My other thought on the whole series is that it’s essentially a manual for identifying a worthwhile relationship! Strike is practically walking around with a big sign on his head saying “marry one who makes you feel like this!” (As long as you’re not actually one of the women he’s involved with!) While having an improbable insight into feminist issues.

I almost feel the opposite! Having read HP when I was younger I feel forwarned that we will not be spared on any sentimental grounds. I got a really strong sense of forboding in this one. I have a very nasty sense that she’s showing us just exactly how resilient Robin is, and how much of a touchstone Strike is to her, so that, having finally given us a slightly warm and fuzzy, Prisoner of Askanbany phase of happily ever after we won’t worry too much when the series ends with Robin the sole partner at the agency and a single mum!

Noooo, take it back! This just made all the hair on my arms rise.

I think symbolism demands a happy union, so I really hope you’re wrong, but you’re right that she would do it if she had to.. what an awful thought.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 29/09/2023 15:53

God lord, if she kills off Strike as well as Dumbledore I'm not sure I'll be able to forgive her!

I'd be very surprised if Strike and Robin end up having a baby and I really hope they don't.

He's been very clear all along that he doesn't want kids, and Robin is a bit more ambivalent about it because she assumed that was what her future would look like when she was with Matthew and applying for boring office jobs, but now she's doing what she always wanted to be doing and she is really fulfilled but it's not at all compatible with having a baby.

Having a baby would take her completely out of the running for going under cover anywhere, or even cancelling plans at the last minute to go after a suspect. And her lifestyle is just too dangerous. She's constantly coming close to being shot or stabbed or raped or kidnapped. Since having kids I'm more cautious about things like crossing the road or running for a train and much more careful when driving because I feel like one stupid mistake could leave two little children without a mother. My husband is ex military and trying to figure out what to do with his life and when I asked him if he'd considered training to be a firefighter he went pale and said that since becoming a father he just wouldn't be able to cope with something like pulling a dead child out of a mangled car. I think there's a reason why the kind of people who do dangerous or traumatic jobs quite often don't have kids.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 29/09/2023 15:56

I can't see a baby on the horizon either. I'd be quite disappointed if that's where either Strike or Robin ended up.

So would I. They can be great godparents to Ilsa & Nick’s son, plus there’s Strike’s link with Jack, & that’s enough.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 29/09/2023 16:01

And Robin's two new nieces or nephews who are on the way.

Runningoutofusernamestochange · 29/09/2023 16:06

Not sure, they are also struggling with becoming recognisably famous. If their agency really does become the best in London (if it isn’t already!) they could end up having to direct proceedings from behind a desk. (Strike on Mumsnet needs to be a comic relief/children in need sketch, but I’m now picturing Auntie Robin undercover at toddler group, too!)

Happy to start a petition for the inclusion of a Strike on Mumsnet chapter!

His first post can be "WIBU to tell my work partner that I am in love with her, just as she was heading out of the door with her boyfriend for a weekend away?". Then after a few pages, "not meaning to drip feed, but she has just come out of a cult. And this may not be relevant, but I did once crash into her wedding just as she said I do and I think she might have been about to run away with me during the reception".

I'd love this.

Maybe Strike tracks down someone connected with a case on Mumsnet but ends up down a rabbit hole on the Relationships board.

Or maybe he discovers something Robin has written about him.

MargotBamborough · 29/09/2023 16:15

Or maybe he starts saying, "Are you on glue?" or "She needs to give her head a wobble!" and Pat just smirks and says, "You've been spending too much time on Mumsnet."

Please JKR! Come on, we know you're reading. 😉

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 29/09/2023 16:41

"Shit hot lawyer" has already made it into one of the previous Strike books. I'm still waiting for Robin to tell a client to get her ducks in a row!

fruitstick · 29/09/2023 17:13

The next book involves Strike swapping pork pies for Pom Bears in the back of the land rover.

The day Strike tells Lucy to LTB, we’ll KNOW.

NynaeveSedaiOfTheYellowAjah · 29/09/2023 17:44

Wonderful! Wonderful.
i didn't like to be disloyal to JK but I found the ink black heart to be hard going - while knowing what she was doing with the online world it was hard to read. This was a tour de force! I was so scared for Robin. Her exploration of online grooming, radicalisation and now cults is just spot on. And the end...OMG!!!

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 29/09/2023 17:57

Do we think that at some point, someone has unwisely attempted to recruit JKR into Scientology and this is her rebuttal?

EmpressaurusOfCats · 29/09/2023 18:02

I’m pretty sure someone tried to recruit her into something where people are expected not to believe the evidence of their eyes or brain…

Runningoutofusernamestochange · 29/09/2023 18:10

oh, Lucy’s already on here, I’m sure. There’ll be a few threads about a complicated brother for him to find. All the hurt about how disinterested he is in the nephews, (except Jack!)

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 29/09/2023 18:11

Oh god yes, Lucy is definitely here. Waves

ArticSaviour · 29/09/2023 18:13

Just finished this afternoon. I loved it.

The section where Robin was undercover was really difficult - put me massively on edge and I had to start reading faster to get to her getting out because I needed to know.

Pat is a fucking legend. And Strike on Mumsnet would be immense. Lucy is definitely a Mumsnetter, and Ilsa probably is too.

Hated Bijou and that put me on edge too as I was convinced she would end up pregnant by Strike. And pleased to be shot of Charlotte.

Need to re-read now and also listen to the Audible. Please tell me Robert Glenister doesn't go full pantomime with Abigail's accent....

…Are we sure Bijou isn’t pregnant by Strike?

Prrambulate · 29/09/2023 20:18

Strike’s foray into Mumsnet and its cacophony of anger would leave him quaking with terror. Im sure it it,

Strike on Robin laughing on the phone to Murphy: “The man simply could not be that funny” haha

ISmellLikeRobin · 29/09/2023 20:28

Oh! I read the vegetable patch grave bit too fast & thought Will said he'd helped bury Jacob then dug him up again & reburied him. I missed the bit where he switched to talking about Kevin. I was a bit confused as to why Mazu was calling him a Deviate but I thought perhaps they used it for people with disabilities as well as those who left.

As much as I'd love Strike & Robin to fall into each others arms, I suspect she'll go away for an awkward weekend with Murphy &, by the time she gets back, she'll have convinced herself that it was just what Charlotte thought & Strike had been waiting for her to laugh & she'd made it awkward by just staring at him. Strike will think that she was horrified by the idea & clearly wants to be with Murphy because otherwise she wouldn't have gone away with him... and we'll be back to that professional distance phase again until something dramatic happens to make them get over the weirdness & be friends again.

…Are we sure Bijou isn’t pregnant by Strike?

Omg the horror.

Halfway through the next book he might get a call out of the blue from Bijou telling him that the QC insisted on a paternity test and discovered the baby isn't actually his.
