I saw something out of the ordinary today…

I heard high pitched squeaking as I walked to my car and saw a magpie drop a live mouse on the pavement and then peck at it. I didn’t know magpies could catch mice.

What did you see today that you weren’t expecting?

We saw a pale tussock moth caterpillar on our walk today. It was heading towards the road so dh popped it onto a grass verge.

I saw - and heard - at least 8 skeins of geese flying over our house today. That's autumn properly begun, when the overwintering geese arrive!

Fab, that's another round of bird-flu on the way

My son (11) got out the chess set, roundly beat his dad, and informed us he's been playing every day at school for months.

Nobody has ever beaten DH before 😆

Oh, he should've kept quiet about learning at school! You would have both thought he was a natural genius.

Magpies are just awful. I’ve seen them go after each other, lambs, dying bunnies etc

Alternatively they're just animals trying to eat enough to survive.

coxesorangepippin · 01/10/2023 01:13

Saw a black and yellow adder

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 01/10/2023 01:23

Lots of Magpies and Crows in my garden. Love watching them play. Really cheeky, intelligent birds, and their capers are great entertainment.

Can't understand how people can get all het up about animals eating other animals. Are they supposed to go vegan so they don't offend your sensibilities and politics or something?

ohsuzannah · 01/10/2023 02:34

I watched a red kite grabbing a starling from its flock. The starling was screeching and the flock dive bombing the kite, but then he dropped to the ground. Nature is cruel!

I saw a young New Holland Honeyeater pestering its parents for food while they were all perched on the veranda roof. Never seen a young one before!

Jesus. How about a trigger warning in the title?!?

givemeasunnyday · 01/10/2023 05:02

A small dog in my living room! It was visiting one of the other flats and decided to take a stroll and wander in my open front door.

Oh brilliant!! How did DH take it? 😁

Ooh you just reminded me of a funny moment from years ago. I was talking to my psychologist and the talk strayed to matters spiritual; I mentioned the feeling that my departed DCat had visited me at home. Afterward, psychologist had to get some paperwork, and while he was out a random cat wandered in (the clinic was in a block of flats) and settled down on my lap. Psychologist nearly jumped out of his skin when he came back and saw that! 😆

One of my cats does that

Neighbours go upstairs and find him having a lip on the bed!

Me too!! I was at an Open Garden and saw an adult one rummaging about in the mulch, which surprised me as I'd thought it would have been in the beautiful grevillea above.

They're such striking little birds, aren't they?

The thread has taken a darker turn than I’d expected, though I set the tone with my initial enevdote. 🤦‍♀️ Give it a couple more pages and we may see the balance shift to the more uplifting chess playing 11 year olds and chickens at the petrol station. 🤞

Magpies gang up and raid birds nests killing the chicks. They are monsters. I would go out and shoot them if my neighbours wouldn't report me but I think someone would.

Got Chris packham and similar other bleeding hearts to thank for that. These birds should be classed as vermin

A crow brings me gifts, ( I leave a bowl of water out for any passing bird) I was sitting outside in the sun and dropped a piece of apple on the ground one day, he was sat on the fence and hopped down for the apple, took it back to the fence to eat it and came back for a drink. I did the same the following few days. Noticed him sat in his usual place with something in his beak. He flew down, dropped a stone on the patio then pushed it towards me with his beak. He leaves stones, a cherry pip once and other little oddments. I googled it and apparently they do this and he’s bonded with me.

@Daffodilsandtuplips

Jackdaws leave shiny gifts for me on the bird table in exchange for the food I put out. It's usually just random bits of scrap metal, but it's endearing nonetheless, and it makes me wonder where they find it all. 😀

I love this! So clever.

I’ve seen a magpie fight to the death with a squirrel. The magpie won. It was relentless. I don’t like them very much.

Tilllly · 01/10/2023 08:05

I have 2 bird baths and 4 feeders, and the ungrateful sods never bring me gifts

Petrine · 01/10/2023 08:08

A really large dead seal on the rocks. It looked ready to explode! I’m hoping the tide will take it out to sea.

What the bloody hell do you need a trigger warning for ?

Swans causing a major holdup on Friday. We have an abundance of swans locally but they don't generally stroll along the roads, calm as you like.
