What was a weird dream you had as a kid?

I've been reminded tonight of this weird recurring dream I used to have. Interesting how I used to have recurring dreams as a very young kid but not any more up until very recently (so about a 30 year gap) and that is to do with a bereavement, so possibly a bit of trauma involved there.

Anyway, occasionally I used to have this dream up until about the age of 5/6 where I would be dreaming about something random but then this cartoon ghost that was a grandma used to appear in my dreams and she would scare the absolute shite out of me (she didn't do anything just the fact that she was there would signify something bad). And nothing else in my dream was in a cartoon so I would be dreaming about normal people situations then this random 2D character would just appear and I would need to get out of there ASAP. Not long after I proudly mastered the art of being able to wake myself up from a bad dream by realizing and concentrating really hard. I hardly ever ever have bad dreams anymore and if I do they are nowhere near as freaky as the ones I had when I was a kid.

I’m absolutely convinced I use to float/fly down the stairs. I’m sure I’d pass a polygraph test, it’s honestly never occurred to me that it may have been a dream. Obviously I know it didn’t happen.

Same here. Daughter too.

I had this dream where two skyscrapers behind us were collapsing, bits crumbling off from the tops, everyone knew they were going to come crashing down, everyone was panicking and running away, like in a movie - I was with my little brother, and I was trying to shield him as we ran away, glancing back at the burning, smoking, crumbling skyscrapers.

Same!

Everything was made of snakes. I vividly recall my dad wearing a tank top (this was the 70s 😆) made up of snakes. They were all coiling around him.

A naked woman sleeping under a tree. I go to wake her and realise she's dead. I must have been about 5 when I dreamt that but it's always stuck with me.

I genuinely used to have a recurring nightmare about Paul Shane shouting at me. I've been really afraid of Paul Shane my whole life as a result.

I used to repeatedly dream about a scary man trying to get to me in my house. I always hid behind the sofa. I tried to scream but no sound came out and I couldn’t run as my legs wouldn’t move properly. Had that dream so often. Weird though that I haven’t had recurring dreams as an adult. (Except for the very common public toilet dream where you can’t find a suitable cubicle to use. I get that one occasionally when I’m anxious about something).

The floating/flying downstairs memory/dream is really common. I remember it being discussed on MN several times before. I don’t think I have that particular one but lots of people do. One MNer therorised that it’s because we remember being carried down the stairs when we were very little.

Another dream I used to have as a small child was my mum suddenly walking away from me and up a long, steep hill. I couldn't catch up with her and I remember the feeling of utter panic 😕

OMG I used to have this same dream but with my mum walking off in the Supermarket 😭

The worst dream I can remember is that the Ku Klux Klan were in our living room and I was hiding behind the sofa terrified of all those people in those white hooded robes, it was terrifying and can still remember it clearly to this day that nightmare and I am in my early 50's. I must have seen something on the tv as a child that should not have seen. Your dream sounds lovely at 1st and then terrifying also.

It's actually really weird to have a cartoon pop up in your dream amongst everything else appearing normally.

Such an interesting thread - I didn’t know it was possible to have different dreams until I was about 7 or 8, I always had the same one every night and assumed everyone was allocated one dream to have when they slept. Mine was my mum and my brother getting into the car we had at the time and driving away, with me chasing them. Doesn’t need a huge amount of analysis, but I’m kind of cross I had to dream it for so many years until I had a different one, and I was absolutely gobsmacked there were alternatives!!

A man in a raincoat standing on the landing outside my bedroom, looking in 😬. Had that dream many times, and thought it was real

Do you listen to the BBC podcast Uncanny. If not then please do so, but start with the most recent one The Blue Man.
