Who is the best actor?

Right.

I absolutely ADORE Tom Hanks. Utterly adore him. I think he's an absolutely incredible actor and I've seen most of his films. Ironically not Forrest Gump. But he's just fantastic and seems like a really nice person too. He shits glitter as far as I'm concerned.

But also Leonardo DiCaprio. Look up What's Eating Gilbert Grape. I don't understand how he never won an Oscar for that shit. Same with his withdrawal scene in Basketball Diaries. Fuck me.

Many others I'm sure. But WHO stands out for you?

I think all the actors named here so far are fab. Leo DiCaprio is probably the best of his generation IMO. He is brilliant in most stuff he does. I LOVE Tom Hanks too @BridgetJonesAsFuck He is not overrated!

Stephen Graham is great too. Also Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman (God rest his soul,) and Johnny Depp. Also Jamie Foxx and Will Smith are good. And Eddie Murphy and Jim Carrey are good too. More than just funny guys. Robin Williams was wonderful too. (God rest his soul too.) Also Ray Winstone.

So many good actresses too, but this thread is about actors. Smile

Mark Rylance, Alan Rickman, Leonardo di Caprio, Anthony Hopkins, Rutger Hauer. Couldn’t not mention actresses too - Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith.

BrandyandGinger · 30/09/2023 20:36

Anthony Hopkins. He was so sympathetic in Shadowlands and The Father and so menacing in The Silence of the Lambs.

Butterkist8 · 30/09/2023 20:37

Richard Burton.

Peter O'Toole .

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 30/09/2023 20:44

I know Nicolas Cage gets a lot of stick but he has been my favourite living actor since 2015 (when previous incumbent died),

Namechange20100 · 30/09/2023 20:48

Another one for Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy and Michael Sheen.

K1nga23 · 30/09/2023 20:53

Christoph Waltz is amazing though not that well known

BearSoFair · 30/09/2023 20:56

Mads Mikkelsen
Cillian Murphy

And in a different way but I can't quite explain how, David Tennant

ShinyPikachu · 30/09/2023 20:58

I came here to say James McAvoy and especially in Split as well. That was just something else. I loved him in The Last King of Scotland and Atonement too.

PrimalOwl10 · 30/09/2023 20:58

Robin Williams he's movies always left an ever lasting imprint that you don't get many actors like that. From the awakenings, jumanji, Mrs doubtfire, good will hunting.

Agree that Christoph Waltz is amazing, but Gary Oldman is a terrible over actor imo, and very over rated.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 30/09/2023 21:03

Alec Guinness.
Kind Hearts and Coronets is a great illustration of the variety of parts he could play.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 30/09/2023 21:06

Just rewatched The Forsyth Saga and Damian Lewis is extraordinary.

sadaboutmycat · 30/09/2023 21:13

Jason Watkins is one of the finest actors I know. Also Anthony Hopkins, and definitely Alan Rickman
Jason Watkins in The Lost Honour of Christopher Jeffries is Oscar worthy.

Eebygumball · 30/09/2023 21:18

Tom Hardy, very versatile even though he likes to play the baddies.

Mel Gibson in his younger days - the likes of Tim, Man Without a Face etc.

Leo - again, his older stuff is amazing, he can sometimes overact though.

Robin Williams, I felt so sad when he died.

IAmcuriousyellow · 30/09/2023 21:18

I love Tom Hanks since I saw him in Captain Phillips (incredible, edge of your seat movie) and It’s A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood. For a while I wanted him to be my dad as I had a shit dad and I just love his face but that all went west when I found out he’s younger than me haha

if you haven’t seen beautiful day in the neighbourhood you’re in for a treat

Boopeedoop · 30/09/2023 21:21

Morgan Freeman
Robin Williams
Joaquin Phoenix

IAmcuriousyellow · 30/09/2023 21:23

Somebody above mentioned Barry Keoghan - check him out in Top Boy

he broke my heart in Banshees! But there’s more to him than that, he does good villain too

Jason Watkins is superb.

DwightShrute · 30/09/2023 21:31

Agree with Leo but not Tom Hanks.
Joaquin Phoenix
Denzel Washington
Pacino and De Niro
Johnny Depp
Brad Pitt

Much as I like Tom Hanks, he was pretty rubbish in Elvis I thought

I didn't even know it was Tom Hanks until I'd watched half the movie so I disagree

BlueKaftan · 30/09/2023 21:32

Gary Oldman
James Spader
Daniel Craig
Maggie Smith especially early work
David Suchet

BlueKaftan · 30/09/2023 21:35

Ralph Feinnes
Jean Smart
Martin Short
My cat

Thedrownedprophet · 30/09/2023 21:36

Daniel Kayuula is outstanding. Just watched Judas and the Black Messiah, and he was unreal.

GigiAnnna · 30/09/2023 21:37

Evan Peters. He is believable in everything I've seen him in, versatile and also sexy as hell. What's not to like.
