I absolutely detest my new job.

Properly hate it.

I’m not a crier, but have cried every day for about four days.

There’s too many cooks. One manager wants something done a certain way, another manger says no, they want it done a different way.

And there’s several examples of this. I really can’t please everyone.

I have one person working under me who only wants to smoke. All they want to do is go out for cigarettes. Their record is about 5 hours out of the 8 hour shift. And management are fine with it. But if something they were supposed to do isn’t done I get the blame.

I’m supposed to be doing paperwork, but I only have access to a shared PC which is in use during my quiet periods.

I stay behind most days to do stuff. I get messages on my days off about work stuff.

I’m waiting for the manager of another job to get back to me but she’s on leave for another week so I have to wait.

I have to leave in 45 minutes and go there.

There’s also very little natural light in the building which I think is making my depression worse.

My heart is full of dread. I just can’t stand it.

It sounds chaotic. Talk to your manager and then leave if issues aren’t resolved.

Dolphinnoises · 01/10/2023 07:57

That sounds awful. What are your circumstances? Could your household deal with a period of unemployment? Why did you leave your last job?

PimpMyFridge · 01/10/2023 07:58

Nightmare. What happens if you tell them what you've told us?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/10/2023 08:06

I’ve told one of the managers who was very sympathetic but she’s not based at my location so there’s little she can do.

The smoking I can’t do anything about as my colleague is very friendly with the management.

I left last job due to bullying and it’s since closed.

If this other job is available then I will leave. I’m still in probation period so only need to give a week’s notice.

Your choices boil down to leave immediately or stay for 1 year/ 18 months ( for your cv). I was in this situation (chaotic manager, awful team, skiving juniors), I stayed for 18 months as it was my first job post career gap/maternity leave and I needed to stay for my cv.

It nearly broke me mentally and took 2 years to recover, mentally, so nearly 4 years of dread and anxiety. Now I am in a good place (mentally and career), but I don’t think it was worth it.

i am still in contact with someone from the company, who keeps me updated. The team is still exactly the same 5 years later. Nothing changed. I would advocate leaving immediately.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/10/2023 08:08

I’m supposed to be in charge of community engagement and it’s a big part of my job.

But one manager will say yes to something and then another manager will say no.

It’s a headache.

My predecessor left due to depression and I can see why.

OP posts:
TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/10/2023 08:09

And no, I can’t afford to be unemployed.

I can only leave once another job is confirmed.

TryAgainWithFeeling · 01/10/2023 08:12

I’m four months in to a new job which is totally not what I thought it was going to be, I’m really struggling. Culture is utterly useless, I don’t think anyone’s made a proper decision in the last ten years, which means no one achieves anything and the same mistakes get made over and over and over... I’m looking around for something else, difficult because I need quite specific hours. So, you have my sympathy and please know you’re not alone! I hope the other job works out for you.

Bringbackthetoddlers · 01/10/2023 08:15

Can you reduce your hours/book some leave and job hunt like crazy? Keep the nice manager on board to use as a referee if you can. Can you sign up for agency work as a back up, then be really honest in writing about the issues you're having? It might be that higher ups are aware of issues but not the extent.

YukoandHiro · 01/10/2023 08:15

Make it your focus to leave. Keep applying for jobs. You don't have to put this job on your CV when applying if you've only just started.

It sounds awful, don't stay. You will either become very mentally unwell or acclimatised, which may in fact be worse.

Startingagainandagain · 01/10/2023 08:15

OP, have you tried signing up with agencies/look for temp jobs as well while you look for another permanent role?

Your current job sounds awful and it is not going to improve as the company just sounds chaotic.

I would leave as soon as possible and leave this job out of your CV all together.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/10/2023 08:20

Chaotic is the right word.

But a big chunk of it is the smoking. I can get my colleague to commit to anything. We’ll be halfway through a conversation and she’ll have to go outside.

It’s really hard.

She’s not actually there today but will be tomorrow.

I have to leave in 11 minutes and I just want to cry.

LizzieSiddal · 01/10/2023 08:26

I’ve been in a job like this you need self preservation.
Don’t take the chaos personally, you can’t control it, it’s other people’s mismanagement not you. Go in with a “I don’t give a shit, I’m leaving” attitude (obviously only in your head) and look for another job.

shiftshock · 01/10/2023 08:28

So sorry OP am in the same boat about to give notice on a job I only started a month ago. Agree with others, could you leave and temp till another role comes through.

SunshineDaisiesButterMellowxx · 01/10/2023 08:28

For the sake of your mental health, get out!!! Get out now!!
Easier said than done, but its not worth putting yourself through it. Things have a way of falling into place. Dont destroy your happiness for a job.💐

Oblomov23 · 01/10/2023 08:29

In the meantime, Have you actually reported all this to your Direct Line Manager? Please do.

LizzieSiddal · 01/10/2023 08:30

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon

If it helps today, keep posting (if you can) and people can check in and see how you’re doing. We’re all behind you!

cheezncrackers · 01/10/2023 08:43

If you're still in your probation period and you can afford to leave (i.e. you can pay your bills if you give one week's notice and then leave), I'd leave immediately. I had a horrible job straight out of uni - it too left me in tears. The salary was low, the hours insane (all nighters expected as part of the job and if you baulked at them then you just weren't committed enough). Ugh! I couldn't get out of there fast enough. No job is worth wrecking your MH for OP.

Changingplace · 01/10/2023 08:46

I feel your pain, I started a new job in May and feel like it was completely missold to me, I hate it :(

I’m looking for something new, actually couldn’t care less how it looks on my CV!

SpongeBobSquarePantaloons · 01/10/2023 08:47

Oh my god. Quit. Life's too short for that bollocks.

Bringbackthetoddlers · 01/10/2023 08:54

Like pp asked - what happens if you tell this colleague the effect their frequent breaks are having on you? Can you ask them to make up the time they spend outside?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/10/2023 08:54

I really can’t afford to just quit. Seriously.

If I get the go-head from the other job I will quit straight away.

I’m here.

The only person I’ve seen so far looks as grumpy as I am.

OP posts:
TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/10/2023 08:56

I am going to start taking personal items home today…

OP posts:
TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/10/2023 08:58

The smoker won’t care.

They’ve probably always been allowed as many breaks as they like and won’t change for me.

It’s easier for me to move on. Besides, the smoking is only part of the problem. If they stopped smoking I’d have the same shit but with a resentful colleague.

GallowsHumous · 01/10/2023 09:00

Do you get full pay for a week of sickness absence? If so I would do that while you wait on the other job and use the time off to look for other jobs as back up. If you get the job you mentioned you then go back only to work your 1 week notice. If not you go back hopefully a bit refreshed and better able to deal with the situation with more potential new jobs on the horizon.

Your mental health sounds very poor at this point so being off sick is in no way a piss take it's a genuine case of depression and it's been caused by your employer.
