Who's had the current Covid strain? I've never felt so ill in my life :(

Started feeling rough at the weekend but thought I was just tired as I'd had my toddler grandson for the weekend, but went to walk the dog yesterday morning and realised I just couldn't... felt dazed and just not with it.

Got a blazing positive which is no surprise as it's spreading through my school like wildfire. By 9am my temp was well over 39, everything hurts and my HEAD. I have never had such a headache in my life, it feels like someone is drilling through my sinuses. I'm alternating paracetamol and ibuprophen but I literally can't get out of bed other than to stagger to the loo. I've pretty much dozed , sweated and that's it. Just waiting for next lot of pills to kick in so I can sleep again.

How long is this likely to last???

Were your vaccinations up to date? Hope you feel better very soon.

You can’t get vaccinated if you aren’t in a vulnerable group. So I’m guessing no… So shortsighted.

rovercat · 03/10/2023 21:19

@Lastchancechica Yes definitely, my dh had it, he tested positive 2 days after me. His symptoms were way milder than mine and he's pretty much back to normal now. I'm still exhausted by even the most basic things. We have 2 sets of friends who have had it very recently and the women had far worse symptoms.

Lastchancechica · 03/10/2023 21:22

Yes my modest observation is my friends are really struggling and their dps are not in a crippling way.

@Lastchancechica I was the same. I’m also very worried about this going forward. What damage will 20, 30, 40 times of getting this over our lifetime do? I think there will be an overall shortening of lifespan over the next 50 or so years. And we will be the unlucky ones.

That's what worries me
Everyone seems to have just accepted that "it's like a cold and we will get it repeatedly" but obviously there's no long term studies of what it will actually do to us
I'm lucky because I WFH as a reasonable adjustment due to being immunocompromised, 7 vaccines. Had covid once, caught it Christmas Day last year

Can I ask something. Amongst our friends it seems to be affecting women far more this time. Anyone else?

DH has refused to test - he seems fine. But he had one work call yesterday and his shirt was soaked with sweat. But apparently there's nothing wrong with him and I'm weird to suggest he take a test. I suspect he's also got covid as we usually sleep in the same bed.

So, a virus that hits elderly and women the hardest? Hmmm...

From what my friends and I have been able to tell - the inflammation can target almost anywhere and everywhere. We had severe pains in weird places. Mainly our ‘weak’ points, old fractures, arthritic toes, etc.

That does make sense - I do have some gum issues 😟

Doublerainbow23 · 03/10/2023 23:51

Lastchancechica How can you tell via the Internet? 😄 For what it's worth it's the third time I've had it since the pandemic began, all three times it's been no worse than a mild cold (albeit different symptoms each time).

Viruses are unpredictable, just because I had it very mildly doesn't mean it means it's a certain strain.

We all seem to have matching symptoms. There are three strains in the U.K. atm one is very unusual, you know when you have it. So no, I def don’t think you have this one. I don’t know a single person that would ever describe it as ‘mild’

Milkmaninthemist · 04/10/2023 06:12

I felt awful - high temperature and just everything hurt. It did pass quite quickly though so that was something. Previously when I had it I had a cough and that was it although I was vaccinated then.

Doublerainbow23 · 04/10/2023 07:26

Lastchancechica but that's just it, you don't know you've all had the "current strain" and I haven't. You're just guessing. An identical strain of flu can leave one person bedridden for weeks and another just have a runny nose. I'd imagine covid is no different.

Lastchancechica · 04/10/2023 07:42

That’s your view as someone who isn’t ill.

It is however correct, in terms of how this (and every other) pathogen acts in the body. The same virus can cause differing severity of illness

For example, polio was a mild illness for the majority. But we all remember how it caused severe, sometimes life-changing and sometimes fatal disease at random amongst those that caught it.

Covid is like that but as well as the risks of feeling rotten (and remember, everything short of hospitalisation is officially "mild") there are also the risks of long covid and impairment of a number of bodily systems.

medianewbie · 04/10/2023 08:57

This is my 3rd bout. 1st was right at the beginning & no tests available. Dd & I became ill. I recovered but she had long covid for nearly 2 yrs. GP totally dis-interested: 'you cant prove its covid' & gave her inhalers for ashma'. Eventually, at my insistence it was put in her notes as long covid. 2nd bout was 10 weeks ago. Barking cough for a whole month. 5 days ago Ds tested positive & has been quite ill. Yesterday tested positive. Banging headache (once had a spinal leak &, without meds, its like that, fortunatelyI have some very strong prescriptionmeds to hand or I couldn't type). Hot, cold, extremely ache I n bones, teeth, hair evem. Vomiting & crashing g fatigue. It's different to before, so new strain I think. I agree with all those who say we have NO CLUE what this will do to our bodies over the long term

Peterpiperspickledpepper · 04/10/2023 09:53

I’m not sure I’ve had Covid yet as not managed to test (will do today). Started on Friday and then got progressively worse, peaked on Sunday, and now definitely feel a bit better although tbh I haven’t really tried to do much. Supposed to be in work tomorrow on a 12 hour shift (crit care nurse) but don’t think I’ll be going in.
For me the symptoms were exactly like the Covid I had in Nov 2020 which kept me off work for 12 weeks. This then turned into long Covid and I had a huge relapse, off work for another 10 months. The sporadically high heart rate, wheezy chest, temp and just generally feeling wired were all exactly the same. This time however I’d had the booster probably 10 days before and definitely started improving on Monday. Funnily enough dp started with symptoms and although feeling absolutely dreadful he’s now on the mend too much more quickly. He was very sceptical when I said I thought it was Covid but after experiencing it himself actually admitted he now thought it was..

Does anyone know how long the immunity you get from an infection is?

Does anyone know how long the immunity you get from an infection is?

No, not really - probably around 6 months

But - there's more than one strain around, and if the new one doesn't "look" like the previous ones, it is likely to escape previous immunity rather better. And if you are unlucky enough to encounter that, even shortly after previous infection, you could come down with it twice in short order.

Plus of course, like many other pathogens, covid dampens your immune response for a period after the acute infection. Covid is rather good at this (several parts dysregulated) and the effect lasts longer than for others - can exceed 6 months.
Plus another way covid variants vary is with the ability to infect the body, meaning (either/both) you need a lower exposure to become ill, or a typical level of exposure makes you much more ill

Netcam · 04/10/2023 11:01

A friend of mine had it about a month ago fairly mildly at the same time my family all had it badly. She recovered and now has it again, probably a different strain, and it's much worse than last time.

Another symptom I’ve got is tooth and jaw ache. I don’t mean an individual tooth but it’s like my whole set of teeth are about to fall out! Has anyone else had this?

I had unbearable sinus pain when I had Covid recently. And a bit of toothache. I know toothache can be linked to sinus infection as I once went to the dentist with terrible toothache and was told there was nothing wrong with my teeth and was referred to the GP for antibiotics for a sinus infection, for which toothache is a symptom.
