Hi

I need to go on a snail hunt later for a project I am doing in biology, but what’s the best way to find them? I've looked around under hedges etc in some grass but haven't really managed to spot any. Should I just give up?

Thanks

I’ve just gone to open my bedroom window for some fresh air and there’s a snail half way up the glass! If she makes her way inside during the night I’ll pop her in the post to you tomorrow.

They’re definitely gravitating towards the warmer spots of the garden. Loads in and around the compost bins and on the greenhouse glass.
You could put a saucer / tray of beer out covered in wire netting ( so they don’t drown) That should attract them.

Just sharing this for information on picking up snails. Very important!

We have a path called ´Snail Path here as it's full of snails after rain. Just go out for a walk in the rain.

That's a good tip about the snail shell 🐚 tapping @yaaarrrp

I didn't mean to add a shell emoji! Sorry

I can't see any in my garden, looked under longish grass. I looked in the afternoon around 4pm. Am I just looking at the wrong time?

@Mykittensmittens @FatFilledTrottyPuss @yaaarrrp I can't find snails! Should I just use the cucumber method? or go out at night? I don't know why I have a feeling they don't like my garden?

Which county are you in? If you’re near me you can have mine - I have so many!

can you join a very local fb group for gardening? I can guarantee some avid gardeners in your postcode can provide! I’ve just gone to the bin now at dusk and have seen at least 4.

Mykittensmittens · 03/10/2023 18:59

Cucumber now - near a flower bed. Go back in an hour or two, or 6am!

NonMiDispiace · 03/10/2023 19:10

Where are you? I can send you as many as you like, all different sizes, the buggers are everywhere.

healtywealthy · 04/10/2023 09:52

I'm in the W.Midlands Leicestershire

there are no flowers in my garden :-( so I may need to go to local park I think. Would they still be around in daytime hours? I can't go at night and too early morning for safety reasons.

In my DD's student flat. She is down in Exeter and when it rained heavily last week, she found several big bastards in her bathroom. They had come through the open window. It's a North facing, damp walk, with a balcony above, and an overflowing gutter. They are very happy snails.

JaneJeffer · 04/10/2023 12:07

What are you going to do when you find one?

healtywealthy · 06/10/2023 09:15

thanks. looking at the patterns recording some date for myself

I haven't seen a single snail or slug on my allotment all year!

Most peculiar.

healtywealthy · 02/10/2023 21:53

thanks all, I'm so surprised you are seeing so many! I'm probably not looking in damp enough places. @SleepingStandingUp yes I remember the dough balls :-)

I haven't looked at night or really early morning. My garden has long grass like its not been cut since a few months over the summer, do you think I would see any there?

There's more dough balls in this one too.

Hope you found some.

okay thanks, I'll PM you to discuss more about dough balls. No sight of a snail but DH has mentioned he sometimes sees in park as a rare sight.
