Just finished - absolutely the best one so far. Loved it.

Switch will definitely be popping up in future in some form.

Charlottes death felt quite muted - I really liked the way the sister came across, but again there’s a lot of hanging menace with the kids being left only with their abusives father.

Pat and Dennis were MVP.

Keeping a back up phone in the brick might not have been a bad plan, Robin...

Runningoutofusernamestochange · 02/10/2023 20:13

Phone sounds great but she wouldn’t have been able to charge it. It already sounds like there was an implausible amount of stuff in that rock. Reminded me a bit of Hermione’s beaded bag. (Wonders if she’s ever considered a cross over?!)

At the end of the book, and before leaving, Strike tells Pat she can find him at the Flying Horse. I wonder if they're going to meet there at the start of book 8? Will they talk about him/Robin? Will she have advance intel that Murphy's planning to propose during the weekend away??

tribpot · 02/10/2023 20:38

I think we can be reasonably confident that even without Strike's revelation Robin would not be saying yes if Ryan proposed. Mind you, she said 'I love you' by mistake so who knows what she might do and later regret!

As always, I wish we'd got more time with the other investigators, they are always such good value. A proper op involving all of them at the same time would be fab.

BabyStopCryin · 02/10/2023 20:51

Apparently JKR is working on the next book already…

kalisimera · 02/10/2023 21:03

It was a tad implausible that there weren't dogs at the farm kennelled strategically to raise the alarm in case of nocturnal wanderings such as Robin's, but not a criticism really... it was an enthralling read. Am three-quarters of my way through the second reading!

Calmdown14 · 02/10/2023 21:07

My favourite line (other than the ending which was perfect) is the 'thesaurus for Christmas'. I thought that series of texts just summed up that the team are all of the same matter of fact nature but care about one another.

I did get close to guessing this one. I clocked the straw figures and Abigail stating 'never heard of it' when they were driving to Carrie but the full story was still quite a revelation..

Loved the development in Lucy and their relationship and the recognition that they are both processing their childhood in different ways.

Robin has really grown and the scene with Prudence showed that very well. Strike also matured and we saw his softer side and greater self awareness in quite a few different ways.

I also enjoyed the bits where we see where Strike is lacking professionally without Robin in terms of how he deals with Midge/Tasha. A look from Robin would have set that right! He might be a good detective but his business needs both Robin and now Pat.

Pat is a great character and the relationship between her a Strike is beautifully written.

Longlive · 02/10/2023 21:16

I so want Robin to come back in ( leaving Ryan to go away on his own) and Pat tell her where Strike is. Declaration has to be in the Pub they have always sorted there lives out in.

SekritStrike · 02/10/2023 21:20

Just finished. Excellent book. I found the reconnecting between Strike & Lucy so incredibly moving. Robin's storyline was tense and compelling.

BabyStopCryin · 02/10/2023 21:33

No Matt and Sarah?

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 02/10/2023 21:38

BabyStopCryin · 02/10/2023 21:33

No Matt and Sarah?

I'm glad about that. They don't deserve headspace in Robin's life.

I think we've seen both Robin and now Strike properly move on from their exes. Matthew and Robin had a genuine goodbye after they finalised their divorce, when she said she wouldn't forget how good he was to her after her rape. Strike has said a final farewell to Charlotte in the church scene and accepted her death.

Leaving them both free to move on to each other - eventually! I'm sure JKR will make us wait for the final book - possibly the final chapter - for that payoff.

I should hope so!! This was finished 9 months ago. They should be like back to back babies 😂

I thought she would get caught with flake crumbs down her tracksuit. I know I would!

Yes a flake seemed a really bad choice for clandestine chocolate eating! Impossible to eat cleanly.

TheFirstStraw · 02/10/2023 22:21

At just £6.79 a rock, you would think they could have stretched to include two or three so that Robin could indeed have had a decent meal once a week.

Is the Pat in New Tricks tonight?

what’s with her daughter? Did I miss something when she was a bit ‘off’ when strike asked if she was on Facebook?

Lancelottie · 02/10/2023 22:54

Strike asked how old her daughter was (in order to gauge whether she'd know which forums a 30-ish mother might use). Pat didn't want to say that her daughter was around 50.

BabyStopCryin · 02/10/2023 22:57

Ahhhhh. Because she had her when she was a teen.

Lancelottie · 02/10/2023 23:08

Well, I was more thinking that she'd told Strike she (Pat) was 57 - not sure he'd believe she'd been a 7-year-old mum!

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 02/10/2023 23:21

Yes the daughter thing was all related to her hiding her age. She was cagey because the new twat detective had threatened to reveal that she'd lied to Strike about her age when he hired her.

the80sweregreat · 03/10/2023 05:37

I'm glad that Matt and Sarah were excluded.
He doesn't deserve the head space for anyone !
I did think they might mention Rokeby though

A Snickers would have been a better choice. More energy in peanuts!

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 03/10/2023 07:18

I really enjoyed it. Couldn't put it down until I knew Robin was safely out. When she holds his hand and says 'I knew you'd be there' 🥰

Loved Pat's no nonsense approach to Will and her 'confession' to Strike.

I listen to the Strike and Ellacott podcast and I always think they are hard on Lucy. It was good to see her character grow and Strike make an effort to understand her better.

I had a lot of sympathy for Linda in the first few books but she seems to be throwing her relationship with Robin away now. She needs to work harder on accepting that Robin isn't her, a tricky lesson for all parents.

Who do we picture as Papa J? I've got a light haired Dominic West in my head.
