I saw something out of the ordinary today…

I heard high pitched squeaking as I walked to my car and saw a magpie drop a live mouse on the pavement and then peck at it. I didn’t know magpies could catch mice.

What did you see today that you weren’t expecting?

Magpies are just awful. I’ve seen them go after each other, lambs, dying bunnies etc

Cherryana · 30/09/2023 21:30

I saw Matilda the musical.
Although I was expecting to because I bought a ticket.

It was phenomenal though.

My tortoise in the main bathroom, no idea how she got out!

SlippinJanie · 30/09/2023 21:43

A hen at the back door looking like she wanted to know if we were coming out to play.

Grim. I thought they ate carrion, not living things.

@boatyardblues If they think it’s on its way out they’ll have a go.

lljkk · 30/09/2023 21:47

the other day I saw a magpie hopping back and forth between heads of 2 cows, pecking at the flies bothering each cow. Magpie was taking turns perching on each cow's head pecking at the flies. Cows obviously very cooperative. Like any African wildlife video. I wondered if flies for magpies were like raisins to me (small tasty items).

Hummusanddipdip · 30/09/2023 21:49

I did not know that about magpies, i do know theyre evil fuckers though - crows are just as bad!

I watched dh bake and decorate a cake with ds today - not necessarily unusual except...

Dh has never baked a cake in his life, but ds said he'd like to make a cake today with daddy specifically. Dh asked me to write a list and off they went to the shop, bought everything, I showed him the best recipe to use, they followed it and made a lovely vanilla sponge decorated with vanilla icing and animal biscuits...

They're now doing bedtime in a teepee in mine and dh bedroom. I've had a lovely day cleaning bathrooms/bedrooms, the livingroom and doing washing while they've baked and built 🤣 it's been lovely hearing them and better yet, they cleaned and washed up after themselves! So the kitchen doesn't need cleaning this weekend (usually dh and I share cleaning on saturdays anyway, but today they had a daddy and son day)

A really brightly coloured caterpillar with loads of yellow spikes and a spike at the end of its body. Haven’t seen a caterpillar since childhood.

Keeping with the bird theme, I was walking down an alleyway between back gardens and someone threw a dead pigeon at me... they didn't mean to, they were chucking it into the alleyway away from their dog... I was just unlucky to get in the way I guess.
(They did apologise)

That's what my husband said when I told him about it!

icebearforpresident · 30/09/2023 22:05

A bird which may or may not have been a crow grabbing something that may or may not have been a sparrow and flying off with it.

Incase you can’t tell, I know bugger all about birds, but I have a big garden and in the summer can have lots of birds on the grass. Whatever the grabbing bird was, it was a typical garden bird, not anything like a hawk or bird of prey. I had no idea they would go for each other like that.

Tilllly · 30/09/2023 22:07

Apparently they've been known to peck out hedgehogs eyes...

Vinorosso74 · 30/09/2023 22:10

I noticed a hole had been dug in our garden, probably by a fox overnight. Happens every so often. However, this time there was an empty baked bean tin left in the hole.

Tortoises are Houdini's. They are amazing 🤩

Hipp0campus · 30/09/2023 22:21

Just posting to say magpies are incredibly emotional birds and can be very cruel.
One of the cats killed one a while ago and hid it's body behind the fence. Couldn't figure out why we had 5-9 magpies hovering around the garden for weeks being very noisy.
Turns out they hold funerals for their deceased ones, even bringing the corpse gifts. They've been witnessed mourning.

I saw - and heard - at least 8 skeins of geese flying over our house today. That's autumn properly begun, when the overwintering geese arrive!

Perfect! This is nicely random. 😄

43ontherocksporfavor - I saw a caterpillar like that last week, I googled and it was a Tussock moth.

Mumaway · 30/09/2023 22:31

We saw a hawk catch a fairly sizeable rabbit, and then drop it. Unfortunately for the poor rabbit he landed on a poky branch straight through his eye socket. Probably quicker than waiting for the hawk to see him off though.

boatyardblues · 30/09/2023 22:31

The magpie vigil would freak me out.

" My" squirell that comes to my garden every morning chasing an empty plastic bag that was blowing in the wind.
