What was a weird dream you had as a kid?

I've been reminded tonight of this weird recurring dream I used to have. Interesting how I used to have recurring dreams as a very young kid but not any more up until very recently (so about a 30 year gap) and that is to do with a bereavement, so possibly a bit of trauma involved there.

Anyway, occasionally I used to have this dream up until about the age of 5/6 where I would be dreaming about something random but then this cartoon ghost that was a grandma used to appear in my dreams and she would scare the absolute shite out of me (she didn't do anything just the fact that she was there would signify something bad). And nothing else in my dream was in a cartoon so I would be dreaming about normal people situations then this random 2D character would just appear and I would need to get out of there ASAP. Not long after I proudly mastered the art of being able to wake myself up from a bad dream by realizing and concentrating really hard. I hardly ever ever have bad dreams anymore and if I do they are nowhere near as freaky as the ones I had when I was a kid.

My best friend got taken away by pancakes on their spaceship lolGrin

Sodie · 30/09/2023 22:59

As a child and into my late teens I had a recurring dream weekly, since then it's maybe twice a year. It was just these identical twin women in their forties sat on a bench in a park by the entrance to a woods. It was a real bench and park on a certain rough estate in Pembrokeshire. Nothing was ever said the dream was just them sat there.

Recurring dream about being chased by a vacuum cleaner.
My mum was always hoovering.

Sandysandwich · 30/09/2023 23:06

I used to have the same dream a lot as a child, and It always started the same- having to walk down to the kitchen where there would be toast on a plate and the walls and tablecloth and curtains were all yellow. I remember being annoyed in the dream, that it was this one again as it was always the same.

The toast would start to get burnt on its own on the plate until it just crumbled, a lady in a yellow apron would pick up the plate and drop the burnt crumbs on the floor. The crumbs would burn through the floor and there was weird tunnels underneath. She would make me get in and I'd spend the rest of the dream walking/crawling/falling through various tunnels, like underground train tunnels, air vents, plastic play tunnels, those glass aquarium tunnels where you can see fish, a tube made of ham etc.
They were often full of weird stuff like cacti or confetti or pencils and sometimes someone was chasing me but I never saw who. There were often people in there and they either followed me or were crying because they were lost.
I would always fall through the final door and then wake up. The tunnels were different every dream but the rest was the same.

My mum said I talked about it at least once a week for years and then stopped and it never happened again. It was the weirdest shit, I remember some of them so clearly.

Good to know the twins from the Shining found later work..

I used to dream that my teeth were falling out. It would start out with a wobbly one then the next thing I'm spitting them out like they are tic tacs.

Then more recently just loads of gunk in my mouth like cooked mince or something really grainy that I'm trying to spit out but my mouth keeps making more of it

Dreams are so weird. There are places I go in my dreams that I have never been in real life but I have been visiting since I was a child in my dreams.

Were you anxious or suffered from anxiety?

Montyman1 · 30/09/2023 23:14

I used to dream that I was in this particular house on the road into town, to which I had zero connection whatsoever, just knew it from passing in the car. In the house I would be trapped in a room with pictures of Michael Jackson covering all of the walls (thriller era) while cowering in a corner because he was in the room too and I was hiding from him 🤷‍♀️

whatchagonnado · 30/09/2023 23:16

Getting chased by an ostrich round Loch Ness. Think I'd been watching Rod Hull and Emu that day. It was very vivid Grin

Cazaletto · 30/09/2023 23:19

Yeah, bloody wolves popped into my dreams ALL the time as a child. Often waiting at bus stops with me, or just generally out to get me.

The other one was being in the driving seat of a moving car, often with siblings in the back, with no clue how to steer or stop it. This dream completely vanished when I learnt to drive 😁

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 30/09/2023 23:21

I used to dream me and my grandad were running along the street to the funeral parlour where his was taken after he died. We were stressed about being late. I was only 8 when he died and he was the 3rd of my grandparents to die between 5 and 8.

The dream used to recur when I got stressed for a long time and I guess it’s were I get my hatred of being late from.

NumberFortyNorhamGardens · 30/09/2023 23:21

I used to have a lot of ‘being chased by monsters’ dreams, and ones where I was doing exams but couldn’t read the paper because the words kept floating away. I reckon the first one’s a basic ‘prey’ dream hardwired into us and the second is an anxiety dream.

More weirdly, I used to have a horrible nightmare about what I can only describe as abstract geometric patterns - it was utterly incomprehensible and all the more scary for it. I wonder if I was terrified by some film sequence or other when I was very small? Dr Who or the Death Star or something?

And like a PP, I would have nightmares about moving cars, mainly with me in the back and no driver in the driver’s seat. It’s fairly obvious as symbolism but might also have been influenced by films like Christine.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 30/09/2023 23:22

The worst dream I can remember is that the Ku Klux Klan were in our living room and I was hiding behind the sofa terrified of all those people in those white hooded robes, it was terrifying and can still remember it clearly to this day that nightmare and I am in my early 50's. I must have seen something on the tv as a child that should not have seen. Your dream sounds lovely at 1st and then terrifying also.

