Would your 4 / 5 year old be ok watching the film Coco?

It's been suggested as a suitable Halloween film for a group of 4 / 5 year olds, and I seem to be the only one who thinks it might be too scary / upsetting for them.

I just wondered what others think. Would your children be ok watching it, or am I right in thinking it's going to leave quite a few children upset?

It’s a beautiful film. Full of lovely messages. And visually gorgeous. I think it’ll be fine.

My youngest loves this film, she's 5 and has watched it since she was 3. It's meant for kids and has a beautiful message. So unless you have a particularly sensitive child, I'm certain they'd be ok. You know your child best though.

Its a PG so wouldn't show it at a kids club/school but fine at home when its just a few friends.

Thank you for the replies, I appreciate them. Perhaps the others are right and the children will be fine. I just thought the themes had the potential to upset the children and might leave quite a few worried / scared.

That's interesting, do you mind me asking why it would be a no for a kids club / school. As my OP is about a club with quite a large group of 4 /5 year olds, rather than a home environment.

Yes and “Book of Life” set in Mexico around the day of the dead is even better imho.

Because you can only show U films to groups like this if you are not the parent, unless I guess you have written permission from each.

I completely agree with this. I have a very sensitive but Halloween-loving just turned four year old who wanted to watch it, I was poised by the off button but I think most of it went over her head, she didn't find it any worse than an episode of Peter Rabbit, for example. I'd say it's one of my favourite modern Disney films now to be honest.

Yes, which is possibly why I was worried about the children's reactions. It's a beautiful film, but also very moving and emotional. Smile

I don’t think you need permission but I’d say it’s good practice to inform parents in advance if showing a PG. Our school notify us if they’re planning to show a PG in class with option to take children out. Our Beaver Scouts group doesn’t.

As for Coco - my fairly sensitive 7 year old refuses to watch it as he finds the idea of talking skeletons scary.

That's why when we hold film nights at school (PA fundraisers), we put the film on the flyer. By purchasing a ticket, you are giving consent. Even if it isn't a 'paid for' event, I don't think written consent is necessary, but the organiser should be clear on the film choice in advance so parents can choose if their child attends or not. There are a variety of reasons a DC might not want to see a particular film, so this avoids a number of grumbles.

Coco is absolutely fine for 4 & 5yos IMO OP.

Most will be fine. Some won't but that's true for just about every kids film. If there's no emotion the films are just boring. At 4-5 they usually want more than films aimed at toddlers.

Haha absolutely not. Coco is the best! Pixar's aren't gonna upset anyone.. Its one of my faves. Its lovely 🩷

My DD loved it at that age! It's done so well. Nothing upsetting. Although I always cry like a baby at the song at the end, but then I cry at most Disney films, including/especially the Toy story films 😅

My kids both loved that film when it came out and they’d have been about 5 and 7.
I think it’s a beautiful film with great songs and music.

Scary what? It’s a song about a boy who wants to be a singer. Yes it includes day of the dead but you don’t even think ‘aw they’re dead’ they are just part of the movie. Such a good movie. X

My 4 YO watched it last week

My son loves it and has done since he was 3. It's my favourite of the newer Disney films.

It's not scary. It's really colourful and beautiful.

Interesting reading the responses. My then 6yo bawled her eyes out and asked why I made her watch something so sad. 3yo was fine but got bored. My kids are clearly the odd ones out though.

I think it would very much depend on the kids really. I think it's one of those Disney films that is probably more upsetting for adults. I've seen it twice and at 36 years old don't think I can watch it again as sobbed my eyes out, especially the last time as I'd forgotten that the song 'remember me' was played at a funeral I went to.
I'd expect the majority of kids though would enjoy it in a different way to adults though
