Grace at meal times

Do you/your family ever say Grace?

We do for Sunday lunch and Christmas lunch.

No, never, the first time I came across grace (and this is with a grandma who never missed going to mass!) was at brownie pack holiday.

KnottyKnitting · 04/10/2023 19:52

Never- we did at school but then again I went to a catholic primary and we seemed to have a prayer for everything!

toastofthetown · 04/10/2023 19:52

The last time I said Grace I was nine years old at school. For what we are about to receive may the Lord make us truly thankful.

DH looked at me like I was bonkers when I said we had to chant that before lunch every day. I hated my school lunches, so years of daily prayer didn’t work. I still wouldn’t be truly thankful for a sandwich.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 04/10/2023 19:54

No, never. In fact, I've never seen anyone do it in real life.

CurlewKate · 04/10/2023 19:55

Not since FIL died. I'm an atheist, but I'm still a little sad about that.

whizzbangpopsplutter · 04/10/2023 19:56

We do.

Chattygirl123 · 04/10/2023 20:24

I'm a Christian so I say grace before every meal.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 04/10/2023 20:28

No. We are atheists. I quite liked the Latin grace at dinner at university (Oxford college) though, and can still remember it!

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 04/10/2023 20:29

Only when there are potatoes.

Oiyouoverthere · 04/10/2023 20:30

Sometimes. I'm a Christian.

mbosnz · 04/10/2023 20:33

Yes, my Dad was a believer, and my mother believed in form.

So we said grace before Sunday lunch, and special meals.

emmetgirl · 04/10/2023 20:34

No because I'm an atheist

SageRosemary · 04/10/2023 20:35

Father, Son & Holy Ghost,
He who eats the fastest gets the most ...

Always at Christmas, although not that version!

EfficientlyDecluttering · 04/10/2023 20:36

No, we used to before school dinners (and they were awful so it was hard to be truly thankful). Have occasionally at the houses of Christian friends and relations.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 04/10/2023 20:36

We don't in our house as none of us are religious.

We do often thank whoever made the meal when we've finished, which is quite nice.

cockeyedoptimist · 04/10/2023 20:37

I've only ever said grace at Brownie pack holiday and Guide camp ( there were loads of different ones )

  • the lord is good to me and so I thank the lord
  • bees of paradise , do the work of Jesus Christ
and quite a few more - haven't said them in over 30 years
AnotherCountryMummy · 04/10/2023 20:37

Sometimes. My girls have just randomly got into it. They aren't religious. But they make us all hold hands and one of them will say grace. It's really nice.

NinNinJin · 04/10/2023 20:37

Yes we do. When we eat together. Pretty much every day. And def when there is a bigger family event

WetBandits · 04/10/2023 20:37

Nope. I’m an atheist and god didn’t cook my dinner.

ZolaBudd · 04/10/2023 20:38

My dad was a vicar. We never did. I am an atheist, I don’t

BettyfromBristol · 04/10/2023 20:40

No. I am a Humanist so no goddess or god to thank.

Some of my in laws seem to do it regularly, even at a picnic once. I busy myself sorting out cutlery or whatever, I don't join in.

Ohmylovejune · 04/10/2023 20:44

No. My son often eats at a friends house and they do. I'm atheist and like the idea of grateful reflection but we don't do it.

weegiemum · 04/10/2023 20:44

We do, most of the time. We're Christian.

Clawdy · 04/10/2023 20:47

At school we had to chant : "For what we are about to receive, may the Lord make us truly thankful" but I remember some kids changing the last bit, muttering "May the Lord help us to recover!"

AnotherCountryMummy · 04/10/2023 20:48

ZolaBudd · 04/10/2023 20:38

My dad was a vicar. We never did. I am an atheist, I don’t

That's so interesting, did you ever know why he didn't?

I wonder if he had so much God at work that his quota was full by the time he got home 🙂
