What shall DH and I talk about over dinner tonight? (lighthearted)

DH and I are on holiday at the moment. Table for dinner is booked for 8.30. I love his company but I'm very aware that conversation is a bit small talky if we don't make an effort. This is nice, try the wine, did you call your mum today, fancy a walk later blah blah. Anyone fancy giving me a conversation starter? I'll update on how it goes!

So darling, I am going to spend most of the night posting on Mumsnet. Shall we talk about massive salads or roll our sleeves up and tackle how often we wash our towels . Or gloves off and discuss parent/child parking spaces.

Gear ratios?

bluebeardswife7 · 04/10/2023 19:21

evryevrytime · 04/10/2023 19:21

What's on your bucket list

Which countries in the world you'd still like to visit

Can you name every state in the USA

suzukili22 · 04/10/2023 19:22

How can you not know how to talk to your husband? Are you guys in a bad place?

We're in Portugal. Yes, very hot and gorgeous.

Definitely NOT the Roman Empire.

What's going on in the world? Politics, economics, that sort of thing?

Yourselves. I find (I'm sure I'll get blasted for this) that couples who don't have children tend to have a much better and deeper understanding of each other than couples with kids. They have more time and focus. Who knows, you might learn something about each other!

Hellostrawberries · 04/10/2023 19:29

He would definitely be happy to talk about the roman empire!
Off to a bar now.

We usually end up talking about:

-space
-black holes
-the ages of man (Neanderthal etc)

-super volcanos
-what I want to go next year without the kids (a break I am planning

-our gym workouts——
-recipie a we want to try
-PlayStation games on the list to get

we are a bit geeky though

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 04/10/2023 19:30

How about reminiscing over your youth or dating days ?

Sortmylifeout52 · 04/10/2023 19:31

The scrapping of HS2!! 😂

Hellostrawberries · 04/10/2023 19:32

Space, black holes and Dating days are strong contenders!

OP posts:
LadyMonicaBaddingham · 04/10/2023 19:32

The Romans.

Sortmylifeout52 · 04/10/2023 19:33

Name all the London boroughs..

Seriously, we end up talking about places we've visited, places we would like to visit.. then who is paying the bill!

RaceToTheMiddle · 04/10/2023 19:34

Not sure if you’re taking the mick @Hellostrawberries or not 😂😂 we just like topics like that!
also potential of other life forms out there 🔭

Holiday memories, best bits of this holiday, AITA posts

CurlewKate · 04/10/2023 19:44

Oh God- Nigel Farage is going to be PM in two years!

CurlewKate · 04/10/2023 19:46

DP and I went out to dinner for the first time in ages a while ago. The day before, DP came in from walking the dog and said "I've just hear the most amazing piece of gossip-but I'm not telling you-I'm saving it for tomorrow evening!"

NotFastButFurious · 04/10/2023 19:49

Make up a fictitious lifestyle and story about the people at a table across the restaurant (quietly and so they can’t hear you!)
or the scrapping of HS2

Do you also have cycling kids? How to make 3.24635 is far too much of me and dh’s conversation!

How about the just released VAR audio?

SandcastleQueen · 04/10/2023 19:56

Pre-kids, me and DH spent an entire evening sat on a balcony on holiday knocking back red wine and playing Shag Marry Kill. Great days, can recommend 😁

& was it worth waiting for ?

For OP:

Where do we go for our next break - each chose 1/3 places

David Beckham - have you seen his wardrobe ? Thoughts ?

Each pick another table at venue and create a whole life story about the couple /family at it

Look at the staff and rename them based on tv characters they most resemble

If you won 50k right now how would you spend it all - no saving allowed as it's fantasy money

foulksmills · 04/10/2023 20:05

You could talk about how the Korean for "hello" is 'annyeonghaseyo' (ang ning hi see yo) and the Korean for "goodbye" is 'annyeonghi gaseyo' (ang ning hi kai see yo)

Or how the English word "goodbye" started out as the greeting 'God be with ye' but got shortened and altered into one word. The Spanish word for "goodbye" ('adiós') literally means 'to God'.

Or you could discuss how we used to have a singular letter for the sound 'th'.

Or why there is a very popular car-sharing/taxi-like service that's just called 'very'. Well, 'über', but 'über' just means 'very'.

Is it weird that there is a specific word for your upper legs ('thigh') but none for your upper arms? They're just called 'upper arms'. There is a word for your lower arms, 'forearm' and two words for your lower legs, depending on whether you're referring to the front or the back, 'shin' and 'calf', respectively.

My husband and I are the same. We aren't people who talk for talkings sake. It's nothing to do with our relationship, just random talk is hard. It's just some people's personality.
