and 14 and are always very hungry when they get home from school. We have dinner at 5-5:30.

Parker231 · 04/10/2023 20:27

Usually 7.30 / 8 - gave enough time to get out of work, get the tube, collect DT’s from nursery and walk home.

When I’m not intermittent fasting I eat late, 9/10pm. Dd eats at 6ish and I always had something with her and my main meal later.

Now we both eat at 5:30pm. Much more stressful cooking 2 meals (Dd is very food averse) in a short amount of time. But I am less of a chonk so every cloud and all that.

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/10/2023 20:31

8 to 8.30pm.

Hobbitfeet32 · 04/10/2023 20:35

These threads always fascinate me. But I do think people should also say what time they have to get up in the morning as well because I think that can influence the timings of meals.
We are up at 6.30am, kids 9 and 11. Eat anytime between 5.30- 7pm depending on what evening activities are on. Also allows both parents to get some exercise in. Kids in bed 8.30/9pm.

BookSuperWorm · 04/10/2023 20:57

Dinner is cooked once kids are in bed. We eat about 8:40/9pm.

We get up at 6:30am. Both work FT.

Ifailed · 04/10/2023 21:02

It moved with the children's age, had tea about 5 - 5:30 when they were young then about 7ish when they were at secondary school.

WimpoleHat · 04/10/2023 21:04

I have older kids (early secondary). We usually eat about 7.45/8. I’d prefer a bit later left to my own devices, but it’s nice to have a family meal. Get up at 7.

Riverlee · 04/10/2023 21:06

We eat at around 5.30-6pm also. Then the mealtime is finished and you have the rest of the evening free,

Don’t have young kids anymore, but we still ear early.

consideringachange · 04/10/2023 21:12

We are also a family of five, the eldest is 10 and has just started secondary (not in the UK), youngest is 1. We eat at 7 which is early for where we live but the baby goes to bed about 8 so realistically it's about the latest we can manage and all eat together. We usually have a break after the main course and have fruit/yoghurt/pudding later on, once the baby is in bed. My older two get into bed about 9, ideally the 8 year or is asleep by 9.30 and the 10 year old by 10 but I often have to tell him to stop reading.

MollyMarples · 04/10/2023 21:13

5:30 so we’re eating same time as baby

Colourfulponderings · 04/10/2023 21:18

5-5.30pm so we all eat as family. 1y/o bed at 6.30pm and then 5 y/o bedtime starts at 7pm.

All up at 7-7.30am.

I have no idea how families fit in extra curricular activities too!

Bubbles254 · 04/10/2023 21:18

I eat at 5pm with children and get up at 5am. DH eats at random times depending if he is commuting or on work calls but rarely eats with us.

Goldencup · 04/10/2023 21:19

7pm here it is compromise as I would eat at 6-6:30 and DH not until at least 8.

Only one left at school now she usually has a snack when she comes in ( 5ish).

When they were nursery age they ate at 5:30 bed 7:30-8. Then we would eat. We all ate together once the youngest was in yr1.

We are up between 5 &6 am

Makingplansfor2029 · 04/10/2023 21:21

Never before 6.30, usually about 7.

I cannot fathom having my evening meal at 5/5.30. I’m often still working, one doesn’t finish school until 5.30 and I’d be climbing the walls with hunger by 8pm

BHRK · 04/10/2023 21:22

6..30-7, we all eat together. If it’s just dh and I then 9pm

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 04/10/2023 21:23

I’m eating mine now.

Its rarely earlier than 7.30pm but 9.30-10 isn’t unusual.

Feedmechoccy · 04/10/2023 21:23

6pm for ours. Primary age & toddler.

Always served tea at this time so they can get straight in the bath after & be ready for bedtime.

addictedtotheflats · 04/10/2023 21:25

We have 1 DC4, we either eat with him around 6/7 or feed him then put him to bed and we will eat around 8.

Oldermum84 · 04/10/2023 21:25

3.5 year old eats dinner at 4:30pm at nursery and 5pm the rest of the week at home, but on his own. He's in bed by 7 (up at 6:30). We then eat around 7:30pm. We eat all together at 5pm weekends.

LovelyMMOG · 04/10/2023 21:25

About 8pm. I get up at 6.30am.

I’m always surprised by how many people eat at 5.30. What a long evening after dinner.

Tisfortired · 04/10/2023 21:26

Before DS2 was born and it was just myself, DP and our 9 year old, we’d eat at around 6:00/6:30 when we got in from work. Since DS2 (9 months) has started weaning we eat around 5 so it’s not too late for him.

I much prefer eating later as I find myself eating ‘supper’ when we eat so early because I’m starving at around 8!

Canibearsed · 04/10/2023 21:27

When children were young they ate about 530 and we ate about 7.30 . When they were teenagers I cooked a meal at about 7 and they had food when they got home after clubs etc. I never insisted on everyone sitting together because it wasn’t sustainable and teenagers absolutely hate being forced into’awkward’ eating chirping about their day !

TheChosenTwo · 04/10/2023 21:30

Usually between 8-8:30. Dc are 11 and 17 so not little although we’ve always eaten around this time. Obviously when the kids were small they ate earlier.
I’m up at 5:45 3 days a week so I can swim before getting everyone up and out and the other mornings I’m up at 6:30.
swimming days I’ll have breakfast at about 10, lunch at 1, a snack at about 4 and then dinner at 8. If I’ve not been swimming then I just have lunch, snack and dinner.
