Best way to find snails. Are they still around ibn October?

Hi

I need to go on a snail hunt later for a project I am doing in biology, but what’s the best way to find them? I've looked around under hedges etc in some grass but haven't really managed to spot any. Should I just give up?

Thanks

Underneath big leafy plants in my garden, sheltering under the leaves. Dahlias and the last of my Poppy especially.
There are also loads in and around my compost bin.

Lift up pots and behind pots. Failing that….put a chunk of cucumber or lettuce leaf out and go back out just before dusk with a headtorch. They’ll all be out then!

Thingsthatgo · 02/10/2023 18:34

I think I might have them ALL in my garden 😫

FeebasAquarium · 02/10/2023 18:37

I quite often find them in the glass recycling bin (we’ve got the crate style ones for glass) I think they’re eating the labels off the jars

DeathMetalMum · 02/10/2023 18:38

When I walked dc to school in the morning after it's rained or while it's raining there are often lots of snails around coming from hedges. They must prefer the moist ground. So go on a walk in the rain and look near hedges.

PlantDoctor · 02/10/2023 18:39

Go out at night, preferably after it rains. They should be everywhere! If not, look under plant pots or wood

SleepingStandingUp · 02/10/2023 18:41

Haha we must be on the same course.

I was lucky, lots of old stone walls round here and they come out after the rain.

Other than that, second trying to lure them with food. Not yellow and red balls of dough tho 🤣

HappyToSmile · 02/10/2023 18:42

Still plenty here!! As others have said, go out at night. Even better if it's dark And has rained!! If daylight, check the rims of pots - they seem to light being under cover tucked away!

MerryMarigold · 02/10/2023 19:15

Do they ever stop. I have gazillions. I think they live under the decking. They were after the cat food the other day (I put it outside as cat was being fussy and didn't was to come in).

Hedonism · 02/10/2023 19:16

There are lots on my sweet pea wigwam right now, you can have them all if you want.

midlifecrash · 02/10/2023 20:06

Put your bike outside with its cover on. At least 20 will be in the folds by morning.

ladypenelopesfan · 02/10/2023 20:08

That's because they are all in my garden eating the nasturtiums.

itsgettingweird · 02/10/2023 20:17

I walk along a sea wall (it's alongside a tidal lake type thing) every morning at 5am and it's dodge the snail!

So if you have somewhere like that?

healtywealthy · 02/10/2023 21:53

thanks all, I'm so surprised you are seeing so many! I'm probably not looking in damp enough places. @SleepingStandingUp yes I remember the dough balls :-)

I haven't looked at night or really early morning. My garden has long grass like its not been cut since a few months over the summer, do you think I would see any there?

I have hundreds in my compost

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 02/10/2023 22:07

Go outside and yell "Gary!". They'll come.

HereForTheFreeLunch · 02/10/2023 22:12

Saw one today going across my windscreen. It was bang in the middle half way across.

healtywealthy · 02/10/2023 22:13

@onetwothreeee I'm so jealous, I haven't even seen one. when I was younger I used to see lots of snails, they used to be everywhere but its been such a long time and I hav,e't seen one. My youngest said he's actually never ever seen a snail!!

@PelvicFloorClenchReminder I love Gary the snail!

MovingAnxiety · 02/10/2023 22:14

Have a look at night

YourWinter · 02/10/2023 22:16

There are dozens here as it’s been raining, I just crunched along the drive when I put the bins out…

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 02/10/2023 22:18

our drive is covered I felt like a serial killer just putting the bins out. I must have killed at least 7 underfoot in the dark 😔🙈

healtywealthy · 02/10/2023 22:21

wow I better get my torch then... I'll go early morning!!

Been raining here so just been out for a look - a few slugs and one little Gary - I took a photo for you 😁
This is on a roof terrace 80ft above ground - pisses me off that they manage to get up here!
