I absolutely detest my new job.

Properly hate it.

I’m not a crier, but have cried every day for about four days.

There’s too many cooks. One manager wants something done a certain way, another manger says no, they want it done a different way.

And there’s several examples of this. I really can’t please everyone.

I have one person working under me who only wants to smoke. All they want to do is go out for cigarettes. Their record is about 5 hours out of the 8 hour shift. And management are fine with it. But if something they were supposed to do isn’t done I get the blame.

I’m supposed to be doing paperwork, but I only have access to a shared PC which is in use during my quiet periods.

I stay behind most days to do stuff. I get messages on my days off about work stuff.

I’m waiting for the manager of another job to get back to me but she’s on leave for another week so I have to wait.

I have to leave in 45 minutes and go there.

There’s also very little natural light in the building which I think is making my depression worse.

My heart is full of dread. I just can’t stand it.

And yeah, no personal laptop. I have to bring my own from home and email the work to my work email address.

Probably best not tell the ICO about that.

weeseee · 01/10/2023 10:28

I do really putty you. I took a call centre job on full time when I got my little one off to school, previously I was working in a shop 16 hours a week and I loved it. Loved the staff, the customers and the job but figured I should look for a full time job that would get me out of weekends and evenings. I absolutely HATED it I cried every single day and I couldn't even enjoy the weekends off because I knew Monday was round the corner. I literally left with no job and in a real state because I literally couldn't afford to have no job but thankfully I walked into a wonderful job that I love. I often think back to that time and it makes me so depressed even thinking about it so I really really hope you get sorted xxxxx

I would expect getting you to use your personal computer for a role like that is a breach of gdpr as you will have to handle identifying information of people you are engaging, which they can't be sure is secure if it's on a random employee computer!

PimpMyFridge · 01/10/2023 10:33

I really hope you escape soon, sounds so ghastly

LizzieSiddal · 01/10/2023 08:26

I’ve been in a job like this you need self preservation.
Don’t take the chaos personally, you can’t control it, it’s other people’s mismanagement not you. Go in with a “I don’t give a shit, I’m leaving” attitude (obviously only in your head) and look for another job.

I really agree with this approach. You need to detach from the work and stop caring. Get looking for something new asap, employers won’t mind about the odd short term employment on your cv imo. Don’t work late. Good luck I hope it improves or you get something new soon.

Clearly they haven't provided any GDPR guidance to start with.

These are red flags that could be seen from space.

If you think the laptop thing is bad, we also have to use our personal phones.

I take photographs of vulnerable people and then take those photos home with me.

It’s shocking.

Bloody hell that’s dreadful. I’d refuse to do that on your personal phone. Do you have it in writing that you have to do that? If not you could get into trouble if the managers decide to throw you to the wolves.

We're never going to run out of reasons why this is a bad idea.

I'm sensing we are straying into criminal behaviour here. None of this is accidental, and "safeguarding" seems to be something other people are doing.

Make sure you don't lose your phone and force your company to report themselves the ICO.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/10/2023 12:26

What is ICO?

I might just report the company myself.

I’ve Googled them.

I’ll read properly later.

Our local Waterstones is looking for extra staff over Christmas. I can't think of anything better than working in a bookshop 💞

Christ on a bike!!!
They should be shut down or investigated for their practices at least!
Those vulnerable people deserve dignity and safety, and if they knew in what cavalier way they were being dealt with they'd be horrified!!!

PimpMyFridge · 01/10/2023 14:55

In your shoes I'd leave and report them to every possible body who could want to know, they should be ashamed.

Bringbackthetoddlers · 01/10/2023 16:27

God it's sounding worse and worse op! I'd go see your gp - tell them how awful this is and get signed off for a week to job hunt. Anything will be better than this! Sign up with an agency and get some work booked in, then start formally complaining/raising issues and report the arse out of the organisation you're working for.

I guess it's entirely up to you, whether you want to hang around and be a whistle-blower or not. I'd still like to think there'd be higher ups not knowing how bad it is and able to effect change, but I'm an eternal optimist!

It's really constructive dismissal. I hate how our society allows employers like these to grind good people into the ground. I wouldn't blame you if you didn't go in again, I don't think many decent people/future employers would either, if they knew what you were dealing with.

I'm certain if you spoke to your gp you'd get their support.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/10/2023 16:51

I’m starting to take my stuff home with me. Will be two journeys.

Today has been bearable. Tomorrow shouldn’t be too bad.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/10/2023 16:52

I’ve already reported them to CQC while I was chatting to you guys.

I filled in an online form.

Bringbackthetoddlers · 01/10/2023 16:58

Well done you OP 👏
I think many would just run away, but you've done the right thing. Hope that's helped to make you feel a bit more empowered in the situation. I'm sure you'll find something else where you'll be appreciated, you sound pretty employable to me and a bonus to any team!

SerendipityJane · 01/10/2023 17:01

OP may want this thread to be pulled. I'd trust no one to keep my details safe and a really unscrupulous employer might try for an application to get the OPs identity.

Bringbackthetoddlers · 01/10/2023 17:05

@SerendipityJane that's probably and sadly a good idea. Anyone got any tips of where @TheLightSideOfTheMoon can go to get support and advice before pulling the thread?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/10/2023 17:52

I haven’t given enough details for this to be identifying.

I could be anywhere.

And plenty of people detest their jobs.

I am putting in my notice today, I cannot work at my place any longer. I don't have a job to go to but I broke down to my husband last week and he said quit the job. No job should be affecting someone's mental health. I have been up since 4 this morning, I can't sleep and I am getting physical symptoms of anxiety.

Good luck OP

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 02/10/2023 08:21

Same. I need to leave in ten minutes and I’m sitting here in my pants and slippers.

Have applied for a few more jobs.

This sucks. I wish I could afford to leave.

parameciumparty · 02/10/2023 09:15

How much do you need to earn? Could you try to get a cleaning/factory/shop job via an agency? Can you drive? There's always delivery jobs being advertised.

Bringbackthetoddlers · 02/10/2023 13:09

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon and @fragglegaggle, if it's causing symptoms of stress would signing off sick buy you a bit more time and breathing space, if you'd get sick pay?
Can understand not wanting to though.
