The sycamore chopped down at Hadrian's wall

What a fucking horrible thing to do.
It must've taken a lot of effort to cut that tree down, and for what? To do something horrible for the sake of doing something horrible?

Why why why cut down a 200yr old tree? :(

Northumberland is very rural and there are vast expanses of moorland- much bigger than where Sycamore Gap is. However, Sycamore Gap is very quiet and there are no buildings /villages nearby. It was a windy night. No one would have heard anything.

A 16 year old who knows how to use a chain saw (any many will who live in rural Northumberland) could take down a tree very quickly, particularly if the wind was in the right direction. A quad bike or trail motorbike would get them there easily. There'd be no traffic on those roads at night- there's not much during the day. I visited a cousin on the outskirts of a tiny village called Newton, near there, a couple of weeks ago and driving home I didn't see another car until I got back to Brockbushes roundabout on A69- I drive about a mile down a one car overgrown lane wondering what I'd do if I met a vehicle coming the other way but I didn't.

Sycamore Gap isn't next to a lane or a road. It is in quite a steep drop of the Roman Wall. He will have driven across fields to get to it.

People seem to have no notion of what the area is like.

Oh lord, you're one of those people who think "life should mean life" and chuck everyone on prison for 25 years no matter the crime.

Imagine being put in prison until you die because you cut down a tree... what would you then do with the murderers and rapists?

No they won’t get a sentence.. cos it’ll be some cushy rehabilitation programme no doubt and the blame will be on the upbringing yada yada

Of course they won’t get any sentence. Nor indeed a telling off. It’ll be as I said: a rehabilitation programme..

I hope. Sincerely hope. Karma will get them and will follow them. For always.

It is disgusting what they have done and I am furious and sad in equal measure . I am also astounded by the comments from some people on this thread “ It’s only a fucking tree”.

Just wow.

BCCoach · 29/09/2023 13:33

@NowWhattt if they are convicted of course they will be sentenced. What makes you think they would get a discharge? A community sentence, which I think is what you mean by "cushy rehabilitation programme" is still a sentence.

Kissmas · 29/09/2023 13:33

@NowWhattt thank fuck our justice system isn't run by you

Have a word with yourself

Kissmas · 29/09/2023 13:34

Imagine not wanting the opportunity for rehabilitation for our wayward, stupid, thoughtless youth. Bizarre

Haha!!

Yes of course I want them sentenced!!!! You think that I don’t.. ever heard of sarcasm

Let’s see shall we..

Jeez.

Kissmas · 29/09/2023 13:48

What? I think you need to go and brush up on what constitutes a sentence in this country.

🤪

spitefulandbadgrammar · 29/09/2023 14:04

I want to know more about scuba diving in the Med and cushy rehabilitation programmes. I can’t bring myself to cut down a beautiful tree to go on one of these jollies, but maybe a shrub?

Avatartar · 29/09/2023 14:06

Do you think the reason could be connected to Kevin Costner (Robin Hood) and the microphone debacle reported in some news feeds the other day at an award ceremony? I have no bias either way with MM or H and would hate life in the media. Wondering motive wise if that could be it ( misguided if it was) as apart from a dare or a tourism/parking gripe I can’t think why

I’m so confused as to why people are upset about a tree?

Are you sure its your neighbours who are the wankers?

Are you seriously trying to link this to Harry and Meghan? You think a crazed Meghan Markle supporter might have chopped the tree down to get back at Kevin Costner?

And you claim that you "have no bias either way"? Sure.

Kissmas · 29/09/2023 14:27

Just when you thought scuba diving asbo kids was a bit wild, Costner haters turn up with their merry men.

Too merry actually, you're all on the fucking sauce 🤪

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 29/09/2023 14:33

That's such a lovely post @ValerieGoldberg and sums up exactly how I feel about the loss of this tree.

Agree, and also how I feel.

As a local, I've tried to pen a post earlier today, but couldn't quite word it correctly. All I know is I woke up this morning with a horrible feeling, then remembered that the tree had gone.

I'm proud to come from this region, and love it's rich heritage. I have some very deep connections with the local historic landmarks, including Sycamore gap.

Some folk on this thread won't or can't understand the importance and logistics of the area for whatever reasons.

ShipSpace · 29/09/2023 16:18

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 29/09/2023 07:49

Well I'm coming at it from the perspective that this 16 year old is from the area near Sycamore Gap. Therefore they will have grown up in an area where (a) using tools like chainsaws isn't unusual and (b) a 30 minute walk off the road isn't remote.

When my village was cut off by fallen trees after a storm last year, no-one waited for the council to sort it. (In fact, I don't think anyone even bothered to report it to the council/highways.) The farmers and postmen went out with chainsaws to chop the trees up and farm vehicles to clear the wood away. Road was clear by mid morning. If you live rurally, you don't see those skills as rare and unusual.

Do you live in Greendale?

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 29/09/2023 16:32

ShipSpace · 29/09/2023 16:18

Do you live in Greendale?

😂Almost!

The village posties tend to be among the first to try to get through the road after a stormy night, which is how they usually get involved. They put an appeal on the village FB group for assistance, and then others got involved. We have 2 posties that we all know by name locally - that's how small communities work.

Well it's exactly the same here in our area. Farming country. A tree fell in my field and it'll soon be gone

User1539721 · 29/09/2023 21:31

They might not even be local, 60 year old man could have driven miles, he doesn't need to arrive on a quad bike or tractor or walk

StowOnTheWold · 29/09/2023 21:44

As soon as I saw the stump pictures my immediate thought was this is no 16 year old. And I have trees that need felling from time to time.

Do you think a 16 year old who has been bought up in a farming community is capable of using a chainsaw to fell a tree?
