In the coming general election will you base your vote on …

State of the country, economic performance, moral rectitude of the government or lack of..
So if you are unhappy with the way the country has been governed, general conduct of the Conservatives, you’ll presumably not vote for them. They’ve had 13 years to improve things. 13 years to level up (Not just Johnson’s plan but Northern Powerhouse before that etc too) and very little has been achieved.
Or
Tradition, how you’ve always voted. Don’t trust the other side however bad your ‘team’ are. Even though your team may have been corrupt, deceptive, inept (Truss, Johnson) or wish washy, indecisive, uncharismatic (Corbyn, Starmer) you’ll still vote for the same party.
I’m interested in tribal politics. The next GE will be fascinating to see if the Red wall continues to crumble and the Home Counties drop their loyalty to the Conservatives….. What does it take to change your allegiance ?

Nobody, as it stands today. Which is tragic in a democracy and not a position I thought I would ever find myself in.

No party is offering to end Brexit which is a big priority for me, but I'd never not vote I don't think. Who does that help?

Cabeza · 29/09/2023 13:17

To answer the original question, tradition. But this is a massively more positive experience since having a really good MP.

I will vote tactically, and with the climate and nature crises uppermost in my mind because if we don't fix those then we're toast and the education system, NHS, even the idea of an 'economy' itself will be meaningless. In my safe Labour constituency (100% Labour councillors!) that means voting Green as it's the only way to register my concerns. My local Labour party seem asleep at the wheel on the environment.

NotReadyForAutumnYet · 29/09/2023 13:35

A big deal for me would be the ability to acknowledge some of the issues we now have, rather than staying silent.

Silence unnerves me - a bit like people with a partner that responds to any issues raised with a 'things are fine' / stonewall - how do you move forward? It's hard to move forward on things like Brexit or covid etc if issues and solutions/plans aren't acknowledged or discussed.

Unfortunately, the Green party runs our town and they're, frankly, bonkers. Their latest plan is to ban cars completely from the centre. What they can't understand is that, other than doing something like a 10/15 mile detour on a by-pass and motorway, people need to go through the town centre to get from one side to the other, i.e. live on one side, but the hospital is on the other side. When this is pointed out to them, they waffle on about public transport etc., but that's no consolation to someone like my OH who has to go to the hospital for cancer treatment infusions - as if people like him can just glibly hop on a bus, and change twice (of course, no direct buses), which take about 2 hours to do a trip that would be 20 minutes in a car.

That's on top of something like 30 pedestrian crossings and other traffic lights in a pretty small town, less than half a mile across the town centre. They love to say how wonderful it is that there are now few cars in the town centre, but are blind to the fact that there are huge queues on all the feeder roads into the city being held back by traffic lights, roadworks, traffic calming measures, etc., and that there are an ever reducing number of shops in the town centre because everyone's avoiding it like the plague and driving (further) to the out of town retail parks instead!

They'll only be pleased when no one goes to the town centre at all (except of course the drunks and druggies who "live" there). Of course, there'll be lovely clean air in the town centre, simply because it's a ghost town!

Like I say, they're completely bonkers!

I'm not privileged enough to be able to vote on a single issue.

I don't have the luxury of being able to vote on a principle that lets the Tories get in again.

We need the NHS.

We need someone competent to get a grip on the economy because we can't afford our new Tory mortgage payment combined with our stupidly high energy bills and food shop, car insurance, the price of kids shoes, and all the rest of it and now the water companies want to put that up too?!

So I'll vote for any candidate that can win in our constituency who isn't a Tory.

If we all do that we'll get the Tories out.

The country can't afford another five years of their corruption and incompetence.

The state of our economy really frightens me.

So you have faith in the Lib Dems?

Nope but until we have improvements in the voting system that's what I'll be doing.

LyndaLaHughes · 04/10/2023 19:34

Anyone considering voting Tory should watch "Partygate" and see if you still want to do so. Utterly despicable

GreyCarpet · 04/10/2023 21:35

I won't be voting Tory. But won't be voting for any party that has said they don't want women who don't believe TWAW to vote for them either.

So rhat leaves me pretty much politically homeless.

verdantverdure · 05/10/2023 01:20

Well at least people can't realistically say the Tories and Labour and the Lib Dems are all the same now.

One of these parties has lost its dignity and has embraced conspiracy theories and general batshittery. and it's embarrassing to watch.