Onlywedressbetter · 30/09/2023 23:38

When I was around 7 or 8 years old i started to have terrifying dreams of just a black void, like space, then blocks or something like that would appear, a bit like tetris, but this was way before the game in the late 1970s, it sounds like nothing but I used to wake up screaming. It carries on to this day, but much less frequent.

SausageinaBun · 30/09/2023 23:56

I used to get really bad dreams if I had a fever and would also sleepwalk. A recurring one when i was young was that I was on a crowded Jubilee line train and everyone was speaking French really fast backwards. When I was a bit oldrr and had flu, I had a dream that made me run in my sleep to my dad and tell him he needed to turn round every atom in the universe.

A better, but really bizarre dream was that i was made of brie (a bit linke Morph) and someone was using a paint roller to put the white coating on me.

TeenMum87 · 01/10/2023 00:02

I’m absolutely convinced I use to float/fly down the stairs. I’m sure I’d pass a polygraph test, it’s honestly never occurred to me that it may have been a dream. Obviously I know it didn’t happen.

When I was about 3 yrs old, I used to have really vivid nightmares about Feathers Mcgraw from Wallace and gromit.

The nightmare was always the same, even when I moved house.

He would scurry into my room and I'd hide under the blanket and try not to breathe loud,
I would hear his creepy little penguin feet slip slapping as he walked around my bed
then he would drag my mattress with me on it , down the stairs and leave me outside.
I remember feeling the change of temperature going from a warm bedroom to cold and windy outside,
and I remember seeing streetlights as I peeked from underneath the blanket.

I would be paralysed lying there on the grass outside, for what felt like hours,
usually when I was brave enough to come out from under the blanket,
feathers would be gone
but there was one time I saw him staring back at me with his beady little eyes, terrifying

This dream happened quite a lot to the point where I remember 3 yr old me thinking "oh no not again" when feathers would come into my room
Never understood why he kept leaving me outside..

I had another bad nightmare, a few years ago that has stuck with me

I was in an aeroplane and it started nose diving,
everyone started screaming and praying.

The lights of the aeroplane flickered off and then
I felt the sensation of falling through the air , like when you're going down on a roller coaster
The plane broke in to two pieces and I caught fire,
I felt very hot and suffocated, I could smell burnt hair and smokiness and just as I'm about to hit the floor,
I woke up with my heart racing, sweating and screaming,
I even got up and ran around the house because I was convinced something must be burning for real

here's a picture of feathers for everyone to enjoy

Marinettethebug · 01/10/2023 00:34

My weirdest dream was one that progressed over the course of three nights. We were on a family hike and one by one, my brothers and I got snatched by a kidnapper who proceeded to march us to their lair. On the 3rd night, we arrived at the lair which was the feed shed near the horse yards on our farm. So I just ran inside to get my parents and the dream ended. Very anticlimactic haha.

Another was a recurring dream where my brothers and I were in the backseat of the car and mum was driving. Suddenly she would disappear and I would have to clamber into the front seat and take over driving. Everything would turn blue at that point too. Very strange. Eventually after hair-raising drive, I would pull up in front of a shop and mum would walk out and hop back in the car.

If you haven't figured it out I am an oldest child who used to worry about how I would take care of my brothers if our parents died.

I do actually believe I may have had a past life.
I had constant horrid drowning on an ice lake dreams as a child. Seemed like London or UK large city early 1900s. I love heat and have breathing problems since I was born.
Don't have the dreams anymore, since about 9, but do believe it was trauma presenting until I settled here.
In other ways I'm v scientific but those feelings as a small child, shivers.

I was trapped in the TV after the test card. There would be lots of other people. The others were invisible but i could hear them whispering.

Bloody hell

ShutTheDoorBabe · 01/10/2023 01:13

That there were aliens coming in spaceships shaped like flying saucers, hovering over the houses. It could sense children and if they were close enough, they'd beam them up into their ship. I was babysitting and hid with the children in the cellar underneath the house.

I must've been listening to the war of the worlds!

SiobhanSharpe · 01/10/2023 01:23

We lived in the Middle East. I used to have a recurring dream that my mother and i were in a convertible type car driving through the desert at night.
I can clearly see it even now. It was a very bright moonlit night, my mum was driving the car and a wolf suddenly leaped onto the car bonnet and started attacking her. I was terrified but she just laughed. Weird.
(And i don't want to analyse it, thanks. )
There were actually wolves in the north of the country at the time, I believe.

I had this quite a few times and can remember the feeling v clearly. I really do still think I was awake though. Yes I know that defies logic and sounds batshit!

The last time it happened, I remember floating down and walking into the kitchen. I casually mentioned to my mum how I liked the floating feeling that sometimes happened. It was only when she asked what I meant that I realised it didn't happen to everyone sometimes - I'd never really thought about it, just accepted it. She asked me to show her and I tried and tried, but obviously couldn't float! Never happened again.

There was a really long thread on here recently dedicated to the flying dream as child

Dogon · 01/10/2023 02:34

Flying down the stairs or levitating above the bed.
Also once dreamt that a vampire was after me as I walked in our street!

Jewelanemone · 01/10/2023 08:02

Another dream I used to have as a small child was my mum suddenly walking away from me and up a long, steep hill. I couldn't catch up with her and I remember the feeling of utter panic 😕
