Dominic West is a good call. Not sure about Mazu - the eyes might be tricky to pull off. And I see Will Edensor as a sort of serious version of Hugh Skinner!

SurprisedWithAHorse · 16/10/2023 21:41

Mark Rylance would be a good Papa J.

SurprisedWithAHorse · 16/10/2023 21:46

She's probably not the right age, but I think Fiona Shaw would be a good Mazu.

Or Shirley Henderson.

I’d like to see Anne Hathaway have a go at the sinister Mazu (so not going to happen, and I know she’s best known for comedy, but I bet she could do the look!)

I'm sure she could act it, but I think she might be too beautiful.

Peter Wimsey said to Harriet Vane, ‘But I know that, if you have put anything in hand, disagreeableness and danger will not turn you back, and God forbid they should.’

I think that’s an excellent example for Strike.

I've just spent a happy ten minutes musing on whether Rowling's dark, unusually large, hairy, impoverished, disabled detective is written that way as deliberate contrast to Sayers' blond, slight, hairless, wealthy, improbably agile one.

And yes, Strike needs to take Peter Wimsey's attitude to Robin's risk taking and to an equal relationship (though doesn't Harriet think that he'd have to be 'not a man but a miracle'?)

EmpressaurusOfCats · 17/10/2023 06:36

Well, there was speculation that Wimsey was Sayers’ ideal man - I don’t think Rowling feels the same way about Strike! But it would be immensely unfair if Robin had to be less than she is because of Strike’s feelings.

Good shout.
Ruth Wilson for Mazu.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 17/10/2023 13:28

I wonder if Robins rapist - newly out of prison - will make an appearance in the last book. I'm going back to read the books I've so far only watched on tv and there's a lot in Career Of Evil about Robins abuser and how her evidence put him behind bars.

Ruth Wilson for Mazu.

Ooh, yes. She's a very good looking woman, but she could definitely be made up to look severe.

KillingMeDeftly · 17/10/2023 14:06

And she can definitely do creepy, see her character in Luther.

"Corrective Rape, it's a Bing thing."

Emma Watson for Noli Seymour do you think?Wink

User478 · 17/10/2023 14:08

-no, actually Jameela Jamil

She can't act, so no.

She doesn't need to be able to act if she's playing herself.

She always plays herself. And she's still terrible!

ThePlantKiller · 17/10/2023 15:14

Love Ruth Wilson! She would be a good Mazu, she played a baddie quite well in His Dark Materials.

Yes, but "smug, vapid actress who has been completely taken in by magical thinking" should be a role even she could manage to pull off.

Ha!

MrsJagoRoss · 17/10/2023 15:51

I can totally see Mark Rylance and Shirley Henderson in those roles. Emma Corrin (Diana in the Crown) for Noli, on the basis that she identifies as non-binary and promotes breast binders.

I haven't RTFT so sorry if this has been mentioned already but I am confused about one point, the Wace's wanted everyone to believe Daiyu was Jonathan's biological daughter but they also wanted the inheritance due to Daiyu as Alex Graves daughter?

Also just realised the bit about the pigeons never leaving the loft was a hint, I knew it couldn't be in there for no reason when I read it.

This annoyed me too.

GonetoGateshead · 17/10/2023 19:36

When I was reading I pictured Mazu as yoko Ono.

I actually love yoko Ono so nothing to do with personality 😂

Lancelottie · 17/10/2023 19:40

Jameela Jamil for Noli is actually exactly how I pictured the character.

SurprisedWithAHorse · 17/10/2023 19:42

But Mazu didn't have any South East Asian heritage, she just wanted people to think she did.
